I read about this one years ago and it's the one I tend to think of first:

    I love the specificity here...

Sa'ad Kahim, drove a Japanese-model car and parked...
A Japanese car... the absolute monsters.

The Glasgow one that got punched has to be the worst.

Best is likely to be the obvious.

'Japanese-model car' is a beautifully 90s phrase. Like that clip when Ugo Ehiogu says his favourite drink is 'bottled lager'.

I would love to say some masterful Google-fu was employed but I literally just searched "Ugo ehiogu bottled lager" and went from there.

The BBC reckon laddo wanted to go the hospital so that muddies the waters a bit. Hold off sticking the cabbie's medal in the post.

If the bomb wasn’t powerful enough to give the cabby in the front seat more than a few scratches, doesn’t it point to some dimwits with a half-cocked idea for jihad, as opposed to some well-funded cell with connections to the Middle East?

Probably also why it flew under the radar.

    Mark Bosnich was the one.

Ribena....? Ribena and a line of coke, more like.

It was refreshing to see how candid footballers used to be, none of the usual generic statements being said with zero emotion.

Yeah, Bozzie and McGrath are having us on. Taylor too, I think. Yorke sounds genuine, but I know what him and Bozzie were up to, so must just be a good blagger.

Thanks for sharing that. My first Villa team

Consensus from his Chelsea days is that Mark Bosnich is one of the worst human beings ever to be involved in football. Not sure if that applied at Villa.

Not sure when exactly Remembrance Day became a one-upmanship contest but it definitely is for some now. In Wigan there is some lunatic with a nazi skeleton, horse wrapped in barbed wire and a machine gun nest in their front garden.

In contrast, my great grandad was quite a prolific soldier by all accounts but just chucked all his war stuff in a biscuit tin and banished it to the back of the shed.

I don't think those who actually served were ever that keen to talk about it or celebrate it like it is today. Those after it seem to have become obsessed with the myth of the glamour of "being at war".

I wonder if they double down so hard because the alternative is admitting that our last worthwhile war ended 75 years ago and everything since has either been a waste of time (The Falklands) or Political tinkering to keep oil supply under control? Probably.

It's not about war, it's become the closest thing we have to a national day/independence day. Millions want that sort of outlet for expressing national pride, whether the Guardian likes it or not.

There is definitely a hard on for it all from the old lads who were too young for the big wars and now too old for any future war. The reality is the majority of people who went off to the glorified wars were mown down like dogs, died in horrible, preventable ways or survived knowing all their friends were dead. 100 poppies, please.

It only went mental during the past twenty years, largely to conflate 'supporting' (whatever that means) the armed forces with supporting their pointless deployments. It could well be dialled down now, especially if there are other outlets for it (flags on butter).

It was very much about war and the politicians pushing it to cover for their shitty Middle Eastern exploits and then got rolled into part of the culture war after they tried to use it to batter the BBC as a bunch of lefties who hated the troops.

Nothing to do with ‘national pride’.

I had to write an essay about this for a course I did at work but essentially the reason we are wank is due to short sightedness. When the electrified the Heathrow line in the 90s a lot of lessons were learned and skills developed that were then lost by not commissioning any other projects. By the time the next one was commissioned everyone involved in the last one had retired, so they had to start from scratch with the talent pool.

Compare that with a country like Germany where they constantly have a slate of projects going to ensure they retain a pool of talent that can work on whatever they need.

There is no understanding of the railway at a political level. They announced £500m to reopen closed stations and lines a while backed which was opened lolled at in my office, local councillors reckoning it would only cost £15m to reopen their line that has been shut for decades. It cost £7m to relay the coping stones at Wigan North Western so good luck with that, Grandad.

It's a joke at this point isn't it. The business case was weak at its starting price and non-existent at its current (and eventual) price. Then they moved the argument to capacity, but that doesn't necessitate high-speed rail, and they only plan to have a few trains running on it anyway, so you could just upgrade the other main lines or build new ones for a fraction of the cost. Local authorities were bounced into it because it was that or nothing, when every single one of them could spend the money better, and then you could just re-build the Great Central Main Line which follows much of the same route. I always felt part of it was an indirect way of pulling the Midlands into the London commuter orbit and preserving South East property prices, but now it's simply at the too many people would look stupid if it was canned stage (see: Afghanistan).

It's pretty much always been about that, no? Plus some grift to chuck their pals some extra money
