How does this even work in that narrow field? I know people who are very clearly autistic in the modern sense [most also now have autistic children], but because autism simply didn't exist 30 years ago they weren't and have somehow been able to function and behave in society. Most were just statto types, but have adjusted into reasonably 'normal' people. How did they learn those 'skills'? Doesn't your theory necessitate thinking that no one can be taught to behave, either you innately know how to do it, or you don't? Seems like the number of people who can be categorically not taught communication or social interaction skills, to some extent, must be vanishingly small and not at all congruent with the group 'people who have autism'.

There's three categorisations. Go educate yourself.

I feel like the fact that we’ve all hung around here so long puts every single one of us somewhere on the spectrum.

Do we need noise cancelling headphones at the cinema, a blanket to fidget with on plane journeys, and special seating arrangements in restaurants? Of course not.

Could we socialise with a stranger if stuck in a lift for an hour? I reckon so.

If you get your mega drive taken off you for drawing on the wall, would we destroy the house? Doubtful.

    *Obviously not in every case.
This is one of those things where I don't know how to explain it, but you do just know when you have a reasonable amount of experience interacting with lots of non-autistic and lots of autistic kids.

What Magic says it true, it is the fact they have very limited ability to learn or improve in these regards. Non-autistic children will pick much of this stuff up just by virtue of interacting with other people, even with useless parenting.

Yeah but you only think that because you have a poor understanding of what autism actually is.

Some relatively able children with autism (usually girls for whatever reason) essentially learn to mimic the behaviour of others to fit in, but they don't really understand the behaviour.

    From the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria:

Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.
I.e. if the limitations are not significant enough to cause functional impairment in life, then it doesn't meet the bar for an autism diagnosis.

I'm not sure what I think about the pros and cons of smacking, but I was absolutely fucked up by overly permissive parenting. Ten years ago I would have written angry essays on here explaining why you should treat kids like adults, give them plenty of freedom and just try to teach them fairly loose, abstract notions of right and wrong. Absolutely fucking not. It might work for some, but I'm pretty sure it was an absolutely disastrous decision by my rents, and didn't play an insignificant role in me being a total fuck up. Obviously it's mostly on me and my terrible decision making, but I do think structure and discipline is very important.

I would say that smacking is completely dying out, which is no bad thing, but then I probably have less insight into the matter now as a parent than I did as a kid, where you get to see/know if your mates got a hiding off their dad, which they often did. I would say that that rarely happens now.

I had loads of structure and discipline and now think I possibly should have had a bit more freedom. So it works both ways.

I got lightly smacked, only by my mum. I presume some dads were giving it the belt and so on in the same era.

My mates were right little shits, probably ADHD by today's standards, and their dad used to give them the belt and the slipper. They used to coat their hands in vaseline to negate the impact

I don't understand how you would make this error. Surely you're checking the board and whatnot to get the right flight?!

Staff not paying attention properly because their job is dull and they don't want to be there, understandably.

On the other hand, you have these divs, who are there by choice and have one job - to get on the right plane. If you manage to get on the wrong one, you are at fault.

During one of my many airport runs in the last year or so I was thinking about this - what would it take for one to actually get on the wrong plane. I thought of all the ways you could get confused and it could go to shit, but then I thought surely even then it's impossible because you have to scan your boarding card at the point when you actually go through the departure gate, and you would be picked up then.

    Clearly I was wrong.

Yeah that’s slipped through a lot of nets somehow. I can’t imagine anyone arguing the airport/staff were more at fault than the idiots who ended up in Lithuania by accident, mind.

It seems more like it was the special assistance folks' mistake than theirs, tbf. If you've got special assistance and they take you right to the plane, you'd expect them to take you to the right plane and probably not pay that much attention to it yourself.

They should really have noticed when the captain makes an announcement before departure though.

Such a weird take. In what world is it appropriate for a police officer to needlessly run over an animal?

Even in you ignore how despicable it is to do that to an animal, they also showed no regard for damaging the car.

It isn't appropriate but it's something we should all get over in 10 minutes and he should have a talking to from his sergeant, not be a major news story.

Actually, you've convinced me, I think on packets of supermarket mince they should write the name of the cow it came from.

Honestly, there's something almost impressively evil about having servants on like 50p/hour when you're worth literally tens of billions. I mean it's one thing when mega corporations do it to thousands of employees, but when it's literally the people doing your cleaning and stuff, awesome. Legends.
