While Bake Off is in the format of a competition, it's not competitive. It's just so pure and nice.

But they're popular enough that the fault is likely with me, rather than the show.
I actually can't fathom why I do like them because on the face of it they're the sort of thing I should hate.

Which would make sense if it was the 90s and there were 100 meandering 7 footers taking up space on NBA rosters.

There's barely anyone even over 7 foot anymore so you'll have to excuse my confusion.

How would making the baskets taller make the players shorter?

He said making it 6 foot taller or something.

It would basically mean that nobody would be able to dunk so you'd need better skilled players who could make shots from distance.

At least that's what I got from the idea.

Blocking, rebounding, and the like would still be important though.

Why does everyone always want to change sports. You get foot games and you get bad games no matter what.

the NBA is in a period where more people take 3 pointers and long distance shots than ever before but you're telling me you'd like basketball more if they.......... did even more of that and there were even less dunks?

there are no big men that just get the ball in the paint and turn around and dunk on people anymore... it's all pick and roll to the basket and then maybe a dunk or two that way. or dunks from fast breaks sure.

But the NBA you're describing you'd like to watch is seemingly the exact NBA that we have now? I'm so confused.

    - Individual stats seem to be treated as far more important than whether the team wins, probably for the above reason, though I don't know whether the chicken or the egg came first. I found that initially hard to compute but once you get used it, it becomes kind of compelling in its own right.
    - It is the most American thing there is, in every respect, good and bad. The thing that strikes me most is that it kind of exists in its own unchanging world which MUST remain constant. Footballers from the 1920s-50s are so impossibly distant to us, but Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio are almost still living and breathing now because they were playing, give or take, exactly the same game and we have all the same stats about them as players are compiling today.
    - It is more like cricket than I first realised and than is first apparent, although cricket has evolved around romance and aesthetics, and baseball has evolved purely around stats. Baseball and cricket can and should both learn a massive amount from each other, but I'm not sure either of them really does.
Baseball is the season. Completely different sport without it. People primarily follow it through the newspaper standings / box scores and “plays of the day” on the nightly tv news. It may still even have a larger radio than tv audience. You are right about the stats but they just developed based on the narrative trends you see throughout a long season. It gives you so many different stories to follow throughout the year, like how long until hitters figure out Ohtani. I’ve never seen anyone so quite so many swinging strikes before.

Yeah, height would still matter to an extent, but not nearly as much as it does now.

Another option might be to make 3-point shots worth 4 points.

Everybody is still gigantic. You have one spot on the team allocated to normal people who are very good with the ball, and the other 4 spots split among people who made it to basketball because they were tall and who may or may not actually be good at basketball.

Basketball is also super limited in terms of variety since the court is so small and the people so big. It's cool because it flows like soccer, but it's far more repetitive.

Basketball is shit, it's just constant scoring.

The whole Lavar Ball thing made it interesting for about 30 seconds.

Basketball is great fun in thirty second highlights packages but I tried to actually watch a game and lasted a couple of minutes at most.

Now see those are legitimate gripes.

    1. I want points to mean more when I watch sport.
    2. The noises of the squeaky shoes annoy me.
    3. It just bores me when in reality only the last 5 minutes of the game really matter.

    Totally fair criticisms.

Yeah, I watched some BBL and it occurred to me a lot of it was looking at the score and realising a decent 10 second spell evens most of it up. I had an olive for the first time this week. Not too keen on them. They look like they should be juicy but they're LIES.

How delusional are you? The majority of players on a basketball squad aren’t particularly talented, they’re just 215 cm tall.

This is also somewhat of a problem in tennis, which I love. They need to lessen the influence of the serve there, imo. There’s too many ace trolls on the tour.

How do you reduce the power of the serve? Get rid of lets? Make the box smaller? Life ban for John Isner?

All great ideas chaps, glad we've got a queue of people willing to put their thoughts out there.

One I heard would be to just get rid of the second serve. It makes sense - why do you need 2 chances to hit that big box? - but it would be an enormous rule change and I don't even know how they'd go about getting that going.

They've tried making surfaces slower in the past for this very reason but the changes in play have been modest.

Make the net lower, but only have one serve. That would sort them out. You'd end up with loads of dynamic rallies and they'd all take even more drugs than they already do.

Would also reduce the length of the match by a lot, which sports authorities love to do these days because they all hate their own sports.

Nope, if there was one serve matches would be far longer since there wouldnt be nearly as many service winners as there would be with two serves.

You’ll be able to find downsides to any change, but you have to take the bad with the good there.

What even are "your" sports? Footy, fair enough, the world thanks you for your service.

Otherwise... what are we doing here? Rugby? Cricket? We already have better versions of those games, silly.
