My hottest and worst take is that modern parents love their children too much. Now this is a second order concern when set against the dog problem in this regard, but it's starting to become clear to me. Back in the day a bit of mild neglect balanced things out a bit.

This is why you end up with people bankrupting themselves at Christmas and GP surgeries filled up with nothing.

I see the tour is set to come to Britain in 2027, yay. Britain though, so bound to be some provincial disaster zone rather than the south east where all the wanker cyclists are, sad times. Also lol at the guy getting mugged for his 4 grand bike in Regents Park by some moped punks. Obviously no solidarity amongst the lycra clad crowd, I mean, where was the 30mph guy that wipes out old ladies when you need him?

Also, ITV4 and Eurosport losing the rights to TNT pretty much puts the whole thing in the bin. Sad.

Eurosport didn't lose the rights to TNT. Discovery own TNT and Eurosport so the channel no longer exists.

Yeah, yeah, whatever, it going behind the TNT sub paywall is adios from me, which is a shame.

It should be put on the protected list in respect for the ITV4 coverage since forever alone.

Oh I assumed it was on the protected list so they'd have to give out a youtube stream like the CL final.

I watched a video or read a piece about the Tour De France production and it was fascinating. Bores me to tears but my Dad (who also likes Cricket) loves it.

Not to take an instantly contrary position, but if the the tour is or was actually on the protected list we'd probably have to shut up shop as a country. I was more paying respect to ITV4 for largely making the thing a thing. Much like cricket, particularly overseas cricket, it will now go back to not being a thing.

As I said I find the whole thing insanely boring. I thought it always partly took place in the UK, mostly fueled by the fact that it went past my house when I was 6.

It is insanely dull for the most part, it's about the rolling countryside, the chateaux, the idle chit chat in the background to make the day roll by a little faster.

How did it come about I wonder, I remember watching it in the late 90's when it was still on Channel 4 but it seemed an odd fit then. No-one else really cared until Sir Bradley Wiggins invented cycling in 2008, was there a huge clamour from British audiences for more of Sean Yates or David Millar or was it some dire need for stuff to fill digital channels with?

Full day coverage started on ITV4 pre-Wiggins I think. Mostly filling the day time schedule with cheap shite I would imagine. Literally no one gave a fuck about it.

    2002 apparently.

Same reason for Golf and cricket. It’s nice to look at and good background noise.

Like those channels at Christmas that just show a log fire.

It was highlights for years before that though, for the seven of us who cared to watch. I suppose it was something quirky for C4 to show that nobody else gave a shit about and was therefore cheap as frites.

I really like cycling, but the Tour is only good for maybe 5, 6 stages. The rest is background, like niko said. Some races I can watch the full 4+ hours and actually be entertained.

Having just been on a nostalgic trip back through late 90's cycling I found this gem on the wiki page for Djamolidine Abdoujaparov:

In his last complete tour in 1996, Abdoujaparov achieved a mountain breakaway for his last stage win, unusual for a sprinter.
In 96 probably not that unusual actually, and he's done well to make it to 61 without his heart exploding.

I definitely must be missing something with cycling as a spectator sport, I just can't see what people are watching. People complain about NASCAR's going around in circles but cycling is just people going in what's like an infinite straight line.

There is a tactical element that you can start to enjoy the more you watch it although for long parts, it is just cycle very fast through an area.

It's like watching the London marathon, but with more tan lines and Eurochat.

I used to love the team names. Can still rattle them off from 'my' era, no doubt it's all Team Saudi and whatever now. Cofidis, Euskaltel-Euskadi, AG2R, Agritubel, Françaises des Jeux, Davitomon-Lotto, Rabobank. Who were the Belgian lot with Tom Boonen. Quickstep? Might be the same as one of the above.

    More goings on in Germany.

I rather fear that these events and events elsewhere leave Mrs Merkel's legacy somewhat in tatters.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Maybe it was an AfD nut.

Really putting Gateshead on the map.

If there is a discrepancy a staff member will do a manual rescan of the whole trolley.
    That'll go great.

Don't really see how those things cut jobs anyway, beyond being part of the self-scan thing, as they'll still need to approve you buying a pack a paracetamol or whatever.

Is that how they are going to replace rescans? Seems a catastrophically unlikely to succeed plan - how are the scales going to be accurate enough, down to the gram, when you are potentially loading 30 kilos of shit on there? How would they know you have scanned 10 packs of Flaked almonds [100g/£1.65] but put in 10 packs of pine nuts [100g/£3.90] into your trolley? Same weight dipshits, £22.50 of value to Antony Worrall Thompson.

I mean, they already have. When I worked at Tesco they'd have 20 odd tills open. They introduced 8 self scans (manned by 1 staff member) and cut that down to 10. These days there's maybe 2 tills open, if you're lucky. 3 staff members manning the 16 odd self scans.

This is obviously an attempt to cut staff further and I can only hope it's as devastating a failure as you think it will be.

You have to remember that in companies like Tesco, there are probably 35 people in head office whose job it is to identify cost savings.

Ironically it's their jobs which should be cut. CEOs are far too obsessed with costs and nowhere near interested enough in opportunities.

No, they already existed and it takes far less people for far less hours. My wife used to do it. It's a maximum of 12 hours a week and it's only a team of 10.

They must be on some fair tight deadlines because they'd mow you down if you're not watching out for them.

Yeah, they normally work before the store opens, but when busy they continue after opening. Their "pick speed" target remains the same regardless, which is why they'd sooner mow Brenda down than stop and tell her where the crumpets are.

I've noticed there are far more active shelf stackers than there used to be, basically every aisle has one going full time in the shops I go to. Presumably they've cut the overnight shifts doing that.

Tesco's staff numbers and share price have been pretty stable over the past 12 years. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that doesn't immediately scream of a big shift towards automation or massive price gouging.

Has anyone been to Uniqlo or elsewhere where you just drop your basket into the thing and it automatically scans everything? My mind was blown. Presumably less feasible at Tesco though.

Decathlon do that, although I find their tills are pretty bad at getting the prices right, often making errors significantly in their favour if something has some sort of special price.
