Canned noise and no noise are two cheeks of the same flabby arse - both are devoid of the real emotion which makes football worthwhile.

What they're doing at the moment is purely keeping the show on the road for money and it shows up in the stupid scorelines and complete lack of focus of the teams and players.

Incidentally, I live right next to a non-league ground and this afternoon my road was absolutely crammed with cars belonging the maximum 600 supporters allowed to attend matches at that level. Really is stupid that even a limited number aren't allowed to go to professional games.

‘Football’ will roll on and the longer this lasts the more they’ll realise that fans are more a hindrance than anything. We’re really into the television age now.

Not a chance. Fans make the clubs and the suits know that. Great opportunity to sell the brand to your foreign investors and wealthy customers.

That’s actually one of the main issues with the mentality around all this. Not everything has to match the wrong thing just because the wrong thing is being done. The issue isn’t nobody at pro games, the issue is that 600 at a shite game. Getting them stopped should be the mentality.

Absolutely no chance. If anything this has shown how much the atmosphere contributes. We're due 38 rounds of pre-season friendlies here. Some of them costing £15 a pop. If it were to carry on the sport would die.

Asians can buy jerseys and jackets the very same with no fans or with fans. The trick will be getting a robust enough mechanism so they can exclusively stream in those countries the way they used to do the whore friendlies there.

I sort of understand the broken logic that gets to that Mané decision, but something has surely gone wrong, or am I just being obtuse?

They've had to change the handball rule to remove the upper arm for the (idiotic) strict liability goal ruling out rule, yes, but that doesn't mean you can actually, legally and intentionally play the ball with your upper arm, does it? As in, say, you can't intentionally block goal bound shots on the line with your bicep [or the correct part of your elbow], can you?

Chelsea were allowed a goal with upper arm used in the build up yesterday, but then again there was the Newcastle penalty for Diers 'handball' so who knows.

Yeah, and Havertz had one earlier in the season (and Jota?) where the ball simply touching the upper arm wasn't deemed sufficient to invalidate a goal, but there is a difference between saying something isn't handball and that that part of the body is now a part you can intentionally play the ball with, isn't there?

If that is the rule, then instead of doing that weird hands behind the back thing there's surely a niche for players who can stick their upper arms out whilst folding their forearms behind them in some sort of contorted chicken pose?

Dier's one was because the upper arm was above the head. Fuck knows why, but that was the justification wasn't it?

It's all mental regardless. I know we all moaned about the errors, but VAR has just made things more frustrating and there's atleast one manager / fan groups sent off the deep end every weekend now.

Reset the game (world?) to 2016 please.

Var solves no problem and just creates more while killing the game.

Did they review the Newcastle goalkeepers position yesterday on the penalty? Wasn't he further off the line than de gea was the other day? Is there any reason for these stupid interventions that no one asked for?

VAR brings that armchair debate onto the pitch which is not what you want. You want accuracy in decision making and I do not see Liverpool's offside as accurate. He's level, it's on. Pickford's lunge I can go either way on. It's clumsy but, as a goalkeeper, it's something you can get away with.

If you're splitting hairs, you shouldn't make the decision. Especially if you're super-imposing lines on to a pitch with no real consistency. The NFL gets that stuff right for first downs because their cameras are level. Hawkeye the entire pitch and we're golden. Until then, you'll have this.

After my belting sensor solution, I also wonder if making the defender's line the same thickness as RL's girth would sort this out too. Obviously however thick the lines, there will always be marginal calls but presumbaly the linesman flags obvious ones that go beyond the (slightly) thicker line so it should lead to less marginal calls.

Isn't the rule that one foot has to be on (or behind) the goal line when the penalty is taken? I think he kept one foot behind the line.

That puts you close to where (I think) Parkrun originated.

I was assuming you'd be naming a team a couple of tiers up the pyramid with that sort of crowd. That's the level I used to watch, and my team got about 100 per game.

I'd be surprised if they actually got more than 100 in normal times, but maximum 600 are allowed, so for clubs like that it's business as usual. In fact they might be getting more attendance than usual due to displacement from other games and just the general lack of things to do at the moment.

Their team really is very decent. Bale to come in with Bergwjin and Lucas as back up. They’re back to having four really decent full backs to choose from and the midfield has looked good, especially with Ndombele finally getting game time, who is absolutely brilliant.

Maybe lacking in centre half but Mourinho in charge sorts that for the time being.
