The NHS sort out the logistics of a mass vaccination campaign every year. Why would the army - who have literally zero experience doing anything similar - be better at it?

Based on my albeit limited and anecdotal experience, the NHS are doing an incredible job getting it up and running.

For the same reason it wasn't you and your clammy stethoscope putting those Nightingale hospitals together. The logistics of the proper mass rollout are going to be the biggest government job since the war, and they are quite good at that.

I think the government see that as a sign of failure.

Tomorrow I'm expecting them to announce primary to go back as normal, with secondary possibly having more staggered restrictions (than have already been announced).

    Are they? Based on what?

The way you end up with things which look good on paper but don't actually work in practice is by putting the organisation in the hands of people who have zero experience or understanding of how they actually work.

Is that even true about the nightingale hospitals? The hospital I work in was being set up to be one and I know the army had nothing to do with that.

The army have experience of basically everything when it comes to logistics. They spend their lives training and doing exercises for these sorts of scenarios, and are orders of magnitude more disciplined than other organisations would be. In the event of needing to vaccinate 65 million people very quickly, it would be insane not to lean on them.

I'd get the army involved if the jabs were coming in at a rate to allow it. That can only really happen if the Oxford AstraZeneca one gets approved and they've been manufacturing like crazy.

Yeah, because half the NHS managers are people like ex-army who have zero medical experience and understanding of how the service is actually delivered.

The GP practice my mum works in has an ex-army guy as the practice manager and he is predictably a complete disaster.

I'm sure he's good at managing in the army because he understands what he's managing.

As a simple example, he set it up so the practice gives 5 minute slots for flu jabs (which take literally 30 seconds) whilst cutting the length of the appointments for COPD and diabetic reviews from 15 minutes to 10 minutes (things which take probably half an hour to do properly). It's a simple thing, but day to day it makes an enormous difference, and because he doesn't understand what it is he's managing he can't do it well.

Today we're getting emails from managers about how there are outbreaks amongst staff so we need to maintain social distancing at all times between staff even during handovers.

When you query how we're supposed to do this when 8 people have to attend handover and the room we're given to do it in is basically a cupboard they have no answers.

But seriously, regardless of my whining about the Lee-tards, the NHS actually has experience organising vaccination programmes and so far it's going really well with this one. Taking it away and giving it to the army who have no experience would be nuts IMO. I can see how their practical support at vaccination centres etc. would be useful though. There's no reason they can't get them giving jabs for example.

I don't think you would 'take it away and give it to the army', you would just use them because it will be needed for the scale we're talking about.

Matches are getting called off and it’s spreading so quickly now anyway we need to do what we can to stop that.

Pretty sure there’ll be a break.

How many countries actually achieved 'zero covid', and of those, how many were within 100 miles of any other sovereign state?

I know for sure that the answer in Europe is 'none whatsoever'.

Good to see the Liberal Party scum predictably keep the 3rd Test in Sydney despite the Northern Beaches still living in level 4 lockdown and the rest of the country declaring Greater Sydney a covid hotspot with strict 14 day quarantine upon entering ever other State and Territory.

This can do one as well.

I would put everything I have on there being no equivalent tweet from her about China being originally responsible and, in addition, lying about it.

'We're also responsible for exporting the current strain globally' gives her away - presumably she isn't putting Cyril Ramaphosa in the same dock for exporting the supposed 'South African strain'.

People who do those Twitter threads detailing exactly why they believe they are absolutely on the money about something, usually in an incredibly tedious and self-important tone, are arseholes.

"A brief summary of why I know best and everything I'm about to write is the absolute be all and end all on the issue. Thread." etc.

There's probably a bit of a grim acceptance that China aren't going to do the right thing; I guess the hope is we should aspire to be better than that. That said I do agree the hand-wringing about us 'exporting' this strain seems like bollocks, but then I'm not really qualified to talk about it.

The biggest problem that has become apparent is people won't stick to the required restrictions for a sufficient amount of time for them to actually be effective, so you're stuck with half-arsing it to try and keep them onside.

New Zealand is like the 4th biggest State of Australia and both Western Australia and Queensland have done better than that micro nation.

    Vietnam is far more impressive.

If the track and trace is anything to go by I assume our world beating vaccination rollout will involve dumping all the doses of the vaccine in central London and trusting everybody to share nicely.
