Correct. The organisation outside the ground was a total shambles. A friend of mine's husband and son were at the ground 3.5 hours before kick-off and only just got to their seats in time.

Aye, it's probably a bit of both. Let's assume the gates at the Liverpool end were fucked. Would the police allow the Scousers to enter from the Madrid end? Probably not. Either way, there's bother.
The police will have overreacted to whatever was going on, and then that will have caused even more problems. You could see from the standing room in the Liverpool end that loads of people had got in without tickets.
