I upgraded my phone to a Samsung S21 Ultra, picked up a Galaxy Book 360 and a Samsung Watch 4 Classic. I'm not even a Samsung fan boy, the offer of £525 cashback was too great.

I bought a £10 cd player from facebook marketplace this week - proper early 90s technics classic, which I have hooked up to my actually-not-that-shit-considering Chinese Amazon active speakers (Edifier 1800BTs ftr). The highlight though was saying to my momz "i wonder if they've left a cd in there", pressed eject, and to my absolute delight there was a copy of the debut album by Big Brovaz looking up at me. I feel this is more an insight into exactly when the previous owners stopped using a hi-fi separate CD player than any reflection of their lasting fandom. Nu Flow is still a banger though, as well as the name of the album and the first track. A front-loaded album and career.

at least a good mechanism in a salt grinder makes more sense than in an expensive watch, I suppose, as it could conceivably make it noticeably better at the thing it is meant to do.

It’s a fucking 100 quid pepper grinder you wank. What do you think it’s going to do? All I did was recommend you a better looking one that isn’t 100 quid.

Because then you don’t have colourful blocky things to show people.

Maybe they’re great and so much better than other grinders (does it even fucking matter with something like pepper?), but the design is definitely a bit try-hard which would make me wary.

Nothing, really. Salt grinders are a bit unnecessary and I should probably just have a coarse and a fine salt on hand depending on what I want it for.

Pepper should be freshly ground though.

Most pepper grinders, even expensive ones, are absolute shit and fall to bits or stop working entirely after a few months.

You can buy the thing of peppercorns in a grinder that you can toss when empty and get a new one.

True, though I guarantee you 99% of people who’d say that will just buy new peppercorns in a disposable plastic thing so they can refill their climate change one anyway.

How shit is shit anyway, and just how shit does it need to be a mashing up a peppercorn that it will ruin your dinner compared to one for a hundred quid?

Because you recommended one based on the fact you didn't like what the one I was looking at looks like, which I don't care about. You're the one who got pissy.

Well, a lot of them are shit to the point they don't actually fulfil the function they are designed for. If I'm cooking something which requires a significant amount of pepper grinding (which is not uncommon) then crappy ones are absolutely painful.

My mum's pepper grinder that she's had since at least the 90s has an incredibly satisfying action but it's impossible to track the model down. I got given a Le Creuset one for a Christmas couple of years ago and it's fucking terrible so I can see where RL is coming from here tbf.

Yeah we've had our one as long as I can remember and it's grand, probably only cost a tenner as well.

It may be fetishising the past, but I feel like an equivalently cheap one these days would be a lot more shit. The fear of getting some absolute wank Chinese Amazon shite that breaks in five minutes is probably the one thing that occasionally motivates me into looking at ridiculous stuff like £100 pepper grinders as well. There is a limit though.

My mother threw away/bust (she can't remember) her pepper grinder, so I've been doing it up by hand this week with a bowl and a flat-bottomed tumbler glass. That works.

I've seen that one on YouTube loads looks decent.

My wife bought me an big tall old school Italian pepper grinder a few years ago that does the business, still get the pestle and mortar out occasionally for loads at once. I'm not against using pre ground pepper if its for big cuts in the BBQ, you get the even coverage without the same harshness of freshly ground.

For salt I just use table salt, kosher salt and Maldons depending on applications no need for a grinder really.

Our salt and pepper grinders were about a quid each from Asda. That's the appropriate price and level of interest they deserve.

Orders of magnitude better. I too stick Tellicherry peppercorns in my grinder.

More than anything though, grinding lots of pepper is a pain in the arse, so a good grinder helps a lot.
