I’ve to pick one myself this year (in the smaller class) but it’s looking like there’s huge delays on everything. The Caddy and Connect are the obvious choices, though the new version of the latter (that’s basically a Caddy with a Ford badge the same as the new Transporter will be a Connect with a VW badge) has never seen the light of day. I don’t think any of the other manufacturer groups do an automatic.
Awning job for camping, not thinking a fully converted one just sling a cooler and Ooni in the back and disappear for a weekend. Then have the use of one as a proper van when needed, like when I had a load of doors in the back of the Tucson the other week and the boot my father-in-law had tied down popped up mid journey. Manual is great if you’re in something exceptional to drive and out for the enjoyment (also applies to petrol over diesel), but given that 99% of the time we’re all just trundling along commuting, etc then auto is the definitely way forward.
Surprised it has taken this long for automatics to take over in Europe.
I drove an automatic around Spain, it was all well and good until you want to go up a hill at more than 15mph.
Or it snows and you can't engine break.
Freeing up your hand to touch up your makeup/adjust your bra sounds pretty fantastic tbf.
Automatics are shit.
Every single automatic since like the 60s has the option to manually shift down, so you can do both of those just fine.
The power to manually adjust gears you say? Imagine.
We’ve got a couple of Fords at work that are automatics and the gearbox’s are fucking useless. The Audi I just got rid of had an automatic that was decent but still not amazing. I’ve driven an RS6 Avant and the automatic was exceptional. If I’m not spending over £40k on a car then I’d still lean towards manual as it’s still very much a “pay peanuts, get monkeys” component.
I test drove a transporter a couple of weeks ago with the DSG in it and it was surprisingly good for a bus.

I know the BMW M135i is meant to be really good but I just hate the way they look. Golf GTI/R, Seat Leon Cupra, Peugeot 308gti were some of the others I've got in mind.
If you're set on a "hot hatch" then Golf R (pre-2020, before they started cheaping out on everything) is the way to go. Cupra 280/290 would be great also as they are VAG family.

Not entirely no, it just does need some degree of practicality.
The i20N and i30N? They are but still way over £15k second hand.
It's 90's Japanese so that's more like 10 year old anything else. About as bulletproof as you get and parts are cheap.
