Probably around the centre, but out where I live(d) they would just pick up the big communal bins. Nowhere I knew of had it's own bin

The office at work has been whizzed around and among the new things is a radio. Slightly annoying when I'm trying to work but that's not the main issue. The main issue is that it's 10.16am and I've already heard Maria Carey's fucking shit Christmas song twice. Why the fuck can't they play anything good? That song is fucking dogshit.

Whatever station the accountant plays here is on a full blown Oasis buzz this morning. Champagne Supernova is the 5th in a row.

Absolute Radio has no repeats between 9am and 5pm and plays a decent variety of stuff that should appease all. Problem being is if you have it on every day, you soon notice it's just the same set of songs on shuffle, but in a different order tomorrow.

We've a radio in our place and it sounds like Jim is being subjected to the hellish Capital or Signal 1.

We ended up having a voted on radio rota. Different station every day of the week.

I think it's on Heart or some similar purveyor of 2000s hits, interspersed with the blandest Christmas classics (already had 2x War Is Over as well).

Home for the first time in a while and went to ADSA so I could pig out on shit I haven’t seen in forever. What the fuck happened to boost bars? Bought a pack of them and they were tiny.

I heard from a bloke at work that the industry's reeling from a cocoa after the Chinese got really into chocolate.

It's the government sugar targets bullshit. Companies can't 'reformulate' their products without ruining them, so they just make them smaller.

Most other things haven't shrunk and increased in price at the same rate as chocolate over the years (at least not until very recently), so obviously sweets are where the real margins are. There was meant to be an updated report published last year, but I can't find it, so have a read of the government report on case studies (appendix four). Under Mondelez, which owns Cadbury, who make the Boost bars in question:

Portion size reduction of seven multipack bars sold in discounters, independent and high street stores was completed, products ranged from 25.6g to 54.4g before, compared with 20g to 40g after reduction. The portion size of two multipack bars sold in grocery channels was also reduced, ranging from 38g to 54.4g before, compared with 32g to 47g after reduction... Prior to the 2015 baseline, as part of the chocolate industry's commitment to ensuring all single serve chocolate confectionery products are under 250kcal/serving, Cadbury Bar and a Half products were delisted.

I'm sure they're happy to squeeze a bit more money out of things, but they're not just making them smaller off their own bat.

Isn't that because they just charge the same for the now smaller bar? That doesn't alter [or provide] the reasoning for the shrinkage in itself.

I once saw on Secret Eaters where a woman poured one bag into another before taking the well-stocked bag into the living room to eat. At the time I was like lol fat knack or what, but everytime I have a bag of crisps, I wish I’d done it.

It's either profiteering or it's maintaining a profit margin in the face of rising costs, depends on your approach to business.

They've probably found that people prefer product shrinkage to price rises.

I'll happily pay £1 for a real size Snickers over 60p for the modern day version that would pass for a Mini that you'd get in party bags as a kid.

It's not as if you can only profiteer by shrinking your product. There will be all sorts going into these decisions, profiteering included.

Costs are always rising. Even if the ingredients stayed at the same level (which they probably don't), fuel and labour are basically always going up, but the price people are willing to pay for their chocolate will rise much more slowly.

Nestle, if you're reading this, my wage demands are very reasonable. I just need a full villain-style lair in the Swiss mountains on top.

Why are people so willing to defend corporations. They’re not your friends.

“Five years ago a regular packet was 35g — 1g more than today — and cost 42p. Squares — also made by Walkers — have risen from 42p to 55p while the bags have dropped from 35g to 27.5g.”

The price has gone up. The amount of stuff in the bag has dropped. It’s profiteering. Simple as.

‘They’re not profiteering they’re simply adjusting to rising costs’

    *Shows proof they are*

‘Doesn’t matter. Cut out the crisps then fatty’

    The conservative mindset in action.

If 'profiteering' is attempting to make a profit on the goods then yes, they're profiteering.

I don't think anyone has said that price hasn't gone up or that the serving hasn't shrunk, so I'm not too sure what you think this proves?

The same change in price and serving could also be in response to increased cost of production and distribution.

To prove that this is "profiteering. Simple as" you would have to show that their profit margins mirror the cost cut of shrinkage and the price increases. Which it obviously won't. Because nothing is that simple.

It wouldn't surprise me if they've managed to nab some extra profit along the way, but if you were to check (which I won't) I imagine they're largely tracking inflation. Just spreading it between shrinkage and price increases.

10 minutes ago you were saying the brave corporations were trying to do all they could in the face of rising costs. As soon as that’s disproven you’ve decided to pose the argument as ‘any profit is evil’

It’s pathetic. Just say ‘I was wrong’ it’s not that hard.

I already mentioned that their profits have increased earlier in the thread. In that time they also relocated to Switzerland for massive tax breaks. It’s just real life. Corporations aren’t your friends and sucking them off is such a weird way of looking at the world.

And proved that it's related to this in particular? Not expanding into new markets? Rolling out new products, etc?
