I’m officially out for the season.

Weirdly I’m not even upset about it. Maybe my time is done.

Is that still the injury from last year?

At least you have all summer to get on the beers and do some scoring or umpiring, you can be the next Jimmy.

Yeah the first operation didn’t really do much. Need a second, bigger, one if I’m ever going to play again.

I think I’ll commit myself to putting money behind the bar rather than umpiring.

What are they saying you need doing?

I got clearance to start playing football again last week, just shy of 10 months from the op.

Cartilage replacement. Basically I have none on the outer half of my knee.

It's got a good success rate but it's not a sure thing and recovery is 6-9 months. I've got an appointment next month to get the ball rolling on it.

We did outdoor nets last night. Makes the heart sing. Especially as I've been retired for years so my main role is to criticise others.

What do they replace it with? Do they take it from another part of the body?

They take it from another part (less load bearing area) of the same knee as far as I’m aware.

Insane opening game for us – would have been the absolute perfect start but we came up one wicket short on a completely dead pitch. Leachy bowling a casual 65 overs.

That pitch is ridiculous for early April. There's two rounds each in June and July this year, what's it going to be like then?

Surely some 14 year old smashing a 38 ball century in the IPL somewhat calls into question the legitimacy of the format?

    Sorry, 35 ball.

I wrote it off as fake cricket years ago. I barely even bother with the World Cup.

I've found it so hard to watch any kind of pro cricket this winter, partly because the offerings have been shite but also because the whole atmosphere around it is more venal and dominated by Indian bollocks every year.

I was therefore a bit worried about the start of the spring and the season here - had I lost the bug? Been out there for three games and the answer is firmly no I haven't, absolutely loving it. Club cricket is simply a better sport than pro cricket now, I think - if anything, the stakes are higher for clubbies because the games all really mean something and it isn't just a payday.

This might be true of all sport very soon, I think, despite the apparent indestructability of attendances at men's first team Saturday pro football.

On the point of football, all the local level 7-10 teams around here are absolutely thriving attendance wise.

Dom Bess opening the batting for Yorkshire. Rehan doing the same for Leicestershire. County Cricket is either doomed or better than its ever been (for wacky entertainment)

First day of the league season today, it's better than Christmas.

Played back-to-back friendlies for the 1s last weekend and felt the burn/stiffness all week long. Was given the ball for a few overs too and didn't disgrace myself so that was nice.

Bit gutted to have Cam Herring (https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricket...herring-518173) dropped off my bowling - that would have been a nice scalp to take.

I stood at the Oval today. The actual cricket was nothing to write home about at all, but it was pretty cool. The umpires' room has autographed walls of all the people who've done internationals there. Seeing 'Joel Wilson' scrawled on the wall several times doesn't fill you with pre match confidence.

We also did the thing that David Steele did in 1975 of going down one flight of stairs too many to get to the middle, and ending up in the kitchens. That was fun.

    Very cool, congrats Jimmy.

What tier of umpiring is considered 'professional' in cricket? As in "quit the day job and updated your LinkedIn status" level of professional.
    Is it domestic competition/internationals only?

Not about cricket but I feel the same way generally about football. Love playing but find the professional game less likeable every week. Well done on being the new David Shepherd.

Professional would be doing it for a living. We have a guy in our league who is a NZ professional (contracted by NZC to stand in first class etc) and he comes over here for practice in the other half of the year.

There is a sort of grey area level (the highest I could realistically get to) where you do very high level stuff mostly in midweek but barely get paid for it, I don't know how anyone does that with a job/career but apparently they do.

I get paid £63 a game which is a leave the house at 9.30 and get home at 8 job most of the time, so suffice to say we're not doing it for the money.

I see Baz Gallance has been bought in as a ‘batting consultant’ isn’t he a thunder cunt? Plus also potentially racist?

Ignore me he’s doing it for Zimbabwe. Makes more sense now.
