If Australia aren't coming to the World Cup he could get Serbia to the quarter-finals.

Lewis
02-08-2021, 09:36 PM
In ten games this season he has fifteen tries, sixteen try assists, and is averaging 219 metres per game. He also won the Wally Lewis Medal, and could well win the Dally M in fifteen games. Best hot streak since Jarryd Hayne RAPED the competition in 2009.

lol they were the pre-game stats. Three more tries and try assists from today. It's not even fair.

Lewis

'Truh-boyer-vich' seems to be the Australianised version of it. Did you watch Saints vs Hull? Lewis Dodd looks like another player.

Sure did. Even Joel Thompson turned up.

Not gonna lie, it’s good to see Swift doing well; always rated him.

I was worried about next season cos the wheels could fall off with the big changes, but I’m looking forward to Welsby taking over from Coote.

Queenslander

The NSW Horratahs and the ARU don't have the money for Turbo unfortunately. The best they can do is a random bloke who played both League and Union as a junior but hasn't made it yet in the NRL. The Western Force could afford to throw silly money at him but then he would have to move to Perth.

Rugby Australia are chasing 5 million off the Kiwis if the refuse to travel to Perth for a rescheduled Rugby Championship game. The player welfare card is rubbish as they are touring America for Test in October.

I reckon World Rugby should unite and shun the kiwis for a bit. Deprive them of home Test Matches for 10 years should do the trick.

They refuse to play at Twickenham because they want half the gate, they charged Fiji $250 000 for the privilege of hosting the Maori All Blacks, they didn't tell South Africa that they were pulling out of Super Rugby, they tried to negotiate with the Reds and the Waratahs about joining Kiwi Super Rugby without informing the ARU...

Edit: They denied Tonga's request to play the Maori's instead of the All Blacks because they could only field a team of amateurs.

And that is just the last 2 years.

Not all of the All Blacks have been vaccinated.

The NZRU an is absolute disgrace atm.

As late as Thursday last week, players were urgently seeking Covid-19 vaccinations to comply with travel requirements. Some could not get their second shot until 6.30pm on Friday night, but were still apparently willing to travel once cleared. Multiple players have responded to questions regarding the week leading up to NZ Rugby’s decision. One has confirmed that NZRPA’s boss Rob Nichol addressed the team and some of the players’ partners after Sunday’s second test victory at Eden Park. Nichol told them that they had to be prepared to travel to Perth and that they could be away from family until December. One player told The Spinoff they “were bloody disappointed” when informed of the cancellation on Friday, another said “it made sense” to stay in New Zealand.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/sports/23-08-2021/everybody-hates-nz-rugby/

That foundation was shown to be built upon sand when NZ Rugby tried to take unilateral control over the future of Super Rugby last year. They will frame that as acting decisively in a bid to redefine and reinject value into the Southern Hemisphere club landscape, but what it achieved was an atmosphere of mistrust that has led to angst and something close to enmity over the past week.

I'm not sure what the point of 'expansion' into a suburb of Brisbane is. The Sunshine Coast Falcons seem to produce half the league as it is, so they could jump up with relative ease. The Rockhampton Rapists(?) might be worth a go as well if they insist on another Thursday night game.

Queenslander
28-08-2021, 12:42 PM
Rocky Rapists

The East's bid is bullshit and the only card they hold is being South of the river. They are my least favourite bid. Ipswich/ Western Corridor is interesting because they claim towoomba and the Darling Downs, Some of Logan and the back of the Gold coast. The population is set to boom there in the next 10 years. They could easily run a 20 K stadium in Ipswich .

I'm pretty sure the Dolphins have said they will align with the rocky rapists/Central Capras if they are successful. Munster is from Rocky lol

Bellamy has signed the other Nikorima as a replacement for Hynes. I expect big things next year from him with 1 Bellache pre season under his belt.

6. Jayden Nikorima - Redcliffe Dolphins (C)
What a game for the experienced campaigner. Nikorima scored a hat-trick during his side's huge 52-12 win over Brisbane Tigers. He also kicked six from 10 conversion attempts, taking his points tally to 24. Nikorima also clocked 103 run metres, made two line breaks, one line break assist, one try assist, five tackle breaks and made 16 tackles with a 94.1 per cent tackle efficiency.

Is it still possible to be actually sent off? Say if you go full Hopoate/Ben Flower early doors? If not seems a bit strange that the sanction for beating someone to death would be the same as for getting your shoulder in slightly the wrong position when trying to make a tackle.

