The reason we're doing it is because he normally dominates doing a roast beef, but makes a needlessly massive mess while doing it and is unable to realise this / clear up after himself as he goes. This drives my mother towards madness so we have staged an intervention. Obviously we can't do a roast as he will then just come in and tell us why we're doing it wrong, so we have to do something he doesn't know how to cook.
He has various other stupid Christmas traditions that remain intact, such as: buying a Christmas pudding purely to set it on fire (it doesn't get eaten), and seething when we won't all come and watch the monarch's speech with him. 'Fine, fine, I just thought you might be interested in what she has to say. Suit yourselves.'

I always watch a fucking long film from his childhood with him to keep his nostalgia quotient up (looks like being Zulu this year; usually it's 633 Squadron, A Bridge Too Far or The Heroes of Telemark) so I'm doing my bit, I'm not watching some bullshit about all faiths and none.

We're not going to mass in the morning which is weird, I'm guessing because of various peoples ill health. I have no interest in religion but it's a bit of a shame, it's a nice ritual.
