Niko Not the best game game, or occasion, but maybe the best performance. We're not going to be playing any Champions League finals, anyway (until 2023 at least).

I was coincentally reading about this stat in an Athletic piece () and was surprised to see Trossard is 6th in the league, Cancelo 7th.

Why didn't you mention Bruno Fernandes was first? (edit, never mind - that was what you were replying to.)

The actual worst thing about it is it got me to thinking and you're probably right, and I'm a solid 10 to 15 years into the watching Brighton game [as a somewhat impartial observer].

Is expected assists calculated with reference to the expected quality of the people on the end of the expected assists?

Paging James. I would imagine they just take the xG figure of every shot, and call that the xA of the person who made the last pass (if there was a pass made). That would be logically consistent, at least.

Or you'd get 1 whole xA for a chance created over a certain xG threshold (0.8 or whatever a penalty is) rather than being able to clock up 500 passes to 0.02 xG situations for the same credit.

xA is a much better indicator than actual assists, while the opposite is true with goals.

Isn't xA just a fancy dan modern day version of Key Pass or Key Contribution, as I believe it became?

Not quite this, but 'pre-assists' - the pass before the assist - was also in that Athletic article. As you can imagine.

Turns out Cancelo is amazing at everything.

You're forgetting that xG is even more important than actually scoring the expected goals.

Pre-assist sounds like an unwanted profession. Deputy Junior Vice Assist sounds so much better.

Mount in final third again just being an absolute embarrassment but getting commentator's plaudits. Geezer, pivot to a deep-lying Milner regen and you can have a prem career.

And, on the subject of the Euros, is there any chance the gangbusters vaccination strategy is going to see a PACKED Wembley for all of England's matches whilst the continent looks on in irate envy? Or will UEFA not allow it?

If that were the case then we should have the whole thing over here. I'd go to a socially distanced St Mary's to watch Hungary and Bosnia keep their shape for 90 minutes.

Werner must be fucking knackered. The amount of short sprints he’s done in that rain is mental.

"See the Champions League, yeah? What if we take the worst bit and give everybody way more of that. But get this right, in the process we'll also make matches between big European teams completely mundane and ruin the whole benefit of the tournament in the first place. It's a win win!"

I don't understand what such a system offers anyone that the current system does not. Other than the last round being a dystopian heap of chaos (and probably arranged draws etc) as teams jockey for 'top 8' and 'top 24' places, it would just be a procession of context-free random matchups with no rhyme or reason. Those big teams who win their first few games would be able to ease off the gas with a 'top 8' place assured, making the whole thing even less meaningful.

At the same time I see UEFA have quite openly appealed to England to abolish the League Cup so that these extra 4 rounds can be slotted in. Do they know how many teams are in the League Cup vs how many are in the Champions League? They have abandoned all sense of what football is in their desperation to head off the 'Super League' which won't happen anyway.

It probably gives the super clubs more reassurance that they'll qualify each year. They'll have a shot at both top four in their domestic leagues and top eight in the proposed CL format.

Not that much - if they're on a down year in the sense that they aren't going to make top 4, then they will have to do the equivalent of winning their CL group to get in via the top 8 route, which doesn't seem a lot more likely (though is possible I suppose depending on which compendium of European destinations they draw in the 10 match schedule).

I thought if you get a goal scoring opportunity (the pen) you are no longer sent off? The polish lad definitely tried not to foul (if he did at all) while Luiz clearly just did a defender "oops I fouled him" move.

If he managed to perfectly place his knee so that the toe of the player at it's furthest extension just scrapes his knee, he's the greatest dark arts person in their world and he's just not.

Only if you make an attempt for the ball so if you accidentally obstruct someone you’re off.
