Made a start on Gears Tactics last night. I've never played a Gears game of any variety but it doesn't feel like 'cubes of muscle and masculinity fight monsters" takes a lot of catching up on and the game seems fun so far. We'll see how I feel about the lack of tactical layer as time goes on but I'm probably getting my fill of that broad sort of thing in CK3 just now so maybe this is a good balance of games to playing at the same time.

I loved Gears Tactics a lot near the start but it quickly got boring and repetitive.

The side quests are seriously shit.

Be thankful you're not playing Necromunda: Underhive Wars. No option to speed through opposition turns and autosaves only.

Anyone here into Hearts of Iron?

I want to get 4 but I wonder how necessary the various dlc is.

I thought we had a Hearts of Iron fan here but a search suggests the only other person who's mentioned is @Byron (in reference to one of the Total Warhammers) and he's definitely not who I was thinking of.

Just coming up to my first side mission now. I'm very much liking it so far and it definitely makes me stop and think in a different way to XCOM because of the difference in how your AP works and turns not ending in the same ways, etc. Basic overwatch before you get levelled up is better than XCOM too.

EDIT: Also I did lol at the classic XCOM/Bioware "limited squad" trope and the in-game justification of it.

"We'll just take two men on this rescue mission against a horde of dickheads who might sprout from the ground in their dozens because a bigger squad would just SLOW US DOWN."

    Would it, though?

The side missions are alright but you're forced into playing so many.

There are a lot of features that I think are great though.

Shame The Reid never signed up. He was very obsessed with this game and could honestly have been a Twitch guru at it.

He’s now moved on to Crusader Kings 3.

The between-missions stuff is a bit clunky and I imagine as you get a lot of gear and characters it'll become a chore but the missions themselves are great so far.

And as you say there's a lot of what they've done that I like. Obviously it's also a nice change from pre-WotC XCOM that the game is basically baiting you into aggression all the time too so you have to weigh that against not getting everybody killed.

Like there's nothing wrong with it but it's not particularly compelling either.

Am well into Wasteland 3 now. I'm new to the series (and kind of sad I didn't do no 2 first but don't think it was on PS4...).

It is fucking great man. A lot like Divinty 2 in that you can basically combine a shitload of different builds, and the setting and writing is pretty awesome. Took me a while to get into all of it but now I kind of feel like I just want it to go on forever.

@Ian have you played? Reckon you'd enjoy this one.

I'm thinking of giving it a try. Comparing it to Divinity 2 makes me wary though, since I didn't really get into that one.

Have you considered just having a better, more correct opinion about Divinity, Pepe?

I bounced off Wasteland 2 after a few hours but this is on Gamepass so I may give it a go.

Comparisons to Divinity are praise indeed.

PC Gamer had Disco Elysium and Divinity: OS 2 as their #1 and 2 games in their latest top 100.

Wasteland 2 has a fun setting and I liked the systems (basic but with enough options for combat etc) but the characters and story are paper thin.

The characters are just endless, you can create as many as you want. At first I thought that was a little sad compared to the depth of the characters in Divinity 2 - but when you get into it you sort of realise you aren't playing as the characters themselves, you are playing as this group of militia called The Rangers and they sort of get their own identity. And when you do sort of accept that, it's quite fun how you can just go back to your HQ and create a new, super-specialized character and have them go with you for as long as you like (eventually I just got attached to some of them). You do meet in-world companions as well - but they can fuck off if they don't like your choices.

At first I was a little overwhelmed by all the character building systems and skills (it's not super intuitive, like my main melee damage dealer goes and punches people with a power gauntlet but has almost no Strenght stat, but high Intelligence and Charisma) but when you get into it it's really fucking fun to create these weird combo builds.

It's mostly the setting and characters around in the game that makes it. Like yesterday when I was playing I stumbled into a decrepit bowling alley littered with christmas lights where a whacky dude in a Santa suit were having Elves (slaves with explosive collars) making a drug called Brain Candy and after that I stumbled upon a bunch of Cannibal Cowboys who invited you to a... barbecue. It's full of that kind of fun Fallout-like shit.

But while we're at it - it does compares nicely and the setting is very different, but Divinity 2 still beats this game for sure.

Into The Breach is one of the most perfect games ever made.

That isn't to say my favourite or the best, but as a little near-puzzle tactics thing I think it's perfect. The rules are clear, it's compelling and while I'd obviously get annoyed at losing fights sometimes it was never unfair.

I should play it some more but I binged it quite a bit when it first came out.

Streets of Rage is on Gamepass I believe. You on PC for it? And if so does it matter what of the various storefronts people have it on or just that they're on the same platform?

The very different Streets of Rogue is also on there.

I have it on PC and for the Switch.

I don't know if there is crossplay between Steam and the Xbox thing, but now I have gamepass, so I could always redownload it there.

I think a lot of games in that genre (online party multiplayer) became popular due to Covid.

Microsoft Flight Simulator isn't all that good. Sure, you can spot some landmarks, but it is mostly generic looking trees and boxy brown buildings all over the place.

Bethesda bought Zenimax, meaning the next Fallout/Elder Scrolls with be a Microsoft exclusive.

Man, I'm tempted by this. Might need to see how it holds up because I loved it at the time. An ending that felt relatively unique at the time and I still want a sequel, damn it.
