If you look back at the time before squad numbers, 6 was almost always a centre half.
The modern trope of referring to roles as numbers is bollocks.

Chelsea's transfer activity is very reminiscent of the first summer of Abramovich, when they just went out and bought all sorts, so it'll be interesting to see which of these does a Mutu.
It’s not quite as exciting this time because it’s not really a novelty nowadays and it’s halfway through the season, but it’s still fun.
I'm a twit

Gordon official.
Just then man we need to replace Woods' 3 goals a season.
Such an odd signing.
I've just checked a Sky Sports compilation to see just what he does. The answer seems to be taking credit for deflected goals. Roams about across the midfield so I guess he's got that going for him and he's alright at set-pieces.
Baffling. Top work from the agent though.
He's a manager's player. Bit like Joelinton.
He's not out of place in that squad, to be fair. A couple of gems in amongst a fairly workmanlike midfield with Gordon probably settling in the latter camp.
Realistically what is he going to do except increase his bank balance. Presumably the toon keep it tight enough to stay in the top 4 and then the likes of Gordon are fired into the sun whilst top european talent is acquired.
He's just the latest Mason Mount or Oliver Skipp. Except he was at a shit team and didn't want to fight. If he wasn't English nobody would give a fuck and he'd be playing Championship football next year.
Either that, or I am missing something major and so, it appears, is everyone else.
Shelvey's reportedly on his way to Forest.
Cancelo to Bayern on loan.
Bizarre.
In Arsenal related news I have little to no interest in this Caceido deal while Arsenal twitter is busy melting down saying not doing it means we've lost the title.
I would be interested to know what happened behind the scenes with him and Pep. All of a sudden he was dispensable. He was dropped (sorry, rotated) before he lost form so it was clearly off-field related.
Banging his daughter.
Dias and Silva in the mud too. Pep's husband clearly ran off with a Portugeezer.
Taz will be delighted with Palace's latest signing.
Pep never seems to hold players hostage. If they want to leave, he allows them to leave.
Stick him on a 8 year contract and jobs a good un
He’s Mendes’ mouthpiece so that’s probably that transfer saga over
Dyche is in.
Arsenal would be better off breaking the bank for Rice at this point but can't see West Ham selling.
Rice will leave in the summer. Not a chance West Ham let him run his contract down
Cancelo to Bayern reeks of financial chicanery. City becoming part of the scam Juve (oh look, his former club) and Bayern have had going for years.
I think Brighton and Benfica will tell both tell their guys to shut the fuck up and enjoy the bench for a few weeks.
I wouldn't sell now out of principal. They'll get just as much money for both in the summer.
Everton bidding £45m for Gallagher and there's me thinking they were broke. Mon Dyche
Chelsea would be stupid to turn that down. Especially with the fact FFP is a shambles and allows you to be in pure profit from homegrown sales. Use it to finalise Enzo and run.
Sounds like they've properly triggered his release clause now.
Don’t think so. They’ve placed a bud worth the same amount but don’t want to pay it in full. The fact they’re entertaining offers for Gallagher would make me think they’re confident of getting it done though.
I suppose it will depend how much up front there is in it. I suspect a deal isn't too far off.
We've surprisingly managed to offload Diego Llorente (who is fucking useless) to Roma, of all places. I mean it's only a loan with an option to buy. If they've any sense they will never be activating that option to buy. I'm just surprised it's got even this far.
One could argue this leaves us slightly short at CB. But I'm not too concerned given would rather stick a Leeds shirt on a shop mannequin and prop it up at the edge of our penalty area than see him bumbling around back there again, it would be less of a liability.
Obviously he will go to look a very competent player at Roma now, no doubt. Some sort of Smalling-esque renaissance.
I can't recall if he came with a massive reputation too but I deffo recall a "ah man our defence desperately needs Llorente back fit" period probably after a handful of his first few games when he could carry that 'composed cultured CB' tag without people cottoning onto the fact he can't defend.
He always had that Djimi Traore/Biscan downy look about his face so you just knew you weren't gonna get a proper defender out of him. CBs need to look like mean cavemen. Still don't understand how Thiago Silva didn't get found out in brexitball.
Nail on the head. I probably said exactly that myself on more than one occasion. He pretty much managed to make it through his entire first season with his reputation in tact because these were the good times when we were smash-and-grabbing the shit out of everyone and nobody knew what to do with us.
Second season onwards after teams started to get a handle on us, stem the flow of goals we scored and actual defending became a very necessary commodity it became evident he was useless. It's not just that he's bad at the back, it's that he destabilises everyone else too. It's just fucking chaos all around him when he's on the pitch.
Ten senior caps for Spain, somehow.
Arsenal after Jorginho lol.
Maybe Chelsea will bid.
Hopefully they bid for Harry Souttar.
Isco to Union Berlin. One for the hipsters.
Word is Connor Gallagher has told Everton he's not interested.
Awkward when he gets to training tomorrow and his locker belongs to E. Fernandez.
I would actually give him a run just now and give Mason Mount a holiday in, well, wherever Mason Mount goes on holiday. I'm going to say Dubai.
Not sure CG is going to be much more than he currently is, so will end up elsewhere, unless he fancies doing a Darren Fletcher role and just hanging around a winning side with Mental Strength and Pedigree for years.
