    Alcohol is bad for you

    Reports a new study.

I've been aware for some time now that I drink too much. It's not mega levels or anything but enough for me to notice the negative effects. It's a bit shit but I lack the motivation to make any real changes.

    Do you drink too much?

People who have cut down, how?

Didn't we know alcohol was bad for us in the 1980's? Maybe even 70's?

Was there anyone left under the impression it wasn't bad for you?

Anyway, I drink very seldom these days but when I do I make sure it's a lot. Wasn't a conscious effort but life always makes these things cut back as you get old. Some people probably say it's binge drinking, but I think a glass and a half of beer in one sitting counts as binge these days, so I won't worry.

Next week: Smoking may shorten your lifespan.

I used to drink way too much, 3-4 times a week I'd be steaming. These days it's usually 2-3 casual sessions and a heavier session on a Friday or Saturday.

I'm not really sure what motivated me to cut it down, was probably when I moved in with my missus and your lifestyle changes. If I was single again now I'd probably slip back into my old ways quite easily.

The quite excellent Christopher Snowden lolled at this earlier. In short, it's not a new study.

It was mostly an excuse for the thread. Can generally tell from how I feel the night after poisoning myself that it probably isn't doing me much good.

Living with my girlfriend is probably half the issue. Too easy to just have a few every night.

I had took an awful notion for drinking a lot at home under the guise of trying loads of stouts, but once I tried them all I just left it at only drinking when I'm out, which is a rare occurence these days. Even if we go up the road for food, the portions are too big to even think about boozing. I took an awful pile of it in France during the Euros but those types of occasions are few and far between too.
Definitely the worst habit I ever got into again was drinking at home watching TV and I'm glad I knocked it on the head.

I drink most days, although rarely excessively (ie to the point of stupor). It's probably (obviously) too much but my medical advice tells me the damage to various organs is offset by the benefit to the heart.

I find drinking on my own to be shit. Should just sack off humanity.

Just realised that's been written whilst enjoying a nice Slovak lager with my dinner.

I usually only drink at Christmas and even that's only sparkly wine.

Just don't really get the fuss to be honest. Doesn't taste that good and makes you feel like shit.

When I tried getting drunk a couple of months ago my head just got a bit warm. What happens if you keep going?

Meh it's all bad for you. Few beers, pills and a line off a hookers arse is real living gents. The morning after, not so much.

Literally I drink most weekends but I wouldn't say to excess. In Czech Republic it's cheaper for a can of beer than it is for a bottle of water so I've had a skinful each day recently with the nice weather.

Oh it's great when you're 20 and out on the pull WITH THE LADS but sitting at home downing cans sounds depressing.

Depends what your doing. If going on a gaming session and the missus ain't around then I get a few cans in.

Drinking during a 'gaming session' sounds even more depressing than drinking alone in the dark.

I used to drink 5-6 nights a week in college. In hindsight I was a full blown alcoholic.

Then I graduated, realized I was obese, hated myself, started dieting and I think I've had 3 occasions where I've drank in the last 5 weeks. Also law school is impossible when you are always hung over because you have to crank out 6-8 hours of productivity every day.

I am way better at life now. I've also lost almost 40 pounds, probably about 2-3 month away from a posting a shirtless picture that will inspire vague jealousy in the weightlifting thread.

I've never really understood the massive stigma of drinking alone, unless drinking and getting battered are synonymous.

Is it drinking alone if you are with other people who aren't partaking themselves?

Yeah, I don't see the point of it sitting at home alone. You don't have to be 20 and out on the pull WITH THE LADS to enjoy a few drinks out with friends though.

I used to get wasted playing FIFA Ultimate Team probably 2-3 times a week last year. In my defense the night usually started with me starting to drink and then hook up with a Tinder girl, would then send her home afterwards, and then play FIFA till i blacked out. Those nights where I would order like $40 of food and then drunkenly devour while watching Netflix post FIFA session

    It was awesome.

Speaking of things that are bad for you, I bought an ecig recently as although I don't smoke that much these days (except when drinking), I thought it'd be best to try and stop completely.

Got an eliquid with far too much nicotine in it at first. Then I got a different one with less in it but it seemed to give me the shits. Fuck's sake.

I wouldn't count, say, having a glass of wine with dinner as 'drinking.'

    Anywhere between 5 - 10.

Not sure what you're getting at though. I'm not trying to portray myself as some hardened 40 a day Toms Waits soundalike. I enjoy it and I enjoy the routine of going out for a cig (especially at work to get away from fucking boring conversations) but I know it's not good for me so I was trying to make a healthier change with an ecig.

Maybe if you could just read in the first place, you'd not be trying to cover up your own embarrassment.

What did you get? I couldn't get used to them until I got onto a decent tank that didn't leak but it's a great job now. If the liquid isn't agreeing with you then try 100% VG, I found that much more agreeable (or try 100% PG if it doesn't, everyone is different). I'm down to a 0mg nicotine now, though I still smoke like a train if I do go out as I feel like a dick whipping the robot cock out in the smoking area.

    Robot cock.

I got an Innokin T18. I read a load of reviews and they were supposed to be a decent starter kit. I think I read something about it not being able to handle 100% VG as it'd fuck the coil though. I've ordered some new ones including one which is 80% VG so maybe they'll be better.

Robbed that one from a David O'Doherty show a few weeks ago.

Those T18's are gone very popular. I was very close to getting one myself only for the VG thing, but they're nice and discreet compared to the Nautilus that I do have. I drive so much and in the car is my one real crutch when it comes to smoking, so it's great for that. Only for it I'd be on 30 a day going up and down the country.

Also, regular milk thistle + fish oil consumption does a lot to reduce hangovers. I can confirm.

What's a "heavy session" of drinking for everyone? How many standard drinks? I would say 8+ but despite living in a frat house for 2 years I still have like no tolerance

Like a pikey, a two litre Strongbow straight out the bottle (hour and a bit in the freezer to get it just right, I'm not a savage) three nights a week does me grand.

Around 8-10 pints, and a few vodkas once I can't drink any more pints.

I'll have a couple of lunches a week with some people I used to work with and that'll involve a couple of pints and then there'll be 2-3 big sessions a month that involve about 5-6 (any more and I start to feel sick so I tend to move to water at that point)

Not as bad as I used to be, during university about 3-4 sessions a week, until I was throwing up was the norm and nothing you turns into a lard arse quicker than boozy sessions and a McDonald's breakfast the next day.
