Has it ever been cold enough in our lives for a lake to freeze hard enough to hold the weight of somebody, let alone several people? What were they doing?

Judging off the attire and hairstyles of 'the public' in that article's photo, I suspect if they weren't out playing on that lake they'd be smoking spice. Almost certainly gone to a better place.

This froze up last time it was really cold in Manchester (and i lived there) and was strong enough to hold people. (Well I saw people walking on it like idiots and no one died)

I think I'd heard of this policy before, but it really makes me feel uncomfortable.

If your goal is to reduce smoking then that's hardly a problem.

I've long said that's the perfect way to do it, even when I was smoking. There's no desire to ever stop smoking in most countries though because it's such a money maker in the short term.

It's pathetic. If they want to ban it - which they should - then just fucking ban it.

I considered not posting this, as I know it's insensitive, but why the fuck is a 6 year old out playing on a lake unsupervised? It just completely baffles me. Presumably they thought he'd be alright because the 10 year old is there, which seems to be a common train of thought for retarded parents who can't be arsed to actually do any parenting.

100% agree. Kids do not analyse risk at the best of times. Whilst we can't protect them from every scenario, this situation seems mad given their young ages.

    Absolutely tragic.

It's probably easy to cast judgement given what happened, and it probably is a case of somewhat poor parenting, but, at the same time, there could be salient facts that such judgment overlooks or ignores. Kids who live on housing estates or next to parks or whatever (I don't know the geographical details of this lake) should be able to play in those areas without needing constant supervision (and probably do without incident 99.9% of the time), even young ones if they are with older children. Letting your kids go out and play in the snow, maybe whilst you are 'working from home' shouldn't simply default to a judgment of neglect when something terrible happens. This is obviously a freak accident and the best way to respond to it should be compassion and sympathy, not by seeking to apportion blame.

Depends on the maturity of the child. But 6 is ridiculous.

If said older sibling is also not mature enough to realise that they shouldn't be playing on a frozen lake themselves, yes.

It's impossible to define an age because kids are completely different. Some 10 year olds would possibly be sensible enough to stop them, others would happily put their siblings in a cannon and fire to see how far they can shoot them.

Clearly, in this case, said 10 year old was not old/mature enough.

Every situation has different context but I’m not really sure 6 years old is ridiculous. You’re telling me you wouldn’t allow a 6 year old to go out and play with his older sibling without you being there? Poor kids

You don't have a 6 year old and it shows.

As Spikey said, it depends on the specific child, 6 is never the correct answer. The idea of a 10 year old being capable of "supervising" is ludicrous.

So if you lived in an estate and one of your kids was 10 and the other 6, you wouldn’t allow them to go to the park to play on the swings without you being there?

I'm sure 6 year olds would have roamed free back in the day. Probably all died in horrible accidents, but based on my old man's childhood anecdotes there's no way he wasn't being let out by that age.

I think I was being let out alone by about 9.

You shouldn't be letting your kids out on the estates until they've got themselves a place in univeristy and a way out of the gammon life.

I would have been out and about at 6 straight after school with every other dosser who lived in my area without the need of a parent being there to stand over. Maybe a look out the window every now and then. Buses to Dundee in P7 so that would be aged 10.

Not at 6, no. I think you are grossly over estimating the maturity and awareness of most 6 year olds.

Wouldn't be surprised. Dennis Nilsen, Ian Brady, Peter Tobin, all the Scotch nonces come down here. They must like the challenge good parenting offers.

Google says his youngest was 14. Which is the average age of single mums in Scotland, so yeah, fair enough.

I think I'd let a six year old out with older children if it was relatively close to the house. I think it's a bit easy to call the parents out when something freaky happens.

I tried to remember at what age I was allowed out (either by myself or with my big bro).

It then occured to me that the cannot remember a single thing before the age of 12 or 13. Is that normal?

Nah, I remember loads from about 4, with a few memories before that. My earliest is being in one of those doorframe swings. Must have been like 1/2 I guess.

I don't remember doing that much in detail but I spent a lot of my childhood wagging school (actually hated primary school and changed when I was in my second last year), playing on my mega drive, and playing cricket, football in the street in front of the house.

Rumours abound that Princess Bajrakitiyabha, daughter of the wacky King of Thailand, has died. "They" want to keep it secret until the new year... not quite sure how you keep a secret nowadays, but there we are.
