I never understood America at all until a few years ago I did a spate of reading about the civil war, and suddenly it all falls into place, literally everything about the country springs from 1860-65, much in the way that pretty much everything in England springs from the industrial revolution.
An entire network of states were willing to put their young men up for slaughter in order to preserve the racially based slave economy, you don't come back from that in a mere 200 years.