Feels like a DIG UP! situation that's been created by the massive expansion of red card issuing.

What did you make of Jordie's red?

Clear red. He didn't mean to kick him in the face, and I haven't read the laws, but I assume there's nowhere that says its OK if you only accidentally did it. So a dangerous action as bad as that simply must be red.

NRL 2021: Reece Walsh arrested on Gold Coast
WATCH: Police say they are investigating whether the NRL’s likely rookie of the year, Reece Walsh, was involved in “drug and public order offences” after he was arrested on the Gold Coast.

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/nrl/nrl-2021-warriors-queensland-star-reece-walsh-arrest/news-story/2be64d66c6c1f04bf9fb487f88031d9f?amp&nk=2b42e36367ef097d045469742f1cec3d-1632631720

The NRL is facing a grand final week disaster, with likely rookie of the year Reece Walsh arrested over an alleged incident in Surfers Paradise.

The NRL’s grand-final build up in Queensland has been marred by revelations one of the code’s rising stars, Maroons Origin star Reece Walsh, has been arrested.

Walsh was arrested by Queensland Police on Saturday night over an alleged incident at a Surfers Paradise nightclub.

Vision of his arrest overnight was captured by onlookers and made its way on to social media.

The Warriors have informed the NRL integrity unit of the matter.

Walsh burst onto the scene this season and was selected in Queensland’s Origin team in June, only to withdraw the day before Game Two after injuring his hamstring at training.

Walsh is in line to win the Dally M rookie of the year on Monday night after a brilliant season with the Warriors after joining the club from Brisbane.

The 19-year-old was crowned RLPA rookie of the year last weekend.

In a statement, a Queensland Police spokesperson said an individual had allegedly failed to comply with a “move in direction”.

“About 12.15am this morning police from Surfers Paradise ordered a move on direction to a 19-year-old male,” the spokesperson said.

“About 45 minutes later officers observed that male in the same area.

“As a result he was arrested and taken to Surfers Paradise Police Station.”

Fronting the media with a gun to his head.

Your Leagues clubs don't have 1000's of pokie machines rinsing the locals?

Lewis
30-09-2021, 10:41 PM
None of that. Attendances have been a bit on the low side as well since crowds came back, which is worrying because 1) league crowds are basically the same people year in year out, so if some of them have just got out of the habit of going clubs might not be able to replace them; and 2) clubs would soon struggle if a twenty per cent crowd drop persisted over a few seasons.

Queenslander
30-09-2021, 11:02 PM
That sucks. Be nice if the NRL could form some sort of partnership with the Super League like supporting the World Cup.

It says it all about the NRL where they have or should have a massive war chest to spend on the game for the better but no they struggle to give a shit about League outside of Sydney.

World Rugby is supporting Rugby Australia financially atm. The NRL would probably rather piss away money on a Perth team that would crash and burn within a season than help the only other professional League in the sport.

Lewis
30-09-2021, 11:11 PM
It's basically stuck in a sort of purgatory. Nothing can be reformed for the long-term because the lower half of the clubs are just concerned with surviving, and the other half are concerned with not ending up like the lower half. They need some sort of private equity investment to put structural reforms in place and cover the losses whilst they bed in (i.e. a better structure with less games), but where do you get that, and lol at the divs who run the sport going for it anyway.

Queenslander - do you watch more league or union? (or AFL???).

Rugby Union is my priority if all 3 are on at the same time eg I completely forgot that the AFL Grand Final was on Saturday night. I just checked and Perth is 4338 km away they might as well have played it on the moon.

The NRL was a distant 3rd for a long time as I couldnt be bothered watching wife beaters on the telly but that has changed since the Broncos have cleaned house, for now.

Im a proper band wagon AFL fan Ill only watch the Lions when they are good and I barely watch neutral games outside of the big ANZAC day games or if I can sense a game will be full of dog shots. The AFL playing out of Queensland last year was the most AFL I had seen since the Lions threepeat.

Union is barely on free TV. I did pay to watch the Lions series, the 6 Nations and all the All Backs games and I have still watched more League this year. The European Tour may tip it in favour of Union by the end of the year.

Edit: Union (Wobblies 2 World Cup wins) and League (Broncos 4 Grand final wins) both peaking in the 90's is the cruel irony I deserve.

Penrith should really be winning another one now, if not two or three more. South Sydney are going to need a couple of years, Manly aren't there yet, Melbourne are losing some big names. The Roosters will be back next year, but they have retired some good players. I wonder if they knew what they knew now they would have kept Matt Burton and tried to move Jarome Luai on instead.

