    Zidane leaves Real Madrid

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44315700

Where does he go from here? It doesn't sound entirely voluntary in my opinion, what with the talk of the team needing a different voice and methodology. Wenger to replace him?

Wenger has lolled himself out of any top job over the past decade and Pochettino has just signed a new contract.

Hopefully they take Pep off City, although his history likely prohibits that.

Zidane's a really odd one. Is it just me or is there a prevailing sentiment that people aren't quite sure how good he is?

    Old bastard.

No this is definitely true. At the same time, it's Bizarre, because in his time as manager he's won 3 Champions League trophies in 3 years, as well as the league in one of those seasons (which in Spain is what it is).

In fact, probably no other manager currently active has won so much as he has compared to the years he's been active.

He's managed not only to win things with Real, but also to keep the Squad harmonious (mostly), deal well with Superstars such as Ronaldo (but maybe not Bale, and maybe that's where the doubts come from in England), as well as he's managed to bring through and develop a plethora of home-grown players into really competent players, such as Isco, Carvajal, Nacho, Asencio, Vazquez - all which weren't really much to show off with 3 years ago (maybe barring Isco).

Still, I guess it all comes from the fact that he sort of "inherited" the team he has, he's enjoyed authority at the club perhaps based on the fact that he's been there so long (even before being a manager). He hasn't done anything else, and he still hasn't been at Real Madrid for long enough to get to the status where you are considered great by being consistent over enough time (say like Ferguson).

So I suppose there's a sense he needs to manage some other teams and try some other things to actually prove what he can do when the circumstances are different.

I don't see him continuing in management, to be honest. It doesn't feel like being The Greatest Manager To Have Ever Managed is a particular goal of his, and he really has nowhere to go but down. I mean, I'd love him at Juve, but it seems more likely that he'll go into punditry or something like that.

He might bide his time and wait for the France job to open up. I could definitely see that.

The France job probably the only one that requires more ego management than Real Madrid.

I can see him having a Beckenbauer style life.

That's the key for me. Tactically, Real didn't look all that impressive, but the squad is full of good players and having someone with the prestige of Zidane seems to have carried them to that success. It just feels you can't "play diva" when you have Zidane at the helm (who was a footballing genius as well as a Real legend of sorts).

    All I’ve read is this:

"I am very happy at Tottenham. It would be disrespectful to Daniel for me to force a move. I have just renewed with Tottenham and am happy."
"I am happy at Tottenham because they let me work and we are growing together. Right now, I want to focus on planning for next season and keep out of all the things that are being said."
"The link now with Madrid is normal and I take it with all normality. I am committed to Spurs and still have a long contract with them I just signed. I am happy where I am, and to be here talking about this book."

When asked if rumours about a release clause are true, Mauricio Pochettino said: "No it is not. Neither written nor verbal."

When asked whether he was ready for a challenge like Real Madrid, Mauricio Pochettino replied: "Right now I am ready for lunch. I am looking forward to going back to London."

He’s left enough wriggle room to leave without having said he’s not going to, sure, but ‘as good as gone’ is massively reaching.

The only bit you've left out is why I've said it. When they say this then there's only one way it's going.

"When Real Madrid call you, you have to listen to them but it doesn't depend on me," Pochettino told Spanish newspaper El Confidencial.

That’s the first time I’ve read that. How reliable are they? It seems pretty out of tune with all the quotes I’ve seen banded about. Admittedly, mine are from a Spurs friendly source.

The time is right, four years and half a billion quid (or whatever it is) later, to launch a David Moyes revisionist movement.

They should have done a bridge year with Mike Phelan in charge, and then gone to Moyes.

Mike Phelan bin mans his way to the title by letting the 'dressing room' run things, it all falls apart the following year when they senior players become shit, and today he manages Blackburn via Aston Villa and Rangers. Next up, Wigan. Then Rochdale. Then whoever else round there is worse. What league are Port Vale in?

Roberto di Matteo's European Cup winning bin man stint remains underrated (Schalke, Aston Villa and the golf course for him). It's almost as if players matter more than managers.

Speaking of former Real Madrid managers and former assistant Man Utd managers i noticed Carlos Quieroz is STILL manager of Iran when I was playing FIFA's world cup

How much could they be paying this guy?! You'd imagine there are other jobs he could take outside of oh idk meddling in Iran?

Pochettino is staying at Spurs by the look of it.

There are a lot of reports going around right now linking you with the Real Madrid manager job. Would you be ready for that now?

Now I’m ready to go for lunch. No. Not to take over Real Madrid. I’m excited to come back to London. The project is exciting. I’m here now and the most important thing is the book. I understand the rumours, but that is our life. That is the sport we chose. That is the passion that translates to everyone. Right now I am so happy. So happy with my new contract I signed a few days ago. What will happen tomorrow? I don’t know. But I will always tell you.

Football is football and ends up putting everyone in your place. As I explained before, the most important thing is to enjoy every single day. Life is very short and we need to spend the day enjoying life and not worry about what will happen tomorrow. I’m so happy and proud to be at Spurs and the trust that Daniel Levy has shown to me. And of course, we have a lot of dreams, and objectives. But for me the most important thing is to enjoy today. What happened over the last few hours has increased expectations of our book release. But what I can tell you is that I’m so happy at Tottenham.

This is the 13 time European champions, arguably the biggest club in the world, surely it would be impossible for you to turn them down? Nobody says no to Real Madrid.

For you it’s impossible. You think? Yeah but you’re not me.
