They have outbreak information at their disposal as well. The weekly flu / respiratory reports from PHE (or whatever they're called now) detail origins of outbreaks. It's like they've gone beyond track and trace and now would prefer to see one number go so high as to diminish all others by comparison.

There are always going to be people who argue that those who have children should look after them and those that argue society has a duty of care for children who aren't provided for, regardless of the reason. I think it would be wise to consider, regardless of political stripe, that leaving kids to fend for themselves if their parents are feckless is likely to have negative consequences for society in general further down the line. It is probably easy to quantify the costs to other services as a knock on effect which might be easier for the government to swallow.
In the grand scheme of things though when we have been spunking vast fortunes on absolute bollocks recently it should have been an easy win for them, but I agree with Jimmy they're all too insulated with their own bullshit.
