Not that I believe the conspiracy for a moment, but surely there's more people watching in the UK than the entire population of Tonga?
Lewis
28-11-2017, 08:15 PM
Yes, but the BBC pay about fifty pence for what little rugby league they show, where as the coverage in Australia will be on those BILLION DOLLAR DEAL terms, so following the broadcasting monies would lead you to conclude that having more of Australia watching makes more financial sense than increasing English viewing (especially since we will watch it anyway, which the SEETHING island bros might not).

As if the Australians care about the "World Cup". If it's not origin or Nrl they couldn't care less. Which makes NZ losses to Aus hurt that much more.

Australia vs Tonga would get more of them interested than watching them beat us again.

There would have been plenty of Australians cheering on Tonga in the final.
Lewis
28-11-2017, 11:26 PM
They need to be having some sort of whip round to keep Jason Taumalolo in Tonga colours (drop 'Jason' for added effect). Then again, he doesn't really need the money, so maybe they would be better off covering some of what Andrew Fifita will lose not playing State of Origin.

I still don't get positions in League. They don't hook, they aren't shaped like a hooker, why are they hooker?
And how are you a scrum half without scrums?
Jimmy Floyd
24-01-2018, 10:52 PM
I've managed to get it down to the pretty boy fancy dan wears 7, the big heffalumping oaf wears 8, and the 9 is the sort of tactical leader.
Other than that the positions all look completely interchangeable to me.
Lewis
24-01-2018, 11:05 PM
The hooker distributes the ball from the play-the-ball, and was expected to challenge for the ball when scrums were still contested. For better or worse, it is probably the most important position at the moment, and a good one will also make more tackles in a match than his union counterpart will in a year. The scrum-half is the half who puts the ball into the scrum and receives it out the back (once where it was won, and now where they just chuck it through; but either way executed in less than ten minutes and not decisive in any given result). He then gives it to the stand-off half, who stands off the scrum in order to start the attack. In Australia those positions are known as 'half-back' and 'five-eighth' respectively as part of their quest to convince themselves that they invented the sport.
Hooker and scrum-half are the most specialised positions in that you can't win anything with crap ones, but if you start putting people out of position they tend to be exposed at one end or the other.

Positional specialisation is a sneakily important part of compelling team sports.
I was slightly worried when ODI cricket seemed to be heading down the path of ten bits and pieces players + keeper who can bat first, for basically that reason.
Queenslander
25-01-2018, 03:27 AM
Bits and pieces players is hurting the Wobblies with all the notters in the backrow and utilities across the backline.

The major concerns for Scotland are in the front row injuries whilst I also worry about Toony’s selection elsewhere (but he’s been proving me wrong for years with Glasgow in fairness).
Still, Gordy Reid and Jon Welsh, whilst 5th choice in each position respectively, are competent scrummagers and held down LH and TH at Glasgow for numerous seasons and are now starting Prem props so I may be over-worrying.
I’m somewhat amazed by Harris at 13 though. Rather than move Jones to 12 to cover Dunbar, I’d just have brought in Duncan Taylor. He’s played 12 plenty of times before for Sarries and is proven for them and Scotland. Harris, whilst talented, is not proven and I worry we’ve made Jones a target for the opposition ball carriers with His defence being somewhat suspect.

What people don't realise about Scotland is it's a nation which just loses - especially when they should win. They've been at it since the 12th century and it won't be changing any time soon. If they started winning they would lose their national essence.
The field doesn't matter - rugby, football, war, referendums, Bonnie Prince Charlie. It's always the same.

I think Wigan were the 'home' team, and it sounds like a great wheeze for the clubs.
The three-match tour is part of a tourism and destination partnership with the NSW government. Destination NSW and Destination Wollongong effectively bank-rolled the clubs’ attendance to entice an estimated 5,000 fans to come from the UK and interstate. That’s a lot of beds and beers and doner kebabs. It’s win-win at WIN. According to the club it’s the “biggest single commercial initiative in the history of the club”. It’s why “Sydney.com” will appear on Wigan’s jumpers for all of 2018.
Melbourne are going to murder Leeds mind.
How was that not grounded? Looked fairly clear on the replay.

I hope Melbourne don't retain it. You have to admire how clinical and organised they are, but they are the dullest team to ever play the sport (plus [Sir] Cameron Smith needs laying out before he retires). Unfortunately, the best bet for beating them is the Roosters. Parramatta look strong on paper, but they are Parramatta so will find a way to fuck it, and then everyone else is either not good enough or seems to have important holes in their side.
My definitely going to be wrong tip for the season is James Graham leading St. George into the top four. lol at Canterbury forcing him out to make way for Aaron Woods, who, if he wasn't a 'character' (tosser) and all chummy with the broadcasters, would be widely regarded as the most overrated forward in the game.
ItalAussie
17-02-2018, 02:42 AM
As much as I'd love to see St George in the final four, that's a ludicrous prediction. James Graham is perfectly adequate, but he's not that much of a difference-maker.
It's Melbourne/Sydney again, surely. Brisbane might make a run. Boring. Sydney are a better side, but Melbourne are a machine. Might change now that Cronk's moved.

