    Favourite "Types" of goals

I've realised that some of my favourite goals all the same style. They involve just raw power and strength displayed from a player and smashing in at the near post past the goalkeeper. It is so safyisfying.

A good chip like Wullie but I would add outside of the boot finishes and anything off the bar.

A few outside of the boot examples

    3:00 in on this one.

Powerful goals that go in off the bar and to a lesser extent, the post.

Also, I really dislike team goals that end in a tap in.

Yeah the passing was good but the finish kills it, I hate when people wank over those.

I always rate crossbar/post goals below goals that just hit the net. They always feel a little lucky

I think my favourites are goals where a piece of technique or the finishing itself looks so nonchalant (but still precise) you start to wonder if they even needed to focus to pull it off. Chips are often like this. But I feel like Bergkamp did this a lot, that little flick-and-turn and roll-it-in goal he scored against I wanna say Newcastle was a lot like that.

Contrary to Sincere I suppose, I look out for finesse rather than power.

I also like these random "I tricked everyone" moments. Quirky corner or free-kick varieties where the opposition are just left standing still wondering wtf happened.

Ooh, this gives me a chance to coo over my favourite type of goal, which is the predator's precision finish. This type of goal is going out of the game, Jeff, due to the advent of the defensive centre forward 'basketball backboard' and worse still, the 'false nine'.

Nevertheless, greats of my youth were wonderful advocates of this very particular type of goal, which is hard to describe and by no means includes all poacher's finishes. This type of goal must involve as few physical attributes as possible, and power is especially unwelcome. Using the toe or the outside of the boot or occasionally the instep, I want my goalscorer to caress the ball into a tiny available area of goal, often just inside the far post, and to do so from no more than twelve to eighteen yards out (depending on context). Ideally the forward has to be clean through with only the keeper to beat (there's often a failed offside trap involved), and then he has to fill a pleasing part of the net, like he's filling a ball-shaped hole in your soul.

Always extra bonus points if the ball just barely trickles over the line (but you lose points if the keeper touches it on the way in).

Inzaghi was the absolute doyen of this sort of goal, which was also done very nicely by Crespo, Morientes and, closer to home, Ian Wright.

    1. Crespo (please note: I am not interested in the pass)
    2. Inzaghi
    3. Inzaghi again
    4. Shevchenko
    5. Wright
    6. Morientes
    7. Claudio Lopez
    8. Inzaghi again

There are hundreds more out there and you still do see them today occasionally, but the era of high lines and precision poacher centre forwards is largely gone.

I could honestly watch goal 2 on repeat for the rest of my life, and not just because it was the winner against Liverpool. The speed and angle at which that goes in is fucking A1.

To me that pass is the best part of that goal. A defense splitting pass, especially from a distance preferably a volleyed pass.

I take it you loved the first three years of Owens career then. I feel like that’s all he did.

Yeah there were loads of good Owen ones but I couldn't be bothered to link to all of them.

If anyone ever needs a mental health boost, by the way, I do recommend a good Inzaghi goals compilation on Youtube. It's not just that he's a boss (particularly at deflecting in other people's efforts), but he celebrates every single one as if he's just cured cancer.

I love that the commentator doesn't go full mental until it nestles right into the corner, even though it's clear that it was a goal before then.

Doesn't have a broad application to other players but my word I loved Van Persies ability to take a ball over his shoulder and volley it in.

Also while I'm on player types of goals. Thierry Henry shaping up a defender on the goal line, pushing it past him, running out of play and back in to finish in the far corner was another but I can't think of specific games as he seemed to do it all the time.

Floyd missed out the undisputed greatest goal-hanging twat goal of all time, which is this (first) one. Why is he even wasting his time making that run?

That is the exact goal I thought of before I saw what you'd linked, Lewis. I read about it before I'd ever seen it and that is exactly the point, there's no reason to think he ought to go there and have a chance of touching the ball. I fucking love a shithouse finisher.

The Michael Owen goal against Portugal in 2004 is a good one in terms of natural finishing and is emphasised by the fact that we haven't had a player since who would score it. Other than perhaps Sir Daniel Welbeck.

I do get more and more of a hard on for chips as I get older purely because barely any fucker even tries them these days. Rooney had a decent one in him until he fully dedicated his life to actual chips and fucking whores.

I found this Glenn Murray goal from a few weeks ago to be extremely satisfying:

    https://youtu.be/xIwK28rRlGI

    40 seconds in or thereabouts.

Just the way he doesn't move at all.

He ruined it by trying the chip every single game until he left.

Ruud was the master of the poach. Incredible forward.

I love a good header - Bierhoff and McBride. And of course Fellaini.

I like the aesthetics of a good free kick, but they are miles overrated. Far more should be scored than there are. There should be two players in every squad (one left one right) training day and night to be able to up their % curling the ball into the last foot of space on each side of the goal.

The Newcastle goal will always be his greatest ever. I can't find it in HD on YouTube which is a crime.

Bitching at the ref one moment, turning around and belting one in seconds later. So good.

I was thinking the other day how nobody's copied Roberto Carlos' technique. I don't think he was great at them either so I don't know what the technique got him. Juninho (the Lyon one) seemed to get through his with raw power.

The thing with freekicks is I'm sure there's an inverse link between spectularity and efficacy, which is why Van Hooijdonk was such a hero at them.

I think I most like goals by teams or players I also like. Fowler's brace against United on Cantona's comeback game, those goals Recoba scored for Inter when he first appeared, probably most of the goals Batistuta scored that season Fiorentina nearly won Serie A. There's also obviously a bit of mid/late 90s nostalgia here as well.

I like a good diving header too. I cant head footballs in real life so it is the only type of I goal I have never scored. The Giroud header is extra special. The way he strongarms Maguire out the way. Builled him off the ball. Skip[ to 7:43 of the Arsenal video. How do you embed the video to start at specific time?

I do reckon this is about the case to be honest. It does always seem like players should score more, but I think you keep thinking that from your own experiences of how mobile goalkeepers are relative to the outfield players. The beauty of football as a sport is that relatively speaking the game seems much the same regardless of level, it's just the speed of everything that vastly increases at higher levels (because of this it's such a relatable sport to watch - everyone has scored a few scorchers in their time).

But, I think the gap between outfield and keepers is much bigger at lower levels, so basically the thing with free kicks at the top level is they need to be so fucking hard it does get difficult even for the best players.

    I reckon, anyway.

Definitely. The City goal is still up there, in spite of divs claiming he shinned it, but that Newcastle goal is freakish.

I see Robbie Keane has retired. I remember watching some Sky programme of his best goals in a shitty pub, and it struck me that for a reasonably consistent scorer he must have the best ratio of belters in his overall goals total. Any better offers?

This, this, and this: chips and volleys that come out of nowhere.

Edit: and every goal by Le Tissier.

The headed version of what I was rambling on about, presented to you in my two favourite headers ever, both coincidentally against Italy in World Cups:

    Borgetti
    Pele

I love Pele's, but Borgetti's is the best ever, and I'd forgotten how epic his celebration was as well.

That Borgetti goal is my favourite header ever. Just magnificent.

Watching this it's easy to forget a lot of the ones in a Blackburn shirt too, footage isn't exactly widespread-

Has reminded me of the ridiculousness of scoring from an indirect free kick from inside the box, 6 yards out with half the stadium in front of you.
