Decorating the livingroom, under the carpet was a snipped bit of telephone wiring. So I re-terminated it on a phone socket and I've got broadband on it now so I can finally have my failover solution.

Previously I thought the line only came in upstairs and that was it.

Can you link two PC's together to share files between them via an Ethernet cable if neither is connected to a network? I recall it being possible on XP with a crossover cable but not sure these days.

Don't see why not. Windows can do a sharing centre just use a crossover and put them on the same network in terms of layer 3 addressing.

It's almost easier to set up a quick network but there are also tutorials on YT that explain it better than I ever could.

What's layer 3 addressing? I was just going to try setting the mask to 255.255.255.0 and then setting the first 3 sections of the IP addresses the same in the ipv4 settings. Would that work? I'm not sure how to set it up in windows 10 after doing that though.

Do I need them on a network and use an ethernet hub for that?

Yes so 192.168.1.2 and .3 then mask 255.255.255.0.

You could plug them both in to a switch yes.

Has anyone came across File Explorer opening really slowly on Windows 10? Everything else opens instantly on my laptop but you've a good 5-10 seconds before File Explorer pops up, and while it's not that big a deal it's annoying as it wasn't always like that and the machine is less than a year old with very little on it. Most links I found said to set it to show Computer by default instead of Quick Access but it didn't help.
The latest update to Windows 10 seems to have fixed this.

It seems to have made me require a password to login, and if I turn it off it automatically logs me in. Previously it would load up and ask who was signing in, we’d click our name and log in without a password. Can’t seem to get back to that.

My grandad bought his wife an Alexa thing because she has early dementia and he seems to have figured that she could ask it the time and what day it is. They don't have an internet connection, but he claims that whoever he bought it off - which is more likely to be someone he knows rather than an actual shop - said you don't need one. You do though, don't you? Even for basic things like that.

Probably worth a Strongly Worded Letter and/or referring it to the Consumer Complaints Commission (or whatever it is). It obviously needs an internet connection.

I went round to set it up earlier. I had to set the tablet up, create a Google account to download the app through whatever their store is, then create an Amazon account to activate it... And the fucking tablet wouldn't accept the IP for it. I have no idea why, but given the set-ups for these things are generally idiot-proof I can only conclude that the tablet was being a shit. Throw in my mother sat on the phone to customer service asking me searching questions like 'What is the number on the thing?' and 'Would it work on our internet?', and I think I did very well not to smash everything up.

Graphics card doesn't render video in Handbrake. Your processors fucked or it's overheating, maybe caused by your processor being fucked.

I'm having problems with darling Microsoft's XPS viewer. Specifically, I can't copy text out of xps documents as doing so causes the viewer to crash. Google tells me this is a known issue but Gates and co seem to be doing fuck all about it. Previously I've been working from pdfs and they've been fine, but converting the xps file isn't working in terms of being able to copy out of the resultant pdf - it's just all windings-esque nonsense. HELP!

Go to Power Options in Control Panel. There'll be an option for 'what happens when I close the lid'.

How do you embed a youtube video to play from a specific point in the video? Say 11 minute and 22 seconds into the video.

I can link direct to the video and it timestamps correctly, but not on here

This looks to be my current hard drive. So do I just need to get a 2.5" SATA SSD replacement or are there other factors to consider?

Any 2.5 inch SSD will do - the more space the better, but they start getting expensive over 480GB. My advice is to get an external HDD for storage, unless you're barely using any of your current HDD.

I've had this 3 years now and I am currently using 251GB of the hard drive, so I reckon a 500GB would be grand to be on the safe side (there seems to be nothing between 256 and 500).

Was going to buy this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078WQT6S6

Or would I see much improvement with this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inc.../dp/B00P73B1E4

It depends what you're using it for, really. I work with a lot of large files, so I'd pay the extra £15 for the increased data transfer speed. But 95% of people wouldn't notice any difference.
