There was no real physical evidence of this, it's really hard to detect after the fact. Some babies had skin discolourations which are "one of the signs" of an air embolism according to some paper from 1989. The science is really wooly, and seems to be a hypothesis rather than knowledge.

Here's some interesting reading about it: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgwx9xprwqo

The Letby case is potentially seriously problematic. Not solely because she might be innocent but due to the way it’s been handled - I’ve no reason to believe she isn’t guilty and I’d prefer to go with the verdict of the people who sat through the whole trial in the absence of anything damming to the contrary, but this gets us nearer to the problem with the whole thing.

Once again ‘the public’ were told early doors stop reading fringe shit and get back in your box, she’s bang to rights. To the extent that a New Yorker article (iirc) was banned by British ISP’s and I had to vpn it to read the damn thing. Which just fuels the conspiracy click bait that far too many people are obsessed with and fast forward a few weeks/months and what’s this? Oh, it’s the BBC posting articles with both sides of the argument.

If she is subsequently acquitted it’ll be a massive ‘I told you so’ for those fucks who bang on about legacy media lying to us and there’ll be another x million people on the train.

Now I wouldn’t care about this so much but I’d quite like to retire in 12-14 years and I could really do without Western Civilisation voluntarily eating itself within that time.

You could be retiring next year and I'd give you evens at best Yev. Go retire in Thailand like a king. Everyone will think you're a nonce, but you can't knock the value for money.

When my inlaws went to Vietnam they saw a dead body get fished out of the stream that runs behind the hotel. They slapped him in the back of a van and drove off. Problem solved. Other than that all they had to say was that it was as sticky as Satan's armpit. They haven't been back.

Oh I don’t doubt there’d be many people that would hate it. I’d guess a corpse being fished out of a river is a rare occurrence and they were probably more perturbed by the heat. I’d have no problem with the latter and little with the former. As you said in your first response, Western money in non-Western countries (be that Asia or South America) just strikes me as a total no brainier.

£1m in the pension pot is the target, take the 25% tax free lump and live off that while the pot builds back up to £1m then I’d be able to clear £3k per month ish in post tax drawings which would mean an obscenely good lifestyle.

Plus I’d still have a house in England if it turns out I don’t like it, that can also add to the income if I do.

Granted on all fronts, but I think there's several better options than Vietnam. Apparently Argentina ranks pretty well on the affordability front, whilst also having decent weather (depending where you go) and being alot more similar to our way of life.

Alternatively, you can get citizenship on many Caribbean islands just by having £100k in the bank.

I'd leave the overpopulated sweatbox's for people retiring on a shoestring.

In other retirement news, can someone give me a quick explainer on what the WASPI outrage is about? As far as I can tell, all they did was bring the retirement age of women inline with men, no? Equality, in other words?

I don’t want to assume that this is just middle class women of a certain age, middle-class-women-of-a-certain-ageing, as our m8 Gggreggg might say, but I'm not sure I understand the outrage otherwise.

Some women planned to retire on X date and the government didn't give them enough warning/a bespoke public information campaign telling them that the rules had changed and that was no longer possible/viable for them and so they had to retire on Y date a bit later and it was a MASSIVE INJUSTICE.

I can see why that might be a little annoying, but my mate Yev has a million in his backburner and he's having to move to a shack in a landmine creator to make it work. Where's his justice?

In the same way that it is a little bit annoying when the government puts up tax rates. Not sure it gives you grounds for official grievance.

Anything does these days. Worship at the altar of the self.

I don’t doubt there’ll be some form of rug pulling in the run up to THE PLAN coming to fruition, but I was very relieved with Labour not doing it in the last budget. As for the Women’s, it’s clear by this point that Katie Hopkins line was right, in that they’re not after equality but all of the good things they think men have without any of the shit.

Genuinely you don't have to take the 25% as a lump sum. You can crystalise the pension at the £1 million and take the first 25% tax free so you could take for example £3k per month out of the pot whilst leaving it to grow for the future and meaning the capital isn't smashed by withdrawing 25% of it out of the pot. That way most likely your returns would cover your monthly outgoings comfortably and your pot would still continue to grow.

Have you been paying a lot into pensions for a while or have you ramped up more recently as you become more aware of getting older? At what age do you envisage hitting the million?

At the moment I'm on track for £700k come retirement. But my primary plan is mortgage-free before 55. Once that plan is further along and I'm comfortable with its progress, I'm aiming for a £2k per month retirement ASAP.

The benefit of that plan is all going to depend on your tax position but you could possibly think about ISA’s tax hit initially but tax-free income in retirement is a big bonus.

I’ve been dogshit at it for years but with my bit and the employer side now I’m aiming to whack in £60k a year for the next 12 to 14 years to hit the million. I’m at about >£100k now, with most of that coming in the last 12 months.

Oh and due to the personal allowance unwind it’s an absolute no brainer to do it, that much I have managed to work out. £4K a month means I get something like £1,700 a month take home less.
