The way it's being reported is as if Newcastle are obligated to take Ronaldo if they do qualify, which cannot be even close to true.
If you're owned by the Saudis, you're owned by the Saudis. Not sure 'Newcastle' as a distinct entity would have any say in the matter.

It's (as the yanks would say) a 'team-friendly' deal as it gives the club financial leverage over most/all of his prime years as a footballer, whether that means playing for Chelsea, or, if he's good, not being able to run off to Real Madrid on the cheap. The only downside will be if he turns out to be bobbins and we're stuck with his contract forever. You're also potentially disincentivising the player to try hard, as Winston Bogarde showed.
