I'm pretty sure nobody in the Ecuador squad would believe they could actually beat England and we'd win as a result. The reverse is closer to being true if we play Holland and while LvG is hideously boring manager, he'll out tactic Waistcoat without even trying.

We’re turning in to a proper small time nation. The fans and the style of football.

What I've also grown to hate about him is the absolute drivel he comes out with. He's clearly an articulate man, but when you realise some of the things he says from his media polish and BLM playbook make no sense whatsoever, you also realise that nothing he says means anything at all.

I know someone mentioned it earlier, but us doing the knee and the Americans not doing it summed us up as a nation these days. We're more yank than the yanks.

It's also telling that your go to defence of Southgate's England is not to defend him, but instead cite other nations being shit.

That's always pretty much been my defence. Tonight was shit from Southgate and England but still enjoyable, there's no buzz in football like following your nation at an international tournament. I have absolutely no expectation that England will look like a good team or win a world cup (but they might) and I have never felt frustrated after watching an England game. I think we are just built different.

If we win something, it'll be accidental. The fact Southgate has come closer than most speaks to how bizarre the international game is.

Henderson for Bellingham was the most Southgate substitution ever and basically secured qualification. Looked pretty ropey for the twenty minutes before and didn't concede a shot after. Job done.

I watched every England sports team be conservative shite wasting great talent for 20+ years of my life (because that is culturally how we play sport in this country), even the rugby team that won in 2003 was pretty dull and didn't have to play the All Blacks or Springboks. Then our white ball cricket team threw that out the window from 2015, decided to play with ambition and actually use the talent at its disposal, and since then we have won 2/4 major tournaments and threatened to win the other two.

Because of that I'm kind of done with watching the football team, with its best array of players in my lifetime (maybe the top 5 players were better in the 'Golden Generation' but the top 15 are better now), try to game tournament football and deliberately draw 0-0 with the USA. It's no fun. I really hope we start playing better stuff in the knockouts because we have the players to do it and indeed have already done it against Iran, so it can be done.

We beat South Africa in the group stage in 2003, and had beaten New Zealand home and away over the previous twelve months. That team was the peak of English sporting mentality, to the point where it all rapidly collapsed afterwards.

Bellingham was rancid but the FIFA players weep at his substitution. Him and Rice, in combination with the full-backs being compeltely unable to link defence to attack was what led to that eye-bleeding performance. What a shambles CQ had to allow us to get pumped by this lot

Pretty much. The Golden Generation had the potential but it was in an era of genuinely big opposition. I never expected us to beat Germany, Portugal or Brazil. In 1990 and 1996, the runs were a pleasant surprise. Now we are genuine contenders.

Just looking at the group standings, it's a bit weird that USA didn't go all out for the win. Was basically a free hit for them, they needed to beat Iran regardless of whether they lost or drew tonight.

Yep, was the same situation for Ecuador earlier and they went for it. USA had no interest. Their manager, Bob Bradley (I know it's not Bob Bradley but it basically is), comes across as a bit of a dweeb.

Either that or England were just controlling the game too well from the back.

I just watched the second half, and I am glad that I missed the first. Terrible stuff.

Remember when Jimmy said that Poland and Mexico were terrified of losing? This is how teams that are terrified of losing look like (he was right about Poland).

It's in the European culture, really, the obsession with protecting the status quo, the fear of seeking something new, the dullness of the sheperd's pie.

This is the World Cup of the glancing header.

Is every contact in professional football actually as painful as the participants make it out to be? Every challenge in this game is resulting in screams of pain and rubbing limbs.

I suspect they're constantly trying to tweak it to see if they can up the number of goals per game a little and in thinking "ah if the ball is light / moves faster then..." they end up knackering it.

It's not difficult, they just take risks with tournament balls for marketing reasons. The World Cup ball must be one of the biggest product launches for Adidas in each four year cycle.

The 'Al Rihla' match ball developed for the World Cup is described by Fifa as "travelling faster than any ball"
Sort of weird that they're implying that the ball being faster is automatically a good thing.

Travelling faster than any ball is exactly what it does, actually. That means that the best team will be the one that is best at stopping it, i.e. who has the best first touch. Still can't see past Spain.
