Did Masvaure take a load of wickets? Pro quicks tend to be very rare up our way (almost always spinners zzzzz) but when one does rock up they invariably blow away the bottom half of the league.

He's a batter. He bowled off spin off one step and I had to warn him three times for licking the ball (this was 2022 before the law change and I couldn't be bothered to ping him). He was pretty shit and lived in a small shed behind the sightscreen at the club concerned. They summoned him for the warm up by shouting PRINCE! several times over a 15 minute period until he dragged himself out of bed.

You don't see many overseas quicks here either. I would certainly never sign one, injury risk. Mostly those that there are tend to be keeno Saffers or Australian grade all-rounders.

We haven't been terrible today but this Jaiswal lad can play.

England would be on 400+ if they won the toss

Keep them to around 420 and its a great effort. Anderson’s figures are vintage Jimmy in Asia

Yeah they must be disappointed that none of these lads have stayed with Jaiswal and batted us out of it. Got to get through the tail tomorrow morning. Could be another good match.

Real threat of a dispiriting trashwin 80 odd, mind.

90+ over day - halcyon days.

Starting to turn now, might be pretty grim by second innings.

7/1 for England to win. I bottled the 25/1 in the last game.

These Indians just don’t have it in them.

Dismissing them for 396 when the wonder child got 209 is a magnificent effort. Anderson ridiculous, I thought he'd finally had it last summer, appears not. Had time for a dust-up with trashwin as well.

    Need to go huge now.

Kuldeep will take about eight here because it’s in the English DNA that you are not able to pick wrist spin, especially the left arm variety.

Although as I say that, Crawley pumps him over cow for six.

The opening pair have been underrated. So often it seems they at least put a 50 partnership on(obviously at a good clip) just sets up the innings perfectly without usually having a monster opening stand.

Fancy a Root masterclass on this pitch.

I hope so, but something seems a bit off with Root mentally. I think he’ll have a lean series.

I can't tell you how much of a pleasure it is to receive a full blast of the great man pre 7am each morning in this series. Like a bracing sunrise walk. Puts a real pep in your step, as he would say with gusto if someone introduced him to the phrase.

Think the bazball superchases will be tough on this pitch, so we need a lead really which means Bairstow proving the critics wrong.

The English collapse from a decent looking position happens literally every series. Luckily Stokes or someone else manages to help out towards the end.

We'd have coached that action and his talent out of him years ago.

Was going to pose the what are we happy chasing question, but I guess the answer is whatever, and it looks like it might be a big number. Bundling them for 200 a best case scenario.

Think this one's irretrievable batting last, but I look forward to them proving me wrong.

250-odd in each first innings isn't enough, you can't really blame the top three for their performances so far, so Root and Bairstow seem to be the weak links.

You should never have Bairstow and Woakes. One or the other. Bairstow the better batter and Woakes the far better ‘keeper.

Wonder how it would have shaken out had Brook been available? Should be him at 5 and Foakes with the gloves but not sure it would have gone that way.

Bit of a simulate innings day tomorrow before we chase down 500 on day 4.

Baz loves Pope doesn’t he? I’m pretty confident it would have been Foakes carrying the drinks. Fatty needs to seriously deliver in the rest of this series or he’s out. He’s had his grace from the broken leg now.

He's also 34 now and as you say, a bit of a tank.

Jamie Smith, James Rew and Ollie Robinson (not that one) are waiting in the wings to fill that spot.

I haven't, but if I did it would be out. Don't pick up the ball. Batters always ask the fielders first or ideally just don't do it at all.

Very surprised at the outraged reactions everywhere. What if the non-striker was backing up and a run out chance was denied? What if the batter scuffed it with his glove or got sweat on the dry side, compromising fielding side's ability to look after the ball? There's no defence.

Batsmen have been picking up dead balls since time began. I don't see why that has to change now that they're batters but whatever, if that's what people want then fine. I suppose, like everything now, one must assume the worst of humanity and taint everything with that [like calls for asylum lawyers to be hanged].

In practice, it isn't a dead ball until the fielding side agree it's a dead ball. Hence the Jonny B flare-up at Lord's whereby traditionalists are outraged but the laws and modern convention are not on their side.

It's now under 'obstructing the field' as opposed to the old handled the ball dismissal, which illustrates the logic. Much better written law than it used to be.

I think logic is the wrong word there, but as a bowler I never much liked batsmen picking up the ball. If there were such a thing as the spirit of the game, then it no longer exists if the above is within it.

I also never really agreed with the handled the ball rule, as it seemed weirdly arbitrary, in that you could use any other body part to the same end and get away with it seemingly, so I guess that's why it was brought within the obstructing rule.

Safest way just seems to be leave the ball alone. If you're the batting side, nothing good can come of you picking up the ball.

Spirit of the game is a load of nonsense, it's the same as in any other sport, either you choose to be sportsmanlike or you don't. Laws won't save the former.

Where I'll go halves is that there are a lot of people (mainly in the subcontinent) who take glee in not being sportsmanlike as if they are throwing off the colonial classbound yoke by doing so, not sure that's as admirable as they imagine it is.

The spirit of the game is pretty much all cricket has going for it, a bit like golf.

It doesn't mean being honest [it does in golf], as batsmen will never walk or whatever, but it does mean behaving above the level of an absolute arsehole.

The spirit of the game is also present in rugby union and it's a sort of mutually assured destruction: we're all decent chaps, have something to lose and agree not to sully our reputations over a silly game. This doesn't translate well to some parts of the world, especially when their usually-marxist elites start writing about it on cricinfo or in books. The Australians sort of run with it in the form of their fair dinkum mateship stuff.

Contrast to football, a working class sport in which the participants have nothing to lose and therefore skulduggery is almost encouraged.

The spirit of rugby, at least union, is cheating, although however many years of the tmo has been spent eroding that.

We had quite a few chances to get rid of Gill early on there so they might have been in real bother had we done so.

Stokes with an absolute worldie catch and the stadium is silent. Get in the bin.

You have to think almost every other England side would have been absolutely blown out by now but despite a ludicrously inexperienced attack they just keep chipping away and staying competitive. Bodes well for the series.

If we cap this lead under 400 I’m not counting any chickens. Massive outsiders and we could easily crumble for 150 but you just can’t write off this lot.
