To contain the virus. Not sure it's stopped everywhere or for everything, but Jimmy's ball bearings aren't the only thing in short supply.

It’s basically worldwide and spreading like wildfire due to travel anyway so why cripple the m economies because of it too? In 2020 it was never going to be stopped.

The whole approach has been massively dumb. If they'd temporarily closed borders and locked down cities at the start we might have had a chance to stop it, but that horse has bolted so like you I don't see the point now.

Indeed, in the modern age the idea of PANDEMIC FLU being of the same gravity of such things of the past seems a bit off. I saw some authoritative bod being interviewed for some Chatham House thing about this and I really hope the fact that he was sitting with the island of Madagascar just over his shoulder was a conscious decision by someone.

I always wonder if the control measures are more about trying to gain some knowledge about it. It spreads like a motherfucker so they need to understand just how it operates.

The Chinese seem to have got a handle on it during the last 3-4 days, and if they can then I think we can. Sub-Saharan Africa, not so sure.

    Current Infected: 83,387
    Current Deaths: 2,859
    Infected but recovered: 36,630

The number of daily cases in China is slowing down, however, cases around the world are now increasing.
S.Korea with 2,022 cases and 13 deaths, the next largest being Italy with 665 and 17 deaths.

Here in Vietnam, still no new cases for 2 weeks. Schools still on complete lockdown, and most people staying at home. All sports also cancelled.

Italy's death toll is a little concerning. Unless they're all 100 years old due to the olive oil.

I read one article saying "most deaths are those over 80". However, it seems impossible to find the actual average age of the deaths in Italy.

South Korea's death rate seems to be way lower than the other countries with 100+ cases. I know how these goons operate and their reporting will be at the absolute cutting edge. In Italy half the mild cases won't even have reported. They can't even drive by the rules; they're not going to turn themselves in and end up in quarantine when there are women to be chased.

The cruise ship is a nice controlled environment full of old people and their rate is half a percent.

I've been suprised by how not serious everyone seems to think this is. It's still a new virus that is killing 2-4% of everybody it infects... and is speading at quite a fast speed (about 1000 new cases per day).
Yes, we know flu is similar - but we know what flu is - this is a new virus going around killing people.

2-4%? We're having 1-2% reported over here, most of which are old and vulnerable people that would be finished off by the flu and - actually - ARE being killed off at a faster rate by the Flu.

It's not a nice bug, you'd want to avoid it, but for most people it's not a real problem.

It's clearly a problem but I think shutting everything down for six months and completely tanking the world economy will not help anything.

I don't think they are being killed off at a faster rate by actual flu. Does standard flu kill 15% of people over 80?

And I don't understand the "for most people" line, it strikes me as a bit moronic. I know you're not the only one using it, so I don't mean to pick on you, but there are loads of things that for "most people" would never be a problem even if we did nothing to mitigate against them happening, it doesn't mean we shouldn't. Terrorism for one example.

I do agree the current efforts to tank the global economy are very disproportionate though and if they were needed, should have been done at the start of the outbreak and not now.

I mean if it's mainly geriatrics who die from it I'd say just let it run it's course and cull a few of them.

It will if they don't decide to ban all travel, close school systems while parents are still having to work, lock entire office buildings in quarantine if someone sneezes, or as Switzerland has done, ban gatherings of over 1,000 people.

If the Chinese had done this on day one in Wuhan it may have worked, but they were too busy being a fascist one party state.

I think most of the QUARANTINE efforts are just looking like they're doing something. You can't shut the whole country down (which they would do if something like smallpox was working its way around), but if they just said look it's basically a shitter version of flu, look after yourself and get some crisps in like Lewis did, everyone would be blaming the government.

Isn't the quarantine efforts just a way of halting the spread so that healthcare services aren't completely overwhelmed by a spike, affecting other patient needs? Sort of "same amount of people will get it, but over 10 months instead of 10 weeks".

    The panic has begun here
Shops nearly empty of food, hand sanitiser being bought by the trolley load. Seen a pharmacy earlier selling a pack of face masks for 120 quid.

Was speaking to my old boss today and a mate of his who's a bit of a Del Boy got in early on the face masks, ordering shipments of the fuckers and has made a small fortune.

I think so. You halt the spread so the 15% that develop serious symptoms aren't in larger numbers at once rushing to hospital. They key will be seeing at what point China decides they're ready to go back to work.

One of the under-the-radar lolfests in this is Indonesia's aggressive, frustrated insistence that they don't have a single case and aren't going to get one due to their superior Indonesia-ness, even though it's very clear that they have a shit ton of it.