More chance of them getting multiple professional League clubs into the Super League than it would to get Perth to produce a single local in 50 years.

Toulouse got promoted to the Super League in quality circumstances. During the first covid season the leagues brought in a points per game system so that teams whose games were cancelled could still qualify for the play-offs if they were good enough. This season Toulouse won all of their games, but they only played two thirds as many games as everybody else, so they 'won' the league (https://www.skysports.com/rugbyleague/competitions/championship/tables) with ten points less than second place Featherstone who they beat in the final to get promoted. Toulouse were the best team, but it must help playing a third less games and doing a lot less travel over the season.

Super League should get rid of relegation now that there are two French teams. The first derby will be banging.

Blokes running the Dolphins are off to a flyer.

The Dolphins have become embroiled in a naming scandal after local leaders threatened to pull millions in funding and slammed the NRL expansion club over the snubbing of Moreton Bay.

News Corp can reveal Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery called a crisis meeting with Dolphins chiefs and accused the team of having an attitude that “stinks” after the club was named simply “The Dolphins”.

Queensland legend Petero Civoniceva and influential federal minister Peter Dutton are among a chorus of voices demanding Brisbane’s second NRL club be named the Moreton Bay Dolphins.

The Dolphins were last week awarded the NRL’s 17th licence after beating the Brisbane Jets and Firehawks bids and will enter the competition from 2023.

But in the space of a week the Dolphins have sensationally found an enemy in the council ally that provided $10 million in funding for their successful bid.

They are expected to unveil Wayne Bennett as their foundation coach on Thursday, but the landmark announcement threatens to be overshadowed by explosive demands from influential figures who claim they have been misled.

In an attempt to avoid alienating potential fans across south east Queensland and in conjunction with the NRL, the Dolphins have dropped the Redcliffe attachment from their name.

But that hasn’t gone down well with influential figures in the region, who claim they backed the bid after being told the franchise would be named the Moreton Bay Dolphins.

Flannery met with Dolphins chairman Bob Jones and group CEO Tony Murphy on Tuesday night to demand Moreton Bay be included in the team’s name.

“NRL fans have a built-in bulls**t radar and this stinks, so whoever’s pushing this needs to take a step back and remember the region they represent,” Flannery said.

“The Dolphins have been a local institution for 74 years, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to turn them into a national icon and it’s a chance we can’t afford to miss.

“Our region has the same population as Penrith and Parramatta combined and every other team in the league is associated with a specific location.

“I accept that the title Redcliffe Dolphins will be retained for the QRL, but dropping Moreton Bay from the NRL title is just a rude slap in the face to locals.

“The Moreton Bay community has rallied around The Redcliffe Dolphins’ Bid, now it’s time for them to repay that loyalty.

Cast your vote “The entire reason Moreton Daily stadium has the seating capacity, lighting, and broadcast capabilities to be an NRL venue is because of Federal, State and Council investment.

“I’ve spoken with Bob and Tony and I think they’ve been on the receiving end of some very bad advice. It’s time to start playing like one of the big boys, not just on the field but also in the boardroom.

“The Dolphins would be the only team in the NRL that wasn’t attached to a specific city or region, which is insane.

“The Dolphins can help put Moreton Bay on the national map, I implore them to do that.”

Civoniceva, a 33-game Origin legend who grew up in the region, said the team had to have a name.

“Moreton Bay Dolphins is a no-brainer for me,” he said.

“The Dolphins supporters are as passionate as any fanbase in the game that I’ve experienced. In saying that, I do think we need wider appeal of the entire region, not just Redcliffe itself. This is so everyone gets on board to support the team.

“When the players run out onto Suncorp or Moreton Daily Stadium you want them to have a sense of pride in their jersey, in the people and region they represent.

“Footy’s built around that tribalism and if we want to be a team whose passion rivals that of anyone else in the competition then we need to have a sense of place and belonging.”

Dolphins bid chief Terry Reader attempted to put out the fire and said he was unaware of any tension with the local council.

“We have a great relationship with council,” Reader said.

“Bob Jones and Tony Murphy met with the mayor yesterday. We’ve always had a wonderful relationship and will continue to.

“We’re immensely proud our team is based in Moreton Bay and will play some games at Moreton Daily Stadium.

“We’ll get to showcase that to our fans.”

Moreton Bay councillor Darren Grimwade said the Dolphins’ naming choice would hurt the region.

“I agree with the Mayor, the Dolphins’ attitude stinks right now,” he said.

