Liverpool and City don't throw waves of players at you like Leeds do (and therefore don't have the same defensive vulnerabilities ready to exploit). They both move it quickly but there is much more precision and craft and ability to finish chances, so trying to block them defending deep is no madder than going at them and leaving big gaps to make their life easier. I say this in a nice way as I love watching Leeds, but they are basically throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks.