Surely Brisbane is in with a chance?
The Reds are far more interesting this year with Brad Thorn involved. Bringing Jono Lance back to play a huge hitting number 10 is very interesting and the direction we need to go in.
Hearing about Craig Bellamy’s (lol) coaching “regime” yesterday makes me like Justin Holbrook even more, for not being a power-crazy weirdo.

Brisbane are weak out of dummy half. Andrew McCullough is a tackling machine, but the other big teams have much more dynamic attackers there. I'm surprised Wayne Bennett hasn't tapped up an English replacement on poverty wages to rotate him with. I forgot Cronulla actually. If Matt Moylan gets back into it they will be challenging, but if he is still being a tart then they will be rubbish.
James Graham is a winner (except in Grand Finals) who makes everyone around him better. The halves are great, the forwards are good, and Matt Dufty is a beast. They don't have much depth, but they won't lose [m]any to State of Origin either so they should be alright in the regular season. I think I tipped Canberra last season, so...
ItalAussie

Lewis
17-02-2018, 10:04 PM
They're down to one with Josh Hodgson missing most of the season. I think St. George are tied with South Sydney for the most English club, what with Tyson Frizell being Welsh and everything, so there is an obvious cross-Pennines supporter base.

Two thirds of the South Sydney English contingent is crap (and the rest of the team is stodge personified), so we'll see which Super League players get picked up mid-season for 2019 and re-assess finals predictions accordingly. Until then I'll go:
1. Roosters
2. Melbourne
3. Parramatta
4. St. George
5. North Queensland
6. Cronulla
7. Brisbane
8. Penrith
I'm set on the top three, but fourth to eighth is pretty interchangeable. I want to have the Warriors bottom, but when they sack Stephen Kearney the obvious choice would be to get Michael Maguire in to kick a few wasters about, and that might get them above whoever else is rubbish. That could be South Sydney actually.
Let's fucking have it then.

They won't. All anyone ever remembers about Six Nations is grand slams. They'll carry on living off the 1990 one until everyone is long dead.
So what's the score with that knock-on, then? Aside from how long it took to call was that the law being followed properly? Seems harsh to me but I dunno the ins and outs.

The knock on was alright (although it's ridiculous that the ball then travels 70 yards downfield for a Scottish scrum when if England had fucked the score it would have just been play on).
The contentious one was when Danny Care picked up an interception and Nigel decided about two years later there had been an infringement in the previous ruck, when replays showed that there hadn't.

I had a theory during the Barca Mate heyday about people getting carried away wanting to feel like they're part of something.
'That was really good.'
'WHAT WE'RE WITNESSING HERE...'
It works better with the current political bullshit. Giving up your weekends being a sad cunt suddenly becomes a lot more significant if you convince yourself that *whatever* is the worst thing since that other thing.
It's just the other end of the spectrum from nostalgia, isn't it? "Well, the thing I got excited about then was obviously better than the thing you're getting excited about now."
I'm sure we've discussed this in the wrasslin' thread about the Attitude Era.
Lewis

That line is presumably up to the courts, after which point the person ought to be free to resume their life. If he had done time you could just sign him out of prison like Russell Packer, but he avoided prison with this compensation agreement. In that case he either comes back after he pays it all off painting fences (never), or he comes back to pay it off (ten years?). I think his return should definitely be conditional upon him doing that, and the NRL could have set up some scheme to take x amount of his wages towards doing so, but both rugbies need to pull their heads out their arse with this stuff.
Queenslander

Rugby Union in Australia definitely doesnt have domestic violence issue.
I think the issue for me is Australia has an enormous domestic violence problem where 2 woman a week are murdered in this country. These blokes shouldnt be playing professional sports. NRL virtue signals about woman and domestic violence all the time (to draw money out of sponsors and female fans) and they kick players out for ever which is appropriate. Somehow Bennett has managed to slip one through because of his pull and expects us all to laud him. Not this time Wayne it wont go away you senile fuck.
There will be sponsor backlash for sure and the media will keep digging at Bennett which is what is needed.

What jobs should they be allowed (or reduced) to? Why do the 'tradies' have to put up with them?
I meant generally when everyone over-reacts to anyone doing something a bit stupid. Obviously this was more than that, but it is ultimately on a spectrum, and the tedious media and administrators tend to shit the bed. Mitchell Pearce didn't actually bum that dog, but he got fined $125000 and missed eight games. Grow up everyone, because when things like this come along nobody has any perspective left.

Sam Tomkins got $2000 for pissing up a wall on a night out. "Japan under-20s players play rugby from the age of 15 and they virtually train every single day, they don't study. If you ever meet a rugby player, you'll know they're a rugby player in Japan because they're not very well educated.
"Then they go to university for four years and they don't study, they just play rugby full time. You've got these under-20s players from a country of 126 million, who are basically full time professional from the age of 15, playing against a Welsh side who are amateurs.
