TTH (early) Xmas Quiz: World Cup edition

I was going to do this in December, but then I realised that half the questions could be out of date by then so I'd better post it now. Perhaps it will help you achieve World Cup FEVER or perhaps it will be just as shite as the general Qatar mess. Either way, here are 25 occasionally easy but mostly hard-ish trivia questions to while away your week. Answers in the thread or whatever.

    1. Who has won the World Cup Golden Boot even though his home country have never qualified? Eusebio (wullie)
    2. "The first one wasn't, second one was. The ball was still in play, so, effectively, it's a goal." Who uttered these words at a World Cup and who was he speaking to? Martin Keown, talking to Jonathan Pearce about goal line technology in 2014 (John Arne)
    3. What makes Wales and Ireland unique in the history of the World Cup? The only teams never to have picked a player from their home league (wullie)
    4. Who lost to France at three different World Cups and then finally beat them at a fourth, in his last ever World Cup match? Carlos Alberto Parreira (Lewis)
    5. Fill in the blanks: 1st ??? (29), 2nd ??? (22), 3rd ??? (16), 4th ??? (13), 5th Pelé (12)
    6. What links the following hit films of the 1990s: Cyrano de Bergerac; Reservoir Dogs; Jurassic Park? Each share a star with FIFA flop film United Passsions (wullie)
    7. USA (2018) were the second side ever to suffer this qualifying fate. Who were the first?
    8. Japan (one minute plus stoppage time) and the Netherlands (four minutes) are the only teams ever to have done what at a World Cup? Fallen behind to Australia (wullie)
    9. What happened in the 2018 final for only the third time ever and first time in 52 years?
    10. Which team's upset win in a World Cup knockout match prompted Peter Drury to delight: "This nation is going to dance all night!" Russia (Ben)
    11. Edgar Davids was the final ever player to do what at the World Cup? Score against Yugoslavia (Ben)
    12. Which team was knocked out in the group stage with a goal difference of +6? Hungary, in 1982 (Max Power)
    13. Mick McCarthy's Ireland were the last European side to do what in World Cup qualifying? Play against a non-European side (Ben)
    14. Sweden, Romania, USA (football); India, Bangladesh (cricket). What achievement links these sides?
    15. England in 2018 became the first side to do what at the World Cup since Turkey in 2002? Lost to the same opponent twice (niko_cee)
    16. Which English-born sensation starred during a World Cup and then sadly died just three months later? Paul the Octopus (Lewis)
    17. Beckham, Zidane, Kluivert, Burley. What links these players? All sent off at France 98 (Ben)
    18. This didn't happen at Italia 90, happened once (notoriously) at USA 94, and has happened multiple times at every World Cup since. What is it? Own goal (wullie)
    19. England were the first to do this at the World Cup, but have never done it since. Spain have done it twice, France once. Portugal have had three opportunities, but have never done it. Italy will likely never do it, but Belgium plausibly could. What is it?
    20. England, Wales, Cameroon, Ghana. Who is the fifth and final member of this World Cup club?
    21. Three clean sheets, won a penalty shootout, and knocked out by the eventual winners. Which nation's only World Cup appearance does this describe? Ukraine (igor)
    22. Vinicius Jr has the chance to achieve what first at this year's tournament? Score in the WC and CL finals in the same year
    23. "The [xxx] was absolutely top class, I have to say that. Top class." Which BBC World Cup pundit said this and what is/are the missing word(s)?
    24. The England manager was compared to which serial rapist in the lyrics of a top ten hit prior to the 2002 World Cup? Sir Jimmy Savile (randomlegend)
    25. 'Gutless cunt'. Who said this, about whom, after which World Cup match? Yevrah, about Fabio Capello, England 0-0 Algeria (igor)

My guess for number 1 would be someone French who was born in Africa. I presume that is enough to get me the point.

I was thinking maybe Klose [is he 'East German', would that count?] but it seems they did qualify once.

Either that or someone for the Soviet Union from one of the smaller nations

I thought Salenko but apparently he is actually Russian.

I assumed host nation "qualification" is still counted as qualification for the purposes of the question.

Other than Qatar, there are no examples of that so you can be safe that the country in question has never competed.

Number one appears to be 'Oldrich Nejedly', Golden Boot winner in 1934 for Czechoslovakia, but who was born in what was then Austria-Hungary.

I didn't have him in mind (and wouldn't set such an obscure answer). There is another.

    Carlos Alberto Parreira is right.

Eusebio seemed a bit obvious depending on the precise status of Portuguese Mozambique, which used to flit between colony and province, so I would still batter the quizmaster for my original answer to be counted.

    5. The order looks like the high scorer list: Klose, Ronaldo, Muller, Fontaine. But the goals are wrong.
    10. Russia beating Spain, I'm almost 100% sure. It's one of those random calls that still sticks with me.
    11. I think I know this: score against Yugoslavia.
    13. Has to be qualifying via the intercontinental play-off thing doesn't it? Can't remember Europe being involved since.
    17. Beckham, Zidane and Craig Burley have definitely had red cards so I'm saying that's the link.
    18. Indoor game? Fun fact, my dad was there at the '94 one. Actually I don't think so, because it no French stadium was covered for sure but I don't have a better answer.

    11. Yep
    13. Yep, last to play against a non-European side in qualifying. Scotland and Hungary also did so earlier.

    (already answered, nvm)

    6. What links the following hit films of the 1990s: Cyrano de Bergerac; Reservoir Dogs; Jurassic Park?

    That awful FIFA film
