I always find it interesting that managers do well with similar sized clubs but when they step up to clubs with higher expectation levels, it doesn't work.
Nuno Espirito Santo did so well at Wolves and now doing the same at Forest. Couldn't do much at Spurs but then again, who does?
Roy Hodgson did well at Fulham but couldn't do it at Liverpool.
Graham Potter at Brighton and couldn't do it at Chelsea.
Sam Allardyce at Bolton then flopped at Newcastle.
Moyes at Everton and Wet Sham, then Man United.
Stick to what you're good at. Creating an us against the world mentality as underdogs.
I think managing top, top, top players is quite different to managing merely good ones. The egos on these people, especially nowadays, is such that for Mbappe or Bellingham they genuinely think they are bigger than the team, which isn't necessarily the case for Chris Wood.
Ancelotti is the grand master of that kind of management. Mourinho is terrible at it which is partly why the elite game has rather left him behind.

Ashworth probably knew that Southgate would be far more successful in this kind of vipers' nest dressing room, but that kind of appointment doesn't justify the many big upstairs paycheques nor does it pacify the legions of customers/fans eager for their fourth straight flavour of the month disaster, so it was never going to happen.
