Having only watched a 30 second trailer, I feel like everyone saying Better Man is good must all be in on a joke that I'm not aware of.

Yeah, I'm not having some Robbie Williams biopic as told through the medium of a musical theatre planet of the apes is going to be anything other than dreadful.
Robbie Williams is a grade A cunt.
What happened the other 17 letters that's on the end of that these days?
I meant the "calm down Yev" bit.
I've no issue with LGBTQ being a category of film.
Nosferatu tonight, then PlayTime in 70mm tomorrow.![]()
I'm going to see Nosferatu on Saturday, I think. I was supposed to go last night but ultimately couldn't be arsed.
I did however, on New Years Eve, watch the Francis Ford Coppola version of Dracula to get in the mood for it. Which I had never seen before. What a wild film. I (mostly) loved it though.
Everyone involved, at least at face value, seems to be having a right old time making it. I feel like they just gave up on trying to get Keanu do the English accent about half way through, he just ultimately gradually reverts to a sort of slightly-well-spoken version of Ted "Theodore" Logan at some point in the third act.
I also, weirdly, bought the Jacques Tati boxset literally yesterday, it's on its way to me. I've never seen PlayTime or any of his other works and am looking forward to diving in.
I went to the local indie place this evening & watched Grand Theft Hamlet. It’s a documentary, not a film, but I watched it at a cinema & I can’t be arsed to find the documentary thread so it’s going in here.
It’s about two actors who decided to do a full performance of Hamlet inside GTA Online while they were locked in during COVID. Obviously there’s a decent amount of people getting blown up & beaten to death in the process, but as much as it’s about the process of them putting together the play it’s also about two guys just trying to get through the pandemic. Gets quite dark & personal in a couple of places, but it’s balanced out with all the typical chaos of a GTA Online lobby & two slightly posh white blokes trying to convince a bunch of absurdly dressed, homicidal strangers to recite some Shakespeare. Definitely worth a watch if you can find it somewhere.
Nosferatu is peak Eggers aesthetic. Odd choices elsewhere let the film down imo.
I really enjoyed Nosferatu.
Heard someone complaining "there was no story" when I was leaving the cinema. Stupid cunt must have fallen asleep or something.
Nosferatu didn't really do it for me, unfortunately. To clarify it's by no means a bad film. But I would be hard pressed to describe it as anything other than "decent" and I think it's easily Eggers weakest release.
There were some really strong aspects of it. It was beautifully framed and had a few really memorable shots. The bits in Orloks castle and the atmosphere they created there was great (they didn't spend anywhere near long enough there) and Willem Defoe was (as ever) very good.
Aside from that it just fell a bit flat for me. It just felt a bit soulless, or something. I can't really put my finger on it. I think the depiction of Orlok himself was very cartoonish and it took me out of it quite a lot. I feel like there was a fair bit of sub-par acting in it too. Aaron Taylor-Johnson in particular was really not very good. I don't know, it just didn't live up to expectations for me.
I thought Nosferatu was good, but not amazing. Agreed that Willem Defoe is excellent as always, and it definitely looks like an Eggers, but there’s something stopping it from fully living up to expectations.
Also just seen We Live In Time, which was great, and unsurprisingly produced a steady supply of tears.
I loved Conclave. Full of great people and dry af.
Any of you doubters watched Better Man yet?
I watched I Saw The TV Glow the other night. It got quite a lot of hype online but I thought it was shit.
It’s not some wild opinion but I’m not sure in the more than 15-20 times I’ve done it that I haven’t considered my existence for 10 minutes after watching La Haine. Truly the greatest movie of all time.
Don't let Vinz intrude on your inner Hubert.
I'm the police, obvs.
A Real Pain is pretty good with Kieran Culkin stealing the show.
Funny and emotional but I did feel like it was missing something.
Watched The Straight Story.
Hopefully Lynch is in purgatory. Absolute shite.
September 5 2024 1080p SCREENER WEB-DL X264 COLLECTiVE
Nickel Boys 2024 1080p SCREENER WEB-DL X264 COLLECTiVE
Both out. Screeners are back baby.
I was just thinking about screeners the other day! This time of year used to be amazing for them.
Went for the weekly trip to the cinema & since The Brutalist is too long for me to actually be able to get the train home after & we’ve seen basically everything else we settled on Presence.
Knew nothing about it other than the very limited info on the Cineworld site, but I’m glad we picked it as I actually really enjoyed it. I’d assumed it was a horror movie but despite the supernatural theme it’s not a horror at all.
It’s got a very A Ghost Story vibe conceptually, which works for me as I usually get on with the slightly non-standard stuff, the plot was solid enough for a movie that’s only about 80mins long so can’t really do too much, and they did a good job with the cast too.

Companion will probably be up next, then I need to figure out when I can actually get the time to catch The Brutalist.
Oh, and I also finally managed to catch Conclave, which was definitely worth digging around for.
I'm lukewarm on Anora outside of Mikey Madison shaking her ass, so I chalk up the Oscar's sweep to a career achievement for Baker, because the three previous ones should have netted him at least one if not two awards already.
Margaret Qualley's arse was robbed.
TIcked off Rebel Ridge over the weekend. Can't help but think it would have worked better as a TV show.
I haven't seen Anoura yet but the trailer looked wank.
I was stunned when it was nominated let alone won big at the Oscars.
At this point the whole thing has jumped the shark. It's the art wank-fest it used to be twixt with woke.
Couldn't have been that woke. The trans film just got a couple.
Yes but the trans film was tanked by the titular trans lead actor's never ending toxic tweet history coming to light.
I haven't seen Anora yet but I've seen quite a few of the other best film nominees and they were all very good. Even Emilia Perez which I expected to be shit. It was a strong year.
Better Man was still my favourite film of the year though.
That De Niro film where he talks to himself looks shite.![]()
Better Man is good, but no more than that. The stuff with his Dad, Mum and Nan is very engaging and heartfelt, but the chimp in the crowd and addiction stuff ultimately gets tedious quite quickly.
Black Bag was good, however is it just "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" for Zoomers?
The Hunger Games prequel is a bit shit. Starts off promising but the character change in Snow is way to quick. Makes it seem all a bit odd.
Mickey 17 is pretty fun.
I noticed Gunner was being promoted by Amazon with a 3.2 IMDB rating. That’s being kind. So, so laughably bad. The CGI and random music made it come across as a high school film project
Can't remember whether I posted this at the time, but a high school film project was exactly how I felt when watching the last Alien movie (Resurrection, was it?). Absolute shite on every level.
Forgot to mention the clip art subtitles they have for the Asians (who were speaking English lol)
@Yevrah - site wide freeleech on PtP, fill ya drive with as many 1990s obscure romcoms as your heart desires.
