Darwin Nunez likely to get a lengthy ban for his involvement in this crowd fight with Uruguay.

Probably improves Liverpool's chances in the upcoming season unfortunately.

They need a change regardless, it's a very different scenario now compared to when he started, and a different approach is required. I'd put Potter in quite happily.

Can't see Gareth being able to raise himself for Nations League B anyhow.

I would be odds against on the next guy doing a "better job" than Gaz. But yeah time for a change. I don't think they'll get Potter.

There's not many managers that can reliably do a good job internationally to be honest. At best you're looking for somewhat more attractive football.

As in you don't think they'll choose Potter, or he will turn the job down?

Howe, Potter and Pochettino are listed as the 'succession plan' by most sources. Howe is so FA it's not true.

    Potter would be tragic.

May as well just carry on down the good vibes chancer route and stick Carsley in. It's not like any actual coaching ever gets done.

If England can get him, great, but I suspect he would turn it down. He seems quite fussy and I'm not sure he'd be willing to work under the constraints. Surely not Poch for various reasons and I think Howe would be a downgrade.

Carrick's stock is rising but he seems a bit too autistic to me, and probably a year or two early. U21 watchers do seem to rate Carsley. Ange? Gary O'Neill?

    Two more years.

Something in me would love to see Southgate try to Tournament Football his way through a 48 team World Cup.

'Gareth, you drew 0-0 with Uzbekistan in Des Moines, and squeaked past Curaçao with a 97th minute own goal. Do you not accept that Kieran Trippier has lost his pace?'

'Listen, Harvey, there are no easy games at this level. We're top of Group N and we're through to the next round.'

What did Nunez do? From the story it sounds like that thing was it Eric Dier did a few years ago. Did he manage to lamp anyone? I thought I'd heard he got a bit of a king hit himself.

If there’s no one to replace him then yes we would miss him. But no I don’t think so he does a lot of stuff well but there’s so many times you look at him and he’s actively harming attacks.

Oh well, we had a good run. Absolutely no chance we're winning a final in all white. Fucking Lionesses bullshit.

Find me an important game that England Men's Soccer have won in all white.

I thought all white was frowned upon in the ladies game as being a misogynist imposition?

Are Spain at least going red shirt/blue shorts or are they going to be a block colour nightmare as well?

If you have your period in white shorts then it's the patriarchy oppressing you, if you have the shits then it's eternal meme time, them's the breaks.

Reading some reviews and listening some pods reviewing the Netherlands game. The revisionism is staggering. "Top 10 semi final wins", "superb".

The first half was good, not out of this world, but decent. The second half was absolute bilge. The media 180 has been interesting to observe, and akin to DPRK propaganda.

It's Southgate's Machievellian genius. He's got them wrapped around his finger in a way no England manager probably ever has (or who knows, maybe Alf Ramsey was a master of mind games too).

    Best performance ever.

Yeah, it needed the dodgiest of dodgy penalties to get us back into it during the best half of football ever played which we were losing, and a last minute winner, but as long as Spain roll out a similarly sub-Championship standard midfield and have equivalent levels of composure if they get into some of the attacking positions the Dutch got into it'll be fine.

Whilst most of the neutral European fans surveyed by the beeb seem to have our number the seethe if we scab our way to it is going to be glorious.

Hopefully it's pre-2008 shit-the-bed Spain that turn up.

I think we either brush past them 1/2-0 and wonder what all the fuss was about, or they do a right number on us and score three. Tough to call.

It’s amazing how those comments are almost exactly the same as those said in England that created the “unusual atmosphere”.

Gaslighting Gareth must be upset reading that.

Stodgy draws against Slovakia and Denmark, a last minute equaliser against Slovenia when we were minutes from second round elimination. Needed pens against the Swiss. 2 decent halves of football in 6 games.

If we win, great - but this idea that the fans are being harsh, or that England have grown into it is just weird.

They've been shit, and Southgate subs and tactics have been largely demonstrably crap.

    That said, come on England!!!

As for the performance against the Dutch…, With no context we were good in the first half, poor in the second and scored an amazing winner.

Taken in the context of the absolute horror shows that had gone before we were very good in the first half, passable in the second and scored an amazing winner.

Any take more positive than that is deluded.

I don't know much about Alf Ramsey but wasn't he a similarly disliked anti-football type - didn't pick Jimmy Greaves, didn't play with wingers as was the style of the time etc?

Actually, bar the winner the best thing by a mile in that semi was Southgate. He behaved and did things like an actual manager.

Edit: Again, taken in the context of what had gone before.
