Not sure why I hadn't got round to it before but Leaving Las Vegas was very good and has aged well, not least because of some great music.

Christ, Oppenheimer is turgid. Save yourself the 3 hours and read his Wiki whilst being blasted with Hans Zimmer at an uncomfortable volume.

The social media plebs getting in trouble with Japan for using the bomb emoji in a jovial manner is quite funny.

Did you not get tired of that Lonely Teardrops song by the end though?

It is indeed very good, probably my favourite Nicolas Cage film. Although I’ve not seen them all cos I’m not a mad man.

I watched Guardians of the Galaxy 3 last night. I am a fan of the first 2 but feel like this was a swing and a miss. Wife felt the same yet social media reliably informs me it is the best film ever

I enjoyed the Dr Strange film with the kid as it was basically a horror movie aimed at whatever age audience Marvel movies are aimed at, but the rest of phase 4 that I've seen has been borderline atrocious. There was some shit in Phase 1 to 3 but they're plumbing new depths now.

It stands to reason that all of the best characters/stories were used up in the first big Avengers phase, so now you're left with space/'multiverse' wank or treading water until you can re-boot Iron Man as black.

Watched The Flash with the Mrs the other day. Given the absolute mess surrounding the film and Ezra Miller, it actually came out better than I expected.

Time travel is often misused in film and I don't think they've gone over the top with it. The CGI though, yikes. Could have done with a few more months in the oven.

Lowering the tone slightly I watched two films yesterday.

Gritty suburban UK revenge thriller. The things we do real well. Neil Maskell returns to his hometown after ten years to seek revenge on former 'friends' who destroyed his life.

Maskell is fucking insanely good in this. Compelling and terrifying as the unhinged lead. He's always been great as that middle aged, teetering on the edge kinda role (Kill List) but this is something else.

The director's previous work, London to Brighton, was outstanding. Relentlessly bleak, but Paul Andrew Williams excels at these low budget slice of scum Britain pieces.

Incredibly graphic in parts, brutal. Nobody in this is a good person. Proper shades of Dead Man's Shoes at time, although nothing is in that level in the genre, nor will it ever be.

Let down somewhat by an ending which I didn't mind but could see a fair few not going along with, but if you can ignore that last five, it's a fucking great ride. Top film
This is great entertainment but I don't think the ending added anything.

Watched Oppenheimer last night and just don't get the fuss. If it were shorter, it might have been a bit more engaging, but at 3 hrs it was bang average.

Last department conference we had there was a quiz and I absolutely annihilated the film round much to the quizmaster's chagrin. He can fuck off though as he once told me my answer of 'Boney M' in the music round when he played their version of Mary's Boy Child, was wrong.

Just watched TMNT Mutant Mayhem and it was great. So funny, honestly hilarious. I probably enjoyed it more than the latest Spiderverse film. Splinter and Donatello being the standouts.

Watched the Luther film today, started to feel like it was completely overblown nonsense but then I remembered that scene from the TV show where Luther saw the killer crouching on CCTV and instantly knew he was rolling dice to decide the fate of his victims so really it was in keeping with the usual. It did go a bit mad when they're driving the Volvo to a mansion in the North Pole without putting so much as a bobble hat on though.

Where it did excel was the top flight wig on the bad guy, ooh la la

Probably my favourite film to come out of Asia. Endless rewatchability, outstanding performances, tense and fucked up. Still incredible.

    Accused (2023, Netflix)

Holy fuck thats good. Young lad on the train home to see his parents is mistaken for a terrorist bomber after a bomb goes off at the train station he was at. Similar clothes to the bomber.

Social media goes on one, finds him, finds his address and...yeah. Actual terrifying look at the consequences of speculation. Great film, tough watch.

I just watched the trailer for this and my first reaction was "why did he not immediately call the police"?

He does. Its mentioned in the film that he is way out in the sticks, with his parents, and police take forever to respond.

I watched Pee-wee's Big Adventure earlier cos it was mentioned on a podcast I listen to and I knew my daughter would find it funny. It went down a treat.

It's pretty much a long episode of the old Twin Peaks, only not quite as dark. I loved it.

Dunno if the second one, Big Top Pee-wee, is any good though?

Watched three good films last week:

    Grace Of My Heart (1996)
Sweet comedy-drama (very) loosely based on the life of Carole King. I only became aware of it because of Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis bizarrely having a cameo role in it, then found out it was actually something of a cult favourite. It's never extremely exciting or funny, but it's very watchable and pleasant. Vaguely a mix between A Star Is Born and High Fidelity. 7.5/10

    Dallas Buyers Club (2013
I tend to agree with the critics that the movie's quality pretty much rests on the performances of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, and if they weren't in it then it wouldn't be very good, but they are and it is. My only complaint is one I often have with hollywood movies about a protagonist's journey from being a dickhead to not being a dickhead, where there isn't enough in between, and they basically jump from twat to loveable rogue between scenes, but that would need another 30 mins and I hate long films so whatever. 8/10

    Paper Moon (1973)
Best of the three, it's just really great. Black and white road-movie set in depression era America, with a travelling con man and a girl who may or may not be his daughter who go around scamming people and stuff. It's awesome. 9/10
