Do you get free poppadoms with your Indian?

    A brief national survey.

I don't know if this happened everywhere at some point in time or if it's locale specific, but at some point in my life poppadoms went from being free to costing about a pound a pop.

Do you get free poppadoms with your takeaway?

They're listed at 50p at the ones round here but they always put at 2-4 in for free.

I think it depends on order amount. Above something like £10 I think they launch them in free, below that you’re charged.

It sounds like they've got a bit too comfortable in their adopted homeland.

When I lived in Birmingham 5+ years ago, they were a tiny amount, like 20p each or something. And if you ordered any amount, they'd throw in loads.

They seem to have cottoned onto the fact that it's an easy money spinner, and started charging ridiculous amounts for them. I was looking at the menu for a place the other day and they were £1.40 each.

I have been trying to get red onions in portsmouth for 6 years and they have no idea what they are. I reckon I tried about my 20th indian take away in that time this evening and same script. White onion diced up with fucking cucumber and tomato.

It's fucking ridiculous. I asked for red onions and described them once and the gonad bought me a diced red onion.

    Somethimes. Shit poll.

They usually give something free, but it's often Bombay Potato or Bahji's instead.

On the flipside, the Chinese ALWAYS give free Prawn Crackers.

What could you get for less than a tenner? An onion salad?

i think you can get a sensible amount of food for one person for less than a tenner at an indian, but only if you're being a boring calorie-counting cunt, and collecting your order. Like, a cheap curry and rice could easily fall below the £10 threshold, but i feel like it kind of misses the point of getting an indian takeaway.

Red onions are brilliant. We've definitely got the best Indian mob in Manchester for variety.

Popadoms aren't free usually but some do hit that trigger point of sending them. The local in Fife sends a free pizza for orders over £50 because you need pizza as well as loads of curry.

By red onions do you mean the chutney/relish thing they give with poppadoms in restaurants, right?

They're just normal pizzas which adds the mystery.

First Manchester invents a bowl full of onion with Paprika chucked at it, calls it "Red Onion" and gets pissy when they're given red onion.

Now Taz wants people to eat Rice fucking Pudding.

    You've all run mad.

Poppadoms normally free and if you do order some then you always get more than you asked for, although the little bag of limp salad is an ever present from any indian I've ever ordered from.

Never the bag, but I eat the onion salad with the poppadoms and dip when eating in a restaurant. (Or I did when that was a thing 18 years ago).

I've always said poppadoms are just big ready salted crisps, and with ready salted being the shittest flavour, I'm not bothered.

(Although the walkers sensations poppadoms are, indeed, sensational)

They are crisps that you use to scoop up mountains of curry. Show some respect.

If you're just eating them like you'd eat crisps then I'm not surprised you're so wrong about them.

Can we put some respect on the poppadom please? They are a vital component of the balti experience.

If this was always the case they’d be good, but this is only the case when you get a takeaway. If you eat in they serve them with the little rubbish dips (and if you’re with another couple they’ll undoubtedly double-dip, because you’ll forget to tell them not to until it’s too late, because people should not need to be reminded no to ) and don’t bring your curry until everyone’s finished their poppadoms.

Like, they could be good, but naan bread serves the exact purpose you describe, making poppadoms utterly pointless. It’s like going for a burger but having a pack of pombears before you order.

As someone who's friendship group is more than 50% of Indian background, I was surprised to learn the following facts.

    • Samosas are meant to be served with ketchup.
    • Indians always order their curry with chips, not rice. Rookie move, is the exact phrase that was used.
    • They always serve hot curries with yoghurt, so you can temper the spice to your taste. Even if you order a madas or vindaloo, it doesn't have to be really spicy.

    I think there's a 40% chance they're winding me up.

Mike does that, fair play to him, and everyone acts like it’s weird. Even two tables over give a mystified glance.

Just bypass poppadoms and get straight to the curry please.

Especially when I bet some of you poppadom nonces are “too stuffed” to actually finish the thing you actually ordered and wanted.

Also +1 for chapati. Was recommended by my man Waseem and I’ve never looked back.

I've always done it and I don't think I've ever had that reaction (but I may just be oblivious).

In an ideal world, I don't want to touch a knife and fork for the entirety of the meal. All Poppadoms and Naan.

Chapati's are the way to go. I've not had a super hot curry in years (like a vindaloo), I just don't see the point of burning my insides out without enjoying the flavours.

Might have to order a curry tonight.

Madras is about as hot as I go. Anything hotter than that and you can't taste anything anyway.
