I voted against jez but chucked it in the bin voting green. I'm back this afternoon in the UK for Annihilation Thursday.

I voted Labour. Moderate measures for a sensible Britain. Plus the candidate was listed as living in Ealing so clearly doesn't care, a plus point in my book.

My seat is a Labour/SNP coin flip so I voted Labour, natch.

I've done it before (and Lib Dem) but only in locals. GE record was previously Tory all the way. Lib Dems will piss my seat, ending 120 years of the Tories holding it, but the Lib Dems are just awful people so there we are.

I took no great pleasure in it.

I don't know where to check, but I'm pretty sure mine has been a Tory safe seat since the plebs got the vote.

I wouldn't be surprised if it stayed Tory, either. The Yoof are out voting this morning, so Labour probably have a handy lead right now, but the mobility scooters are charging and the blue rinse brigade will start their assault after Bargain Hunt.

Both the Southend seats are going red, if they don't then it'll be the sign of the lol scenario mentioned above in which Labour wins but is massively deflated by the small size of their win.

What sort of time do the results start coming in? The nonces up in Sunderland (or whereverthefuck) that like to "win" are normally around 11, aren't they?

Exit poll then go to bed.

Nothing meaningful happens until too early o'clock in the morning. There's some rivalry isn't there up there with speed counting, but I guess it is easier when you are only ever really counting votes for one party.

Sunderland South at 11.30ish is the first one, then the first meaningful one will be Basildon and Billericay (or something like that) at midnight-ish, if the Tories lose that it's goodnight Vienna, if they hold it then it may be a slightly better night for them and 'only' 200 losses.

North East are quicker at counting as they have insanely high postal vote %s.

    Sounds dodgy. Tower Hamlets style.

I'd missed Rishi outing himself as a 'big sandwich guy'. Ah, what a campaign it's been. Presumably he didn't actually mean big sandwiches, or maybe he did, in the sense that everything is big in relation to him.

He must be so demob happy. Just a few more embarrassing interviews in the next 24 hours and then he's free to eat big sandwiches and check the Saints score for the rest of his life.

I changed some the ham and cheese triangle sandwich to the ham and cheese soft baguette as part of my Sainsbury's meal deal and I think it's improved my life 3-4%, that's how good sandwiches are.

It's the best one by far.

I don't like shop wraps. They're too cold and dense. It reminds me of hotel board room catering.

I got a BLT from the Co-op a couple of weeks ago and it's gone down as one of lifes great disappointments. The fillings were only in the middle, leaving an inch wide ring of plain, dry brown bread. Never again.

Is voter ID a new thing for you guys? In Sweden it's a given, and it always amazed me that in the States it by and large is not a thing, and when it is implemented it's seen as disenfranchisement. How do people not have personal identification documents at the ready...?

It was brought in since the last general election (2019) and was harshly criticised by the political left for being a right-wing voter suppression tactic. In general we are very different to most of Europe in this regard, we don't have ID cards, most people don't carry such things around routinely, when Tony Blair wanted to introduce ID cards 20 years ago there was a massive privacy backlash and he had to withdraw the policy.

Came in since 2023 I believe. The issue here is that we don't have a standard national ID card as it was resisted a while back, so if you need to produce ID that means a driving licence or passport, both of which cost money and there's a chance you may go through life never using either.

We've had photo ID requirements in NI for as long as I've been voting so it wasn't even all of the UK that didn't require it. I did find it weird not needing it when I voted in England.
