So the FT have added comparisons to their tool so I thought I'd do a couple between my two homes.

Couple of notes. Swiss started precautions about 10-14 days before the UK including shutting down the airports and borders. Swiss testing has been nearly 3x the UK per 1000 before the recent scale up. Swiss population is older but also wealthier. I did logarithmic because I'm not very smart and don't know whether that or linear is more useful, logarithmic just sounds smarter.

That's what we've been discussing today. I just don't know how they would manage it. We're a one form entry school (and I'm the Year Six teacher). I proposed that if all 30 of the class are in all day together, we could split them into two or three classes. Plus we already have two small classes for the key workers. Four or five classes for around 45 children could be manageable, but you'd need a fair number of both teaching staff and support for that (around ten). One office worker, one SLT, four teachers, at least a couple of support, dinner lady and lunch time supervisor.

Is the idea that the kids are supposed to keep the two meters distance within the school?

If fully grown adults can't manage it I don't see how kids will.

I can see how it might be easier in primary schools - don't kids basically stay with the same teacher all day anyway?

In secondary schools, I really can't see how it's possible, with teachers and kids constantly moving between classrooms.

Yeah at my secondary school, I doubt the corridors were even two metres wide.

In a class, as long as the numbers are low it’s fine. Keeping them apart at playtime is much harder, and the younger down the school you go the less they understand about staying apart, like we had reception and nursery children in last week who did zero social distancing and no amount of telling them or explaining helped. Same for the SEN children we’ve had, one greets everyone with a hug when she arrives.

Yeah. It's manageable to an extent in formal situations: lining up, sitting at desks etc. However anything less formal such as play times, PE, basically anything that requires them getting out of their seat, and it's out the window.

I can't see how it's manageable at all. Surely it'll be fucked as soon as they congregate in the playground to go in. And again as they make their way to their classrooms.

That can't really be the plan, surely.

Something probably does need to be done to stop overcrowding on public transport but this seems like a terrible idea.

Get the riff raff off public transport, now that's a proper Tory policy. I'd like to stop them having gardens too but baby steps.

Well, if more companies switch towards flexible hours, the idea of peak times will be somewhat changed. I've been thinking that the office as we know it is pretty much done. And the waiting room.

The BBC news just described Italy as "Europe's worst hit country". Is it any more? Is it not the UK now?

It is Italy. They have the same issues with under-counting deaths that we do.

In fact in relative terms the worst hit country is almost certainly Belgium.

This is another thing that came up. They are talking about alternate days in and out to space people out, which seems unnecessary but whatever, but also gradually easing people back in with five, six, seven hour days. What? We're not coming out of actual hospital.

We managed alright out of it. We went through stages with it:

    1. "Hey, if you're uncomfortable or at risk, stay at home."
    2. "We've set up a rota for a skeleton crew. One week in five."
    3. "We're allowing people to work from home."
    4. "There's enough people working from home so the remaining guys in the office can distance themselves."

It helps that we have a lot of people on different working patterns, flexi-time, etc. It also helps when you've got long-term sick and retirees as well. The office was already half-full when this hit.

This is what our pubs (the VFI) have put forward for them to be allowed open. Sounds like not worth the hassle over drinking at home with friends unless you really want draught.

    These are the measures the Bar Trade wish to discuss with government;

    Proposed measures:

-Bars will become dispense bars only with no sitting, standing, ordering, payment or drinking at the bar allowed.

-Table service will be a requirement with pubs only serving customers seated at tables.

-The numbers on the premises would be confined to no more than four per every 10 square metres.

-A maximum of 6 people would be permitted at any one table.

-Customers will be required to use hand sanitiser upon entry.

    -All customers must remain seated.

-Staff will be fully trained in the new procedures.

-They will also be asked to maintain a safe distance from customers when taking orders and to wash their hands thoroughly every 30 minutes.

-The utilisation of outdoor spaces to enhance social distancing.

-Procedures implemented to ensure safe use of toilet facilities, which may include limits on the numbers using toilets at any one time.

    -No live music or DJs.

-Gardaí / HSE will have the power to close any business who is flouting the public health guidelines.

Staggered play times, social distancing lining up and then wash your hands etc when you're back in class. That's basically how things are working now with the key worker children in.

I've no idea what the plan is.

Aye, they were going over something like this on the coronaviruscast or whatever it is called and it just struck me that what would be the point of 'going to a pub' if you weren't really allowed near anyone and very few other people were allowed in?

They won’t make a penny past week one then anyway. There’s such a difference between home drink price and pub drink price already but the atmosphere just made up for that. Widen the price difference and remove the atmosphere and it’s dead.

There was some Guardian report on polling showing people have given in to the fear and will be averse to going back to normal regardless of the rules. Be interesting to see the full economic car crash of that once the furloughing and reliefs stop but businesses struggle to bring in the punters

Health before the economy, thanks. I want to live in a safety bubble and eat air for the rest of my life. And my non-existent children will be going back to school when I think it's safe, and not a moment before, even if it means they are educationally stunted for life.

I wouldnt be super keen opening the borders to us if I were Kiwi. NSW and Victoria are still posting concerning numbers. Direct flights to South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland would be a good start with the state borders still closed.

Ah I’m only joking. You used to go through phases where every post on this read like the headline and first paragraph of a Daily Mail story. You’ve flattened the curve though.

For anyone wondering what life is like post-lockdown.... normality has resumed depressingly quickly.
Nothing has changed, people still drive like cunts, it's still hard getting up a 6:30 every morning, the traffic and pollution has returned. The high from the freedom, for me, lasted about 3 days.

I can be a bit hyperbolic admittedly, but I've been broadly right about this all along, with another example on this page:

And by time, I meant time for us to get almost fully out of lockdown and social distancing like Vietnam are.

Such a shame re: Vietnam. I see this as an opportunity to change the way we are (why do we want to live in air polluted cities ffs?)

It takes bold governmental moves though and most of them aren't imaginative enough.