“I suspect there’s someone new at the club pushing this ‘break of ranks’ approach and they should give themselves an uppercut.

“I represent some of the furthest communities from Redcliffe, but they understand the benefit of a Moreton Bay team putting our region on the national map and the opportunities that will come with that.

“Dropping Moreton Bay from the team’s name isn’t just a slap in the face to the governments and community that have supported the Dolphins, it’s damaging to business and our brand.

“Wake up, boys!”

Dutton, the member for Dickson and Minister for Defence, said the region would miss out on tourism opportunities by not having a location attached to the name.

“Council projects a $75 million boost to local communities and businesses if we are called the Moreton Bay Dolphins. That would be an excellent outcome,” he said.

“Manly, Penrith and the Gold Coast are examples of communities put on the map by their footy clubs.

“The Dolphins are in the NRL because they are a grassroots club who have given back and because they have great community support.”

How about taking a game to Perth first you carnies.

For the paywall afflicted:

Manly and South Sydney are keen to revisit plans to face each other in an NRL premiership match in the US as early as 2023.

The concept, originally dubbed “round zero”, to stage the first NRL clash outside of Australia or New Zealand was well advanced until COVID-19 scuppered the project. However, with international travel set to resume for the vaccinated, the clubs have expressed renewed interest in facing off in a potentially lucrative new market.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys has already revealed an intention to cash in on the explosion in legalised sports betting in the US, hoping the code can grab a piece of the $500 billion-plus that was previously wagered on the black market.

The Sea Eagles and Rabbitohs believe the best way to showcase the sport in America is to take a competition game there and the proposal has the backing of head office. The clubs are in a unique promotional position given Souths fan Russell Crowe and Manly counterpart Hugh Jackman would likely lend their heavyweight support.

Many chairman and co-owner Scott Penn, who has an understanding of the American sporting market from the time he spends in the country, believes the bold foray would be a successful one.

“No question, it makes total sense,” Penn said. “That’s the opportunity, to showcase the NRL and the spectacle of the game. I think there’s big potential.

“A couple of the NFL teams just played in London. To expand the game, we’d love to play. I’d love to encourage Hugh Jackman to support us and have Russell Crowe there to help make a spectacle of it.

“I’ve spoken to Peter and Andrew [Abdo, NRL chief executive] about it previously. Obviously COVID threw a big spanner into the works.

“We were always talking about how Manly-Souths would be an absolute cracker of a game. Having some heavyweight Hollywood talent on each side showing interest would be helpful.

“We are definitely interested. I see no reason why 2023 can’t be a possibility.”

South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly said the grand finalists were also keen on the concept.

“Clearly the pandemic put an end to the previous discussions about a game in the US,” Solly said.

“However, if the ARLC and International Rugby League are serious about using an NRL premiership game as the starting point for a long-term strategy to grow the sport in the US from 2023, we would be keen to be part of it.”

Rugby league’s last major foray into the American market was the ill-fated Denver Test match between New Zealand and England. The promoter failed to meet his obligations after suffering a financial loss, but that hasn’t dissuaded the NRL from wanting to take a premiership game there as soon as 2023.

“It’s definitely 100 per cent in the mix because of the potential of revenue coming from sports betting from the United States,” V’landys said.

“Because of COVID, 2022 is out of the picture, but 2023, absolutely. We take Russell for granted here, but he’s a superstar in America and so is Hugh Jackman. They are two high-profile people that the Americans would lap up with a game over there.

“They are ready-made promotions for the tribal rivalry [our game brings].”

Penn, who has already broached the potential American foray with major sponsor PointsBet, said the NRL’s decision to explore the lucrative gambling market was a prudent one.

“It’s massive, it’s a huge opportunity,” Penn said. “Once again, it comes down to content. A lot of the big sports betting agencies are looking for content and the NRL has such a fantastic product that hasn’t had a lot of exposure in the US.

“It plays well for anyone I’ve watched it with in the US, they all say ‘Wow, that’s amazing, how do they do that without pads?’

“It’s a phenomenal product, it’s fast, it’s entertaining and there is a result from each game.

“The unpredictable nature of the game, that’s what it is all about. That’s what sports bookies seem to like, having pretty even teams so that anyone can win on their day.

“There have been a few blowouts, but that’s because it’s a momentum game. But anyone can still win on their day and that’s very appealing to sports betting agencies. I think it has huge potential in the US.”

Kevvie has given up a fixed contract for unlimited football department resources.

The obvious joke is that the expanded football department will include Wayne Bennett's cocaine dealer.

