As barren as the Bates years were at Leeds, they did have some comedy merit. You had to sort of admire what a cantankerous old bastard he was.
The apex being when he he got embroiled in a row with Chelsea (which he was clearly very keen for) after they tapped up a couple of our young players, and referred to their upper management as "shysters from Siberia", or something to that effect.
They then lodged an official complaint against him alleging offensive language, to which his response was (in an official club statement, might I add, this was on the website) that he hadn't laughed at anything as much "since Ma caught her tits in the mangle".
