His teammate did him a solid in qualifying as well, giving him a tow down the back straight. In race trim, the Mercedes looks the slightly better package, at least in Hamilton's hands.

The interviews with Marko and Horner after this will be quite something. Can already see Marko invoking some grand conspiracy nonsense.

Mercedes set the car up for the race conditions.

Max set his up for qualifying to try and gain track position on Lewis.

Who else believes Hamilton even one iota when he says that about his tyres? He'll probably do another 60 laps from here.

Red Bull have to try to force one, but now Perez is more than a pitstop behind, I'm not sure how many options they have.

Hard to see what they can do that Mercedes can't just copy a lap later.

He could but it would be illegal, unlike fighting hard for position.

He can cost him time but nothing like the first time, I forget how many blue flags you get shown before being penalised but we're into proper filthy tactics at that point.

I know it's a slightly false impression because of the lack of stabilisation but the helmet cam shots make it look like a nightmare to try and drive these things.

Hamilton committed to staying to the end now. Max needs about a second per lap from here.

Well now he's just got to get to the end on these tyres.

Think Merc probably made the right call there, on balance.

Exactly. He had no gears, but could have easily gone right next to the gap.

Verstappen was always going to do the opposite of Hamilton so he'd have been behind had he pitted.

Because then he'd have to overtake Verstappen on the track, which leaves it open to what we've seen Max do the last 10 or so times Hamilton has tried to overtake him.

Has anyone managed the catch up and overtake this season at all? I feel like we've seen this scenario numerous times and it always fizzles out.

Hamilton in Brazil. But yeah, mostly it fails due to dirty air.

On the old circuit this would be game over. 15 laps of greatness needed for either of them.

Then again, he does not need to overtake. Crashing him out works equally well.

If he does a Mansell/Adelaide here I think that would be the best/worst finish in F1 history, passing that and 2008.
