There is meant to be a convention that military people don't go around discussing how many people they've killed and how, but it normally goes out the window whenever one of them writes a book. I think the number sounds a bit precise and/or inflated, although I don't suppose he's doing it on purpose. I'm not sure what his point is though.

I think it was more of a macho coping mechanism they had instilled in him, by all accounts he winged the kid whilst returning fire and they couldn't get to him before he bled out because they were still engaged.
Even so, counting the kid as a half seems particularly fucked up.