Kevin Walters has backed himself to revive Brisbane as a premiership force after agreeing to a landmark new contract that gives the Broncos the power to sack him without facing a major financial hit.

News Corp can reveal Walters will be placed on a standard employment contract based strictly on performance - including lucrative incentives for on-field success. As part of the deal, the club has given Walters the licence to go shopping and bolster his football department.

While NRL coaches have traditionally signed deals ranging from two to five years, Walters is happy to waive a fixed contract period and will be judged solely on his week-to-week performance at the Broncos.

“I’m not expecting any favours from anyone here,” Walters said ahead of Brisbane’s official return to pre-season on Monday.

His original two-year contract, brokered in September 2020, will be rescinded. Instead, Walters will sign a revised open-ended employment contract, with no fixed term, that will see him assessed like any other office employee at the Broncos.

The restructured deal will include performance bonuses for Walters should he steer the Broncos to the finals, the top four or the club’s first premiership in 15 years.

But there is no five-year buffer enjoyed by his predecessor Anthony Seibold, who subsequently received a $1.5 million payout after parting ways with the Broncos just two seasons into his $3m-plus deal.

Walters’ management has been in negotiations with Broncos bosses in recent weeks to modify his employment terms.

Under the terms of the new employment contract, the Broncos must give Walters a period of notice, believed to be at least three months, should they wish to terminate the Brisbane legend.

There is a view the traditional coaching contract is heavily weighted against NRL clubs, who are regularly subjected to multimillion-dollar termination payouts.

The Broncos are also eager to avoid incessant media speculation over the future of Walters, who was originally off-contract during the 2022 premiership.

The Broncos coach is confident he can deliver and says his best form of security is to win consistently in his quest to deliver Brisbane’s first premiership since 2006.

“I have to perform,” Walters said.

“Every club has to get results and we’re no different.

“I’ve said for a while I want to be here long term and I intend to do that. But I’m not a fool either. I’m not kidding myself. It’s about getting results and I need to get results to stay in the role which is pretty clear.

“I want to be here for longer. We’ve had some player movement which hasn’t provided stability and what the Broncos need is stability across the playing group and the coaching staff.

“I never saw myself as a short-term appointment. I want to be here for a while, but to do that everybody at the Broncos has to perform and I’m no different.”

The deal is not all skewed towards the Broncos. Currently on a salary of $400,000, Walters will earn major bonuses if he meets Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as making the playoffs.

The Broncos have also told Walters he has unlimited resources to hire as many staff as he needs to ensure Brisbane hit back as a regular finals and premiership contender after finishing last and third last in the past two seasons.

Walters’ agent Chris Orr confirmed the proposed new arrangement which could change the way NRL clubs broker future coaching contracts.

“The Broncos want Kevvie to be their long-term successful coach,” he said.

“The Broncos are looking to throw all their support around Kevvie by increasing resources, whilst taking away any contractual questions by entering an employment agreement.

“This means Kevvie will be rewarded on results whilst also increasing stability across the club.”

The Broncos have overhauled their entire contracting mentality over the past 12 months.

Under previous management, a stable of Broncos stars had deals beefed-up by player options and Brisbane’s new regime, led by CEO Dave Donaghy and chairman Karl Morris, have moved to abolish potentially expensive player-option clauses.

Donaghy and Broncos head of football Ben Ikin are on standard contracts with no fixed term of employment.

Walters enters his second season of NRL coaching in 2022 and the reality is he faces the sack if the Broncos miss the finals for a third consecutive season.

But Brisbane’s strong recruitment drive, which has netted premiership duo Adam Reynolds and Kurt Capewell, has given Donaghy confidence Walters will steer the Broncos back into finals contention.

“We’re in discussions with Kevin, so I’d prefer not to (comment) for now,” Donaghy said.

“Look, Kev’s our coach. He’s our guy and he’s determined to succeed.

“There’s been quite a bit of change here in recent times, but we feel that with a number of things falling into place, the opportunity exists to build on where we currently are.

“We’ve prioritised investment in our football program and supporting our coach, staff and players.

“The growth I’ve seen in Kev as a coach and in the program led by Ben Ikin (head of football) has been tremendous.

“The pre-season starts Monday and we believe the group led by Kev will continue to grow on the gains we saw at the back end of last season.

“It’s for them to do, but I’ve got the confidence and belief in them that they will.”

“There’s real value in stability and continuity. I’ve been really impressed with Kevvie in the last three to four months. He’s certainly grown.”
