Fucking mental stuff. Everybody knew that Truss was thick at best and utterly incompetent at worst and yet they voted for her in every ballot and the final vote. Why?

She only 'won' IIRC when it came to the final ballot, which was member driven and I think can be explained by her being the whitest remaining candidate.

Not to defend tories but I think that's harsh. The people who drive the Conservative agenda wanted the tax cuts she promised and had spent the month prior using Mail/Express front pages to shit on Sunak every day it was between him and her. I mean look at this, they're even blaming him for the fallout from Truss

'Economic stability' is the new 'growth'. 'Lowest unemployment since 1974' is the new 'we brought in the energy cap'. Such a fucking trainwreck.

Caught up with today's absolutely bizarre scenes and what I'd love to know is what was the catalyst for all this? How has she gone from being adamant this was the right thing to do a matter of days ago to ripping the whole thing up, giving the keys to no.10 to Jeremy Hunt and going into hiding, before finally coming out tonight to apologise?

One could say she realised it was a mistake, but if you're able to realise that, how in the fuck did it take (relatively) so long to do so?

Presumably, she thought it would all blow over. Then the BoE had to throw another wedge of cash at Government Bonds to stop us becoming Greece in 2008 and everyone else realised it wouldn't blow over, so the knives came out.

Since then they've been trying to undo all the shit she's been up to, whilst trying to make it look like it's all her doing. Working hard behind the scenes to fix all of Kwasi's mistakes. That idiot.

The plan is probably to leave her as PM, because they can't stomach any more shambles, but for her to basically be the Queen. In charge, but not actually in charge at all. "Sit down, shut up. If you have to speak just smile, nod and say "I was decisive" without crying"".

The problem is not that Truss is useless but that evidently her advisors are also useless. Historically they've always been the most switched on but yesterday's damage limitation shambles (not to mention the entire last seven weeks) shows that even the unelected faceless people that actually devise policy have also jumped the shark now.

Because she has absolutely zero political acumen (an underrated trait to have) and has basically fallen into the gig by accident after 3 previous Tory administrations have drained all the talent and serious people from this generation of the party's ranks.

You cannot (ever) start a ministry by blowing up the national revenue with no corresponding reforms already in place.

Jeremy Hunt looks like he's struggling to contain a giggle in many of these interviews he's been giving.

Be well funny if he puts all junior doctors on the minimum wage or something when he does his mini-mini-budget-statement thing at the end of the month. "I've solved the NHS funding problem!".

That election map up the page even makes it look like she might lose her own seat. If ever there was something to make me vote Labour that is it.

If she manages to lose one of the safest Tory seats in the whole of the country that really would be her greatest political achievement.

She fancies a crack at the leadership from the right of the right. Completely insane, as not even the Tory membership are pig-headed enough to do that again.

As we've seen with other parties over the years, insulting sections of the population not a great way to gather votes.

PMQs is always a joke. Occasionally under Boris it was good to watch because Starmer would get him all riled up and he would blurt out something off piste.

It's a complete protein that can be piss easy to prepare and eat with basically any meal or just as a lil #snack. I see no reason to have beef/pork/chicken over it as a "vehicle" in a lot of cases. I'm not even veggie any more and I eat about a block a day.

A place near me that does this life changing deep fried Szechuan tofu dish. Kenji does some good stuff on it if you're curious.

Also apparently Brady has told Truss she's already breached the traditional threshold of number of letters required for a no confidence vote (15%, which is 54 MPs, but there's reports that number is over 100). However, it's not a written rule that the vote must be called immediately, so he's waiting until they reach 50%.

I've just noticed they're holding a vote tonight on an opposition motion to lifting the ban on fracking. Guaranteed anyone who goes against or even abstains will have the whip removed so it'll be interesting to see who actually has the balls to do so as a protest against Truss. It'll only take about 20-30 to go against the whip for the motion to pass and essentially result in Labour being Government for the day, so it's highly likely they'll all fall in line and brand it a "confidence vote in Truss" so abstentions could be in the offing and really test the Chief Whip, who so far looks as useless as Truss herself.

Why the party right are so unbelievably keen on fracking (I remember hearing 'Lord Frost' incongruously tubthumping for it on the radio last year when energy wasn't even a topic) is a mystery to me, especially because it hands the Nimby Party (LDs) easy ammunition in a lot of Tory seats.

    Onshore wind now ffs.

Presumably they're being funded by people keen on being allowed to frack.

Isn't onshore wind likely to lose them the support of NIMBYs too?

Onshore wind is hugely popular: https://www.theguardian.com/environm...r-poll-reveals

I presume it's some kind of lobbying and/or corruption that makes them want to frack.

The BBC has seen a message sent to Tory MPs - telling them: "This is a confidence motion in the government."

A number of Conservative MPs oppose fracking, but they have been told they must support the government or face being expelled from the parliamentary party.

Ms Truss's press secretary has said the prime minister would not resign even if the government loses Wednesday's vote on fracking.

That is because Labour's motion does not amount to a formal vote of no confidence in the government.
Well, which is it? [I know it can be both but come on].

I think it's just so they could remove the whip from any rebels and therefore their confidence letters wouldn't count (a pointless tactic also used in his death throes by B.Johnson).
