Trying to do such extremely literal translations is surely nonsense. If Romanians are telling you it means "the black guy" then I think it's pretty reasonable to accept that, rather than arguing that ACKSHUALLY the direct translation is "the black".

People are always going to use a unique identifier for a person in a group: fat, bald, ginger, tall, girl, guy and skin colour sits in there too. You absolutely would say 'the white one' and nobody would give a shit. Race exists. Skin colours exist. If you have a white man and a black man standing next to each other and you have to select one of them for whatever reason; 'the black one' is a perfectly valid answer.

You would say 'the white guy' if, say, you were refereeing a Chicago public school basketball game, because it's a useful descriptor if he's the only white guy on the court. Similarly if there's only one black guy in the coaching staff. Romanians are full of malice from top to bottom though, so I guess you could assume anything you wanted to about his intentions
