One day the US is going to win this, and there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

At least we get a proper team for this one as opposed to a second-tier one because the main one is too busy with the Glold Cup.

The US will probably get molested. Klinsmann is a terrible coach. The whole thing should still be fun, though; it would've been nice to go to a game but it doesn't look possible. The final should have been at the Rose Bowl as well, not in New Jersey.

Nah they merged it with the Gold cup this year so now they're going to do it every four years from now on.

Ive updated the original post with the complete squads now they have all been announcement. Not sure how fit suarez will be after a hamstring injury in the copa del rey final. He is due to travel with the uruguay squad on 1st june so we will see.

Im interested in seeing Gabriel Barbosa. Never seen him play, but ive heard his name for a long time. He should be showa. I dont want to see jonas anywhere near he starting eleven. Douglas cost has pulled out becuase of injury. Kaka takes his place.

Suarez was throwing a tantrum when all 3 of Uruguay's subs were used and he wasnt brought on. Turns out, he wasnt even selected as a substitute in the first place. I dont think he was aware of that. Uruguay are out after losing two straight games.

Uruguay being out so easily is an interesting surprise.

The US topped their group and will face Peru or Ecuador, while Colombia probably have Brazil in the next round. Losing to Costa Rica may prove very costly.

Is it just nostalgia speaking when I say that it seems like soccer teams just used to be better like 10-15 years ago? Have I been spoiled by the Champions League? I can't think of a single international team that would be likely to make it to the Round of 16 of the CL.

International football is probably lower quality than club football now, but I still find it far more entertaining. Give me an international tournament to watch as a neutral any time.

And yet I give far more of a shit about my club than I do my national team. But then I think I care more about my city than my country so I'm probably just getting tribalism wrong.

Jimmy Floyd

The attraction of international football is that you can't just buy better players with money, so the teams actually represent something real. Well, unless you're Qatar, anyway.

I was just thinking the other day that there are no proper good players nowadays. Obviously false, but I get the impression that you got tons (well, tens) of players with class before, which seems lacking today. No doubt that it is nothing but nostagia-infused talk but still, I can't think of a single player out there which I watch in awe.

I wonder if the organisation of teams is better, giving individuals a little less impact. I've also started wondering if opening the European Championships to more teams will hinder or help the continent in terms of quality. Obviously it brings Albania and such more exposure but I also wonder if Finals football brings with it a different mentality. Albania v Switzerland or Northern Ireland v Poland might've seen bigger scorelines if they were just qualifiers.

It also might be age. I think when I was in younger I was more in awe of things generally, I rewatched Star Wars recently and I was taken aback with how shit it seemed, whereas when I was younger I remember thinking it was the most awesome movie ever.

Defences are more organized, which leaves less room for the talented attackers to do their thing. So they seem less like a continuous threat in the same way that the great strikers used to be.

Also, the all-out striker is an endangered species.

Pepe

I was less thinking of strikers and more of 'creative midfielders.' You don't get any of those these days.

I think it's largely that people will always remember the great players and forget the mediocre players, so the past greats stick out more while the current ones are still surrounded by the vast majority of more mediocre players. In the past, say, five years we've had Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta, Xavi, Suarez, Pirlo, Buffon, Casillas, Ibra, Neymar, basically the whole German squad as a monolithic unit (Klose, Kroos, Muller, Schweinsteiger, these players will all be remembered), Drogba, Aguero... a lot of those will be remembered with the same or greater fondness that we remember people like van Nistlerooy with.

The same applies to teams as well, we remember the great teams but forget the shit ones. The same will happen with this tournament.

Colombia losing to Panama worked out fantastically for them, given Brazil losing the plot. They're on the opposite side of the draw to Argentina, who have to be considered the strongest team left in the competition. Chile are likely to be their biggest obstacle from making the final now.
