Just watched that Super Pets thing, and whilst I accept kids' films aren't necessarily meant to be any good [some are superb] this was the kind of bland, banal shite I broadly expect most of the 'extended universe' superhero garbage to be. Coupled with the trailer for 'Shazam' and something I saw the other day for She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law are they just full-on taking the piss with this comic book stuff now? I know it's hardly a hot take, but when you see so many 'respected' actors appearing in these things because, after all 'they have to make a living', it does feel a bit cultural end of days.

It's the same as Star Wars, we live in a content thirsty world so just shovel any old shit with a licence out.

There was a thing that went round twitter the other day where Matt Damon explained it's because there are no longer DVD sales to make a second stack of money on a good movie, so you have to make all your money at the initial box office take, and it isn't therefore in a studio's interests to take a risk on any original ideas.

For movies, anyway. Fuck knows how it works with TV/streaming.

I suppose having a fan base made up entirely of disposable cash heavy virgins is both a blessing and a curse. On the plus side, they will buy any old shit just to keep their collection up to date, but on the other hand, when they've finally finished wasting their lives and head off to their - early, extra wide, Rustlers sponsored - graves, this turgid shite will finally die its own death. A death it should have died at some point in the 80's. Fuck Star Wars.

Any Trekky nonces lurking can fuck off n'all.

Midnight Special came out of nowhere for me on BBC1 one night after news. I couldn't watch it then but I recently caught it on iplayer and it was a worthwhile affair. Outrageous cast.

I prefer Ronald to Rustlers, thanks.

Watched Last Night In Soho, 6/10 for me. Interesting concept but let down by it being not scary and the end was a bit of a mess.

+1 for Yev's take on I Came By. Certainly not GOOD but fun enough. High Bonneville as a baddy is entertaining and him getting his Jason Voorhees "he's somehow snuck up on you" slasher villain moments are excellent.

Completely agree with the contents of that spoiler Ian. In fact, it made me think more about it and fuck it, I'm giving it an actual "it's good" now. Probably only 6/10 good, but that's so much better than so many films I've seen over the last few years.

Watched Thor: Love & Thunder - not a bad film if you like that sort of thing, but not as good as Ragnarok. Weird that they had the Guardians mooching about at the start then didn't bring them back for a team up at the end. Christian Bale was good, as usual

Rewatched a film called keith last night that I imagine most on here would hate, but I really like and thankfully it held up nicely.

Also rewatched American pie 2 which, although a completely different kind of film is also still great viewing.

Not that I mind it that much, but they really did go balls deep with the slapstick on these the more they went on.

Having no wrestling to watch this morning (I get up at 5am and usually have 2-3 hours to myself) I stuck on The Black Phone. Nowhere near as scary as the trailer made it look but it was an okay watch for a sleepy Sunday morning, if not completely unrealistic and a bit silly. The little sister was very good.m

Recommendations welcome for any film that came out in 2021 or later, as chances are I won’t have seen it.

Just had my first experience of non Maguire Spiderman an and it’s fucking terrible. What was the thinking behind making him a useless nervous 12 year old? And (this may be explained if I watched more) why does his mask move with his facial expressions? Is it more than just a suit in the newer ones?

Which one? Just looked them up and I’ve only seen Homecoming (I’ve only seen about 6 of the marvel movies and enjoyed precisely two, the other being the first deadpool, and nothing newer than Spider-Man Homecoming) and thought it was actually good.

Tom Hollands Spider-Man is probably closer to the comic book version of the character. It’s probably more fitting with the current state of the MCU as well.

In fairness it was a very short clip where he had some lads hand stuck to the back of a car with a web and was blathering like an idiot. I flicked back later and he was wearing a tracksuit and swimming goggles instead of the suit so I’ve no idea what’s gone on, but I don’t think I want to find out any more.

Fucking hell. Speak No Evil is absolute must for any horror movie fans. Danish family makes friends with Dutch family on holiday. That’s all you need to know.

Like @Dark Soldier has advised for similar films in the past: Don’t look it up, just watch it.

I usually really like the director and Ana de Armas is reliably good, but I'm not really sure what the point of Blonde is. Three hours of Marilyn Monroe being beaten and raped, or just otherwise interacting with everyone she meets like an alien.

And when your thesis doesn't amount to much more than 'being an attractive famous woman isn't much fun because you'll get beaten and raped a lot', there's something a bit queasy about using real life people to tell your story. I'm sure the real woman had a plenty rough time of it, but they've basically shown nothing positive, or even proactive on her part, to make not much of a point about anything. Being famous is shit, that's never been done before.

    Looks nice, though.

Watched The Game last night (late 90s Michael Douglas thriller, ideal) - only to realise 10 mins I'd already seen it, or at least part of it. Skipped forward a bit, didn't recognise the scene, so went back and watched the rest. I had indeed already seen the film in it's entirety but I've no idea how long ago. Enjoyable enough, although I'm not wholly convinced by the ending.

I have been marathoning as many horror films as I can this month, some I have seen before, will review what I can remember that was new for me.

The Hills Have Eyes 2: the sequel to the remake, the remake was pretty good due to it going all in on the gore and body horror. This was a cheap cash in, the budget must have been miniscule. In this one a military unit goes back to secure the titular hills. The concept could have been good but ultimately pretty bland, which is a damning indictment of a film with a token rape scene.

The Bay: Found footage film with a plausible plot, I enjoyed this and thought it was pretty good for what it was. Definitely think it would be marmite though.

The Cleansing Hour: a youtuber cosplaying as a priest perfoming 'exorcisms' gets more than he bargained for. This one took me by surprise, great effects, well written, would recommend.

Countdown: one of those premises it feels like they wrote on the back of a fag packet then just smashed a script out pronto. An app tells you how long you have left to live, if you try and subvert it bad things happen. Runs out of steam quickly and has two comic relief characters instead of one which doesnt help.

X: the most hyped horror recently, a group of people go to film a porno on a farm they are renting lodging at, owned by a decrepit couple. Delivers what it promises, tits and kills that make you cringe. There are some arty shots and the director had lofty ambition for this given a prequel has been made but for me it was just decent, not the next Hereditary or anything.

I'm not sure why we decided to see this at the cinema but it has stuck with me as being comortably the worst film I've ever paid to see.

Waiting for it to arrive on streaming somewhere. Last time I tried to smart view a torrented film to my tv the aspect ratio was annoyingly off and couldn't be fixed.

Some more horror I have watched recently as part of my month of non stop horror.

Speak No Evil is an unconventional horror that really waits until the third act to ramp up, interesting theme though and the end is brutal.

Things Heard and Seen was a shame. After getting over the distracting american accent on the bloke from Grantchester it seemed to be going along at a fair old pace, derivative of classic horror but still interesting. The ending however was an absolute wet fart, really left me and the wife thinking 'what'. I ubderstand why it was done but it wasn't great.

Await Further Instructions was an interesting concept but felt more like a feature length Black Mirror episode without the budget.

The best one I have watched recently is Host. It is set in Lockdown, completely done as a zoom call, it's less than an hour long. But fuck me it works, turn the lights off and feel the anxiety come creeping in.

This might be a thread in its own right if we haven't had it before but is "Die Hard is/isn't a Christmas movie" the most tedious annual Christmas conversation?

I mean if you're having any film that's set at Christmas but doesn't have especially Christmassy themes then Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a better film anyway, so y'know.

I saw that a while back but didn't realise that was still doing the rounds so if it's a new story I guess it might actually be the case. Fuck it, why not. I liked Joker well enough but don't need more of the same so fucking do a musical lads, have at it.
