July: The end of the Euros and.... friendlies?

Baz has rightly reminded me how calendars so it's time for a new thread, which I suppose gives us one more chance to con some mugs into saying they thinking it's COMING HOME in a poll before England go out to the Danes on penalties, eh?

And after that the miserable, barren wasteland of pre-season and the RL arguing with people in the transfer thread.

And because I haven't posted it even once yet:

Presumably a very sad Mbappe if he's had to end up choosing Liverpool over somewhere nice.

I suppose the squillions of quid would make up for it.

Let's be honest, England's probably joint third-favourites with the Danes. Italy look great, almost unstoppable. Spain winning would involve some chaos in both boxes. It's tight, though. Every team has something about them. I genuinely see these Italians as a fantastic tournament side.

Not sure the Danes have a semo upset in them so it's up to the big boys to bring the joy in the final.

Are there any big screen places in London for the final?

Yeah, they looked knackered at the end of yesterday’s game. England are pissing it as the Italians will lose to Spain

Here's a rundown of the Olympic tournament.

    Group A
    Japan
    South Africa
    Mexico
    France

    Group B
    New Zealand
    South Korea
    Honduras
    Romania

    Group C
    Egypt
    Spain
    Argentina
    Australia

    Group D
    Brazil
    Germany
    Ivory Coast
    Saudi Arabia

All gets underway on the 21st. As usual, it's an U21 tournament with some allowances for overage players. Straight forward format with the top 2 from each group going into the quarters. The women's tournament below has no such restrictions.

    Group E
    Japan
    Canada
    Great Britain!?
    Chile

    Group F
    China
    Brazil
    Zambia
    Netherlands

    Group G
    Sweden
    United States
    Australia
    New Zealand

Top two go through and the two best third-placed lot.

Apart from being played off the pitch by Austria.

Losing their leftback also potentially bad for them.

England with the easier semi and home advantage are the clear favourites (by dint of being less likely to be eliminated in the semis than either Italy or Spain). Doesn't mean they're going to win it, but let's be realistic.

Italy v England would be a good final. England's all out defence against Italy's high octane attacking. Welcome to backwardsland.

Yeah, sure. Played off the park. Let's just ignore Italy's 27 shots.

Perhaps, relative to what was expected.

Couple of super marginal offsides bailed them out. Not really bothered by how many shots they had. Austria had 16 which seems like a lot as well.

England had 10 shots last night. 6 on target. Same number as Italy managed from their 27.

Got to say that I'm coming across far too many people with otherwise no interest in 'the football' making plans for Sunday.

In a way it's helping me come to terms with semi-final heartbreak maybe being the ideal ceiling for England. Nightmare scenario is final heartbreak, worst of all worlds right there.

There should be a ten question quiz at the door to let people in. 6/10 qualifies for entry. 8/10 if you want a more intimate night among connoisseurs.

Q1. Who or what is a 'merking'?
Q2. Former Leyton Orient manager John Sitton once encouraged one of his players to bring his fucking what?
Q3. Which of these is a former Swansea footballer? a. Paul Dawdle b. Lee Trundle c. Craig Saunter
Q4. Premier League referee Bobby Madley lost his job after allegedly fellating what animal?

    etc.

I'm nervous about tomorrow night, which I haven't been even remotely for England's previous games. None of the sides England have faced so far have a) been any good b) had momentum c) radiated good vibes, and Denmark tick all of those boxes.

I think I'll be more confident about them winning the final than I am about them getting there.

This is a more apposite time to do so, although I'm not sold on the pessimism.

I've also come to the realisation in the last day or so that whilst hurt probably isn't the right term, I've had 30 (well 31) years of disappointment watching England, since the 1990 World Cup, which matches up well with, and was probably the real intention behind that particular lyric. So yeah, it's definitely on the cards.

I don't understand being nervous, it's not like you're playing. I would like them to win, as I would any England match, but my interest stops about five seconds after the whistle and win or lose it's on with the rest of your evening.

I'm more interested in who the scapegoat is going to be if it goes wrong although I can't see England ever having a better chance of finally winning something. It's shit but warming in equal measures, I guess.

England are at home in a full stadium, which will be all England fans, no? Against a team they have better players than, in every single position, except for Goalkeeper.

The manager also has the players completely on side and behind him. If you are a pessimist now, you always will be.

I’d have fancied Denmark in the last 16 or quarters but they looked knackered at the end of the last game and England will freshen it up again tomorrow no doubt. Squad depth in the attacking areas and midfield is ridiculously good.

I am a basically non-partisan when it comes to club football, but I do understand fandom as a concept and there's something different about international tournaments. It's quite nice actually.

I'm not going to cry or batter anyone if they lose but winning a tournament would feel like quite a big thing.
