The birth defect rate is 57% which, yeah, in isolation sounds bad, but you know, better than not having been born at all! Also, I don't think it is, it's just double the normal presumably pretty low rate but whatever.

    What a nut.

I believe in an age of consent.

Every viewing gets better. The way the room is set up, he must have actively chosen to have the teddy visible over his left shoulder?

Is this the thin end of the trans wedge end game Lewis was getting at?

In the realm of justifying crime I do have some sympathy with this viewpoint.

The part where one bloke is arguing that the disabled are a burden on the state and the other counters that homosexuals are a burden on the state was peak GB News. People call lots of things Nazi but those are both as close to actually being Nazi as anything I've heard in recent times.

His aesthetic is so specifically 1978-82 it's honestly quite impressive. Dennis Nilsen, Geoffrey Howe, Mike Read, the Iranian Embassy siege, they're all inside his heart.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czr368m1j8lo

Major Adams, who led the 6888th Central Postal Directory Batallion, is played by actress Kerry Washington.

"Everybody thought it was impossible, what they were up against," she told the BBC.

"And I think that's why the film resonates with people.

"Not just, you know, these particular black women and this time and place, but anybody who'd ever felt under estimated, or doubted, or pushed aside or marginalised."
They were sorting letters. It's not exactly trying to hold the bridge at Arnhem. These people have brain disease.

There doesn't appear to be a transport or infrastructure thread, so it's going here.

After an 11(ELEVEN) year delay, HCMC Metro finally opened it's first line yesterday. 3 stations underground and about 8 or 9 overground heading out east of the city. Another 7 line planned, which based on the first line, will be finished circa. 2140.

11 years would be a win here. The Dublin Metro was proposed in 2001, given planning permission in 2011, and a sod hasn't been turned yet.

Original cost €3bn, current estimate €23bn

    Slight budget overrun, that

This first line original budget was $1.2bn, final cost was $1.7bn, although widely expected that number is fudged.. more likely $3bn-$4bn

Meanwhile the Northumberland line is BACK. Operates as a pseudo-extension of the Tyne and Wear Metro. And the first of the new Sadler 555's are in service. The Gateshead flyover looks fucked, though. It's got concrete like rotten teeth.

What's most maddening is that you - much like us - could get rid of most of that extra €20 billion simply by sacking the thousands of governmental employees and middle managers that exist just to make things difficult.

I was talking to a couple of quantity surveyors from my company who have been working on HS2 and the mishandling of funds is incredible. It's no surprise given the way this country does things but if any of the specifics hit the media then the scandals coming from it will bury people.

You'd think a huge public project would be one of the most difficult environments for a QS, but no, it's quite the opposite. There's just a complete lack of accountability and you don't need to be a cynic to think that's by design.

In Greece at the moment and the recently opened Thessaloniki metro is the word on everyone's lips. Late, over budget and ultimately shite. This wouldn't happen in a proper country they say.

The twats making things difficult and wasting money exist because of specific laws that act as a drag on all construction everywhere (e.g. the 'bat tunnel' fiasco), but the main reason for costs spiralling has been the plan to have half of it underground to not upset a few MPs whose constituencies line the route, meaning that most of the initial (lol) leg will be underground for no practical reason. Imagine trying to build the M25 now.

I'm fighting back against my bat expert eco report after it's no evidence of bats and low/negligible suitability for bats led to a recommendation of further surveys next summer.

    Erm, please gtfo.

Also have to demolish in a way that is sensitive to badgers. What the fuck does that mean? Should I put up polite notices for them?

Their own guidance says they mustn't default to more and more surveys as it brings 'the profession' [arf] into disrepute. Chancing twats.

Ecological surveys, biodiversity net gain, sustainability reports, water neutrality, winter groundwater run-off surveys, unfortunately the lunatics have taken over the asylum. I'm just trying to replace an existing 50s shit-tip with a modern house. Christ knows what it would be like if I was trying to build actual new houses. No wonder they have to get the land for basically nothing to make it even halfway viable.

I ran into the bat laws when the broom and I had rats, in that one pest control man refused to put poison down in the loft for fear of bats being there. A right pain in the arse.

They are protected, and anything protected causes huge problems. Newts, water voles, some types of rare snail, badgers but not the ones with TB. Not people. Not foxes, not sure who they've offended. Not sure if the protected designation stemmed from EU regulation originally. If it did sadly no bats have been implicated in the deaths of powerful peoples' beloved animals or they might be off the list now, like the European Wolves.

I don't personally think it is a bad thing, it's just, as with all these things, the sledgehammer doesn't really crack the nut and if anything probably makes things worse as people take harmful measures to 'avoid' the problem.

There was a good thread on Twitter about the bats. In short, in the course of proving how endangered the bats were and how the railway needed to make allowances for them, they found far, far more of them than expected. The result was that they updated the threat level to the bats to reflect this, and then the railway had to make all the same allowances regardless.
