    Constant figures in our lives

I know some of us are older than others but I'm looking for a list of (famous or notable) people who have been more or less a constant, doing the same thing, for as long as we can remember.

    From sport, I offer:
    Phil Mickelson
    Roy Hodgson
    Ronnie O'Sullivan

I'm not counting somebody who was a player then a manager then a pundit or whatever - I want proper constant figures doing the same job and occupying the same cultural space as they always have, without renewal or change.

    From music:
    Mick Jagger
    Elton John

    TV:
    Martin Tyler
Huw Edwards (I'm sure I was around before him, but I don't remember it)
    Jeremy Paxman (on University Challenge)

There must be loads in soaps or what have you. Fire away. I also want to know at what age the last constant disappears. These are all British obviously but international editions also good.

This thread is sponsored by the memory of Colonel Gaddafi.

Roy Hodgson didn’t even exist in my life before he got the Fulham job or whatever it was.

Really? I remember him from Euro 96 at minimum, and he got the Blackburn job around then so his bumbling presence has always been there for me.

Motson. Dimbleby. Richard bacon. Chris Evans. The queen. Jarvis cocker. The gallaghers. Sting. Rod Stewart. Jennifer Saunders. Joanna lumley. Peggy from eastenders. Phil and grant Mitchell. Hugh Grant.

That’s off the top of my head.

This is the difference that a year or two Of age makes when you’re young. I couldn’t name anyone that wasn’t on the coins you got filling up your petrol at Sainsbury’s or whatever in 96.

I don't think you can have Elton John. He was still seen as a bit of a cunt when we were young, going around kicking off at journalists and what have you, which seems a far cry from his current elder statesman/model homosexual role.

Another for the telly though: Jeremy Clarkson

Yes and I'm saying I think you're wrong. I'm pretty sure you're both the same age (32) /would've been the same school year (last year 2005-06) as me.

Even if that’s true. I’m born literally 3 days before the cut off. I’m the youngest you can possibly be instead of the oldest you can possibly be. It’s a big difference at that age.

I think Jimmy's birthday is in June. Mine is too.

I'm not having a go at you for not remembering things btw. It's fine to forget shit. I can barely remember any of Euro 96 either. Gazza's goal against Scotland is about all I remember and that might just be a fake memory because of constant replays.

Just because we're the same age didn't mean we didn't take in different things at different times. I for example have no memory of the petrol station coins he's on about, even though I'd have seen them too.

    I'm July 88.

I know! I'm not saying you should both have the same memories of childhood. I was just pointing out you're the same age.

TTH has seen it’s fair share of arguments, but having a debate about your own age might be a new one.

    Er, Dario Gradi...

He took over at Crewe one year after I was born ('83) and was manager until 2007, and then 2009-2011, and then Director of Football until 2018 or summit. Left under somewhat of a cloud

Maybe George Hamilton or Ger Canning if I don’t think too hard. Most of the ones that I think back to are dead.

I don't remember any of the shit you guys remember and I'm 2 years older than Jim and Phonocs. My childhood consisted of an alcoholic dad, Mr Blobby, an Iceland Lasagne for Christmas Dinner, a broken boiler, 1 gas canister heater being moved around the house and my mum fighting cancer.

My life started at about 20.

I think we've hit the age now (30+) where those constants are dying off.

Seeing as we are all massive fans of it - Red Dwarf is still a massive constant but like Jeff Stelling, it's noticeable when you dip back in how much older they all are now.

Surprised you forgot Attenborough as well.

I was going to put James Alexander Gordon down as 'bloke who reads the football results' but, in my memory, it's another voice.

Martin Brundle. Behind the wheel, on the grid and behind the mic my whole life.

He said people 'doing the same thing, for as long as we can remember... doing the same job and occupying the same cultural space as they always have, without renewal or change'. Jarvis Cocker? Grant Mitchell has spent about six months in Eastenders this millennium.

The best bet for football is Sam Allardyce. Next season will be twenty years since he brought Bolton up, and he has lived the 'Big Sam' gimmick every day since. Players probably 'Zlatan' for similar reasons.

I can't remember a time before Mike Dean was refereeing, but apparently his Premier League bow was only in 2000.

There is only ever really room for one celebrity referee, and he ultimately lost out to Howard Webb in that post-Mike Riley upheaval. Then Mark Clattenburg usurped the order of succession, which was when he suddenly started being a bit theatrical. I'm not sure he counts.

My old man was taught PE by Dario Gradi at grammar school in the 60s, and every time in my life that a Crewe result has been read out on classified results he has always said 'A win/loss/draw for Dodgy Dario'. You can imagine his lolling when he got found out about 50 years later.

I feel like David Ellaray is still your original and best alpha male of the refereeing community. Uriah Rennie is your nearly-man. Made a play for it at one point and had cultural significance on his side, but ultimately just wasn't very good. You're right too, they're like Highlander's. There can only be one.

David Elleray had an actual job/professional background as well, which was fine in a league still sponsored by a brewery but he was probably retired as part of the Barclays re-brand.
