Edit: you know what it's probably not that relevant and I'm falling into a bit of an "accepted knowledge" trap. Doctors love IV antibiotics because it makes us feel like we're doing something MORE when in most circumstances orals are probably just as good.
Antibiotics technically start working straight away, but usually it's at least 24-48 hours before you see a significant clinical effect.
Antibiotics are particularly bad at treating appendicitis as well, although the fashion on that does seem to be changing somewhat.
I imagine you will also have been being given some decent analgesia, SvN which will have been responsible for part of the effect.
I tried to discharge myself after being in hospital for 12 hours with appendicitis because it didn't hurt much any more so I thought it couldn't actually be appendicitis, and I wasn't even on antibiotics until post-op
