A year or so ago a Geezer originally from Newcastle (I presume) died. I know this because his funeral procession went past our office. They had his coffin strapped onto the back of a flat-bed, draped in a "HOWAY THE LADS" Newcastle flag with a "BIG JOHN" flower arrangement. All the following cars were decorated in various colours and the people walking with the procession were dressed up like they were heading to Notting Hill Carnival afterwards.
Now, I don't know what the funeral invites said, but if they said "wear whatever colour you want", it sure as shit didn't mean suit.
